Deacon’s Boys’ Day with Dylan had been pretty great. They’d gone fishing with Tyler and then had lunch in town, followed by watching a baseball game and taking a long nap on the couch. It was everything he loved made even better by the presence of his son. While he loved Dylan and Delaney equally, he connected with his son better than he did his daughter. Having a girl was just hard. Thankfully, he had his sisters and his cousins to help. Today, Morgan had taken Laney into Savannah for a little shopping trip. His daughter hadn’t stopped talking about it for two weeks now, and he was grateful beyond words to Morgan for giving her something to look forward to.
Around dinnertime, he’d fired up the grill. Dylan helped him get the burgers ready, enjoying the time in the kitchen like usual. Both his kids were very hands-on in things. Deacon never wanted them to miss out on something, so he let them try anything once. Whatever they liked stuck. He was just heading back inside with the cooked patties on a fresh plate when Delaney came running through the front door, wrapping her dad in a big hug. “Daddy! I’m going to lay out my new clothes on my bed so they don’t wrinkle.” She was off again in a flash, making Deac shake his head. They just kept getting faster and more energetic with each new day. Looking up at Morgan in the doorway, he set the burger plate down and headed to pull her into a hug. “I owe ya one, cuz,” he said, nudging her with his elbow.
