Oh good, I’m glad it was helpful. I do know what you mean about the whole “experts struggle to explain what to do in a way I can do it” thing. Ever a problem of any field.
If you don’t mind my asking, what Fire Emblem games were you looking to play?

Meg likes Thanatos. What's not to like? He's polite and hard working and never causes her any problems.
She's pretty sure he likes her too, but he's been awkward lately. Well, more awkward than usual, and she doesn't understand why when he could so easily solve his own problem.
Just because she and Zagreus are sleeping together again doesn't mean he's off limits. Frankly, Zagreus is easy and he loves Thanatos and if he wanted to tumble Zagreus into his rarely used bed, Meg is sure that all he would have to do is ask.
But he's not in the practice of having to ask for what he wants. Zagreus knows him so well that it's rare he has to use his words, which is really backfiring for him right now.
But all of that aside, he's the only person she can go to with this. She thinks Nyx might be on Zagreus's side and she knows Dusa is fond of him, but they have their reasons to be loyal to the house too. Maybe the rumors are nothing, or maybe they're something, and if they are she doesn't want to risk Zagreus if she doesn't have to.
She tracks down Thanatos just as he's dropping off another set of souls. He pauses when he sees her, giving her a short nod. "Megara. Do you need something?"
Meg doesn't roll her eyes at his stiffness only because giving him a reason to be defensive won't help her here. "Have you heard the rumors about Zagreus?"
He blinks at her.
Uhg. He's such a workaholic. "There's talk of two courts within one house. Of Zagreus wielding a power that's not borrowed."
Thanatos's gaze sharpens. "That's impossible. All that exists in the underworld falls under Hades's purview."
Impossible. Everyone keeps saying that, as if their queen isn't back due to the impossible, as if Zagreus hasn't fought his father and won enough times that she's stopped bothering to keep track.
Thanatos must be thinking along similar lines, because he says, "Zagreus doesn't want to be in charge of anything." He could challenge his father for the throne, and he'd win it, but he hasn't. Thanatos has a point. "He hates the bureaucracy of it all. And besides," he hesitates, then eventually says, "his skill may have improved, but he doesn't have much power himself. It's all thanks to the gods' boons."
"Do you really believe that?" she asks. There are plenty of spirits that are blessed by the gods even in death, yet she doubts Theseus would last even a minute against Hades.
Zagreus had never been especially powerful before, not beyond the gifts all immortals are granted, but - he's different, now.
Thanatos shrugs and her avoids her gaze.
She doesn't press, just sighs and says, "Keep an ear and eye out, yeah? Maybe it's just gossip. But if Zagreus is getting himself into trouble, it's better we find out about before anyone else does."
"I thought you didn't like him," he says then his pale face drains of even more color.
Anyone else she'd snap their neck, but this is Thanatos. "Liking him was never the problem. He's very likable."
"I know," Thanatos says, and that's apparently all the mortification he can stand, because he's gone in the next second.
Meg hopes he can get to the bottom of this, if there's even anything to find.
hello! I'm playing Vesperia for the first time ever and I'm getting ever so slightly OBSESSED. the story is so good! the characterization is so good! YURI AND FLYNN SO OBVIOUSLY HAVE A (WEIRD) THING GOING ON. everything is amazing and I am in love, so I went on AO3 and there's shamefully little fic, of which your characterization was my ABSOLUTE FAVORITE. please (when you feel like it) tell me more about Flynn being absolutely unhinged, and also maybe Yuri (because I can't help adoring Yuri)?
There are a couple skits in-game that also confirm Flynn is unhinged, including one where Rita calls him a "battle maniac" like Yuri and Judy, something he doesn't deny At All. It's repeatedly stated that he loves a good bloody fight and even Yuri comments that, if Flynn was still the same as he was when they were kids, Yuri would never be able to beat him in a fight
There's also a prequel novel that never got translated and while it's not 100% canon it does give us insight into Flynn's childhood and shows us he was errr a very angry kid who only calmned down thanks to Yuri lmao! Multiple times throughout the game Flynn’s reaction to people dying (like Cumore) is....he basically doesn’t care, unlike Yuri who still manages to care Very Much
It’s an interesting parallel between them and I am obssessed with itÂ
a fellow believer in Slytherin Yuuri omg, please tell us all about your YOI Hogwarts headcanons I'll love you forever!!!
I don’t mess with the Hogwarts houses too much but I definitely headcanon Yuuri as a Slytherin, because he’s super competitive and ambitious, and utterly ruthless but only to himself. I see myself that way too; I’m half Ravenclaw and half Slytherin, because when my competitive side comes out, it goes HAM. I always imagined there had to be Slytherins who were more chill. Yuuri’s definitely one of them.
I'm looking to get into tabletop RPGs! But I'm rather bad at both strategy and maths - what I really love are stories and characterization. Of course, it'd be fun for my character to become something of a badass, and action scenes seem like a common and fast way to have that. From your previous posts, I'm really interested in Chuubo's, but since I'm so new I'm worried I'd mess up the characterization. I kind of liked the look of Fate too, but you don't talk a lot about it so I'm not sure. Help?
