Book: More Happy Than Not

Summary: Life hasn’t been easy for Aaron but with his girlfriend Genevieve by his side, he’s slowly starting to discover happiness again. But then he meets Thomas and his life only gets more complicated. In a world where you can have your memories erased by Leteo, wouldn’t it be easier to simply forget all his struggles?
This book was beautiful and heartbreaking. It dealt with such a wide range of important and heavy issues in very gentle empathetic way. I do have to say that the blurb of this book does miss out a very important part of its concept (the Leteo project) but at least this gave way to more surprises in the plot, which is the great thing about this book - it’s full of clever gut-wrenching twists and leaves you thinking ‘wow.’ All the characters were not only three dimensional and complex but all added a new perspective or plot to the story. Moreover? structure of this book was excellent and it left me with MANY thoughts and feelings.
Although I loved this book you may have noticed that it only has four stars. I think part of the reason for this may have been due to my incredibly high standards; all of Adam other books have left me weeping for long after, wanting the best for my newly adopted fictional children. The problem is, I wasn’t a big fan of any of the characters (bar Genevieve). I don’t want to say the main character was a dick because he went through so much, but there was probably nicer ways he could’ve done what he did. So, although I pitied him and felt sorry for him, his story didn’t leave me in inconsolable tears because I was also angry at him. Of course I will applaud Silvera’s creation of such a complicated character but they just weren’t to my taste.
Overall, I would definitely recommend this book. Although it was missing Silvera’s magic touch that seems to have developed over time, the idea was genius. It expertly explores homophobia, the power of our memories, depression, and what it means to be happy, in a very clever and emotional way - so even if you have no connection to these topics I would definitely pick it up.