Yeah, Chuubo’s is great for character-driven play, but if you’re a tabletop roleplaying newbie looking for a book you can use to teach yourself the hobby, I wouldn’t recommend it as a starting point. Though it’s not conventionally rules-heavy (and indeed involves no dice-rolling at all), it has a lot of moving parts. I’m sure you’ve seen my previous posts touching on some of its subsystems, but for the benefit of those just joining us:
It’s a wonderful piece of game design, but definitely the sort of thing you want a more experienced gamer’s help puzzling out.
As for Fate Core, I actually have discussed it a fair bit; you may not have spotted it because I generally bring it up in terms of games by other titles that use the system, like Mindjammer or the licensed Atomic Robo RPG. It’s also a good one for character-driven play, but I’d be inclined to start out even lighter for an introductory game if you’re not joining an established group.
Tell you what: if Fate Core caught your eye, have a look at its little sister, Fate Accelerated Edition. It’s lightweight, short enough that you should be able to shoot through the whole rulebook in one sitting, and best of all, it’s pay-what-you-want, so you can try before you buy.

been reading your meta posts -- you've got some really interesting takes! -- but I keep noticing you're someone who knows Tactics and Strategy. as someone who's been wanting to try competitive Pokemon and to play Fire Emblem, but does best with some lessons, do you have any starter resources I could look up?
Thank you! But also I am not actually that good at tactics. I am okay and generally get the idea but I am not like. Proficient.
For considering competitive Pokemon, my best advice is “don’t.” I can think of very few things more detrimental to enjoyment of the core series than trying to play competitive, it is a horrible nightmare experience enjoyed by lunatics. I have never been in it for long, and universally leave feeling awful about myself and the series as a whole.
If this does not sway you, I’d say you can look into Smogon’s stuff. While I generally do not vibe with them, they know a lot more about tactics than I do, and can probably generate better advice on the matter than my “pick a favorite and build a team around that, then fuck around for a bit and find out.” If that seems like I’m giving unserious advice, it’s because I am. The harder I tried to actually be good at competitive the worse I felt. The distance that comes with anticipating failure buys some time on the clock.
Fire Emblem, however, is a different beast. If you’re looking to get into anything Awakening or later, just play on Casual mode. No one stays dead, there’s always opportunities to grind levels, they function equivalent to any other RPG.
If you’re looking to get into older games where permadeath is mandatory, then great news, I’m not excellent at these games either so I know some tricks. I’ve never beaten a Hard Mode though. Actually that’s a lie, I beat Eirika route in Sacred Stones, the other game where you’re allowed to grind levels (I didn’t that time though). I can’t really recommend anyone in particular, I don’t know anyone who actually talks mechanics and advice for playing broadly.
The big two I have are “start a map by having a character you want to be good as close to level up as possible, and have them act first. If the level is bad, soft reset until you get what you want.” This is tedious and unnecessary for good players, but sometimes Eirika just really needs that point of strength. The other is that many times, a boss will hang out on their throne or wherever, and you will have some units that are low level and need to catch up. Take your tank, exchange blows until the opponent’s ranged weapon breaks, healing with your cleric to get them nice and buffed up, then take pot shots with the ranged units until you’re where you want to be. Again, unnecessary for good players, but I have brain problems so this is what I do.
The real advice with FE is just…decide how you want to play. If you really cannot stand losing characters, then learn to move a bit slow at first and do your calculations before acting. I think over time you get used to certain things and can act on vibes, but early on it’s a lot of figuring out approximate numbers and when something is or isn’t safe. Some people argue for giving stat boosters to characters immediately when they need them, but I do the opposite and hoard them all until I meet The Character, because strategy doesn’t have to be thinking, sometimes it can be giving the ten year old all the performance enhancing drugs and letting them solo the map.
I do think the best teacher is experience and just trying something out. But in the interest of like. Actual advice. A few thoughts:
The pre-promote cav unit is always good. At least at first. They are designed to be a savior, and to set up KOs for your weaker units early on. They are good to have around, and while it is tempting to bench them early because they feel like EXP hogs, they’re worth breaking out for harder maps when you need to.
Learn defensive formations. Squishy ranged units can be in danger when they run to the front lines, and being able to use your sturdy melee units to block enemy melee is important. Getting a line-up in diagonal formation in front of your mage to press forward can be a big help.
Use what you need when you need it. Like many RPG conceits, the idea of saving good material until it’s needed often hurts more than helps, and in a game where your allies die forever if you lose the match, it’s really not worth being stingy.
Promotion is a matter of preference, but you are not required to wait for level 20. I like to get to 20 before promotion, but very few games will have you reach 20, promote, and reach 20 again before the final map. Hard Mode players always seem to promote early. I’m just stubborn and a stat snob.
Always have a Restore Staff. You never know when a map is going to drop a Berserk staff Bishop or some shit and just ruin your life if they hit. In some games, shops don’t carry over, you lose them forever if you miss them, so buy the staff when you see it.
The only stat thing that was legitimately hard for me to understand was games with Constitution. Basically, weapons have a weight stat, and if the weight is higher than your Con, the difference is subtracted from your speed, reducing the odds of doubling and dodging. This is important because some weapons are really heavy and really strong, but units with low Con just suffer too much from it, and it hinders performance.
If there is a desert, it is hiding something from you. Look up a map online.
Some people may tell you dancers are bad in games where they are noncombatants. This is a lie. Dancers are always good.
