Realized there are these neat petraglyph type assets used in the Monster Rancher 1 & 2 DX banners on steam that I haven't really isolated anywhere. I dunno if these existed elsewhere before the digital rereleases, but noticeably they're only original Monster Rancher breeds. I really love when a style sorta squishes itself into a grid frame of some sort. It's that faux-Aztec sorta look like what Monster Hunter does. Shame there were more of them

I know they were only meant to be loose doodles, but i think i'm getting worse at these... anyway here's gali/monol
[1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8]
MONOLITH[ã¢ããªã¹] it's legit just the Monolith from 2001: A Space Odyssey. I love that even the data portrait is a recreation of that shot from the movie.
JURASS-WALL[ãžã¥ã©ã¹ãŠã©ãŒã«] Jurassic Wall
LAND-OBELISK[ã©ã³ããªããªã¹ã¯]
BLUE-SPONGE[ãã«ãŒã¹ãã³ãž]
ROMPER-WALL[ãã³ããŒãŠã©ãŒã«] Like the clothing, Rompers? like a Romper Room?
SOBORO-BENTO[ãœãããã³ã] from soboro[ããŒã] minced meat or fish that is seasoned and fried and bento[åŒåœ] a Japanese styled boxed lunch.
ICE-CANDY[ã¢ã€ã¹ãã£ã³ãã£] Japanese phrase for what we'd call a popsicle or an ice-pop.
STYROFOAM[ã¹ã¿ã€ã«ãã©ãŒã ]
WILD-BLOCK[ã¯ã€ã«ããããã¯]
BAROQUES[ãããã¯ã¹] a play on Baroque, the ornate architectural style, and Blocks. Alternatively could be Italian rather than French and meant to be read as BAROCCOS. Either way the Japanese R/L bit is lost in romanization.
ASUFAARU[ã¢ã¹ãã¡ãŒã«] it does seem awful close to ASPHAULT[ã¢ã¹ãã¡ã«ã] which is what the English localization called it, but there's a clear occult theme here that doesn't line up.
WAKAKUSA-KENZAI[ã¯ã«ã¯ãµã±ã³ã¶ã€] wakakusa[è¥è]: "green grass/fresh grass" and I think kenzai[建æ]: "building material"?
KURO-SHIRO[ã¯ãã·ã] from kuro[é»]: "black" and shiro[çœ]: "white"
AOZORA[ã¢ãªãŸã©] from aozora[é空]: "blue sky"
and of course we come back to RAKUGAKI-MONO[ã©ã¯ã¬ãã¢ã] from rakugaki[èœæžã]: "scribble/graffiti/doodle" and Monolith
HOSHIZORA[ãã·ãŸã©] from hoshizora[æ空]: "starry sky"
DOMINOS[ãããã¹]
FIREWALL[ãã¡ã€ã¢ãŠã©ãŒã«] I know this one's not a specific breed, it's just the errantry boss monster, but I figured it was worth throwing in here.
AKASHIC[ã¢ã«ã·ãã¯] from the Akashic Records of Theosophic religious lore. Supposedly a psychic otherworldly record of all events of the universe past present and future.
MOCHILITH[ã¢ããªã¹] MOCHI MONOLITH
BANRI[ãã³ãª] I have no idea what this is supposed to be
STAINED-WALL[ã¹ãã³ããŠã©ãŒã«] like Stained Glass
TRANCE-WALL[ãã©ã³ã¹ãŠã©ãŒã«]
BLUE-WIND[ãã«ãŒãŠã£ã³ã]
AMA-NO-IWATO[ã¢ããã€ã¯ã] from ama-no-iwato[倩岩æž] the cave the Shinto sun goddess Amaterasu hid herself after being disrespected by her brother, Susanoo.
NAGEKI[ãã²ã] from nageki[åã]: "grief/lamentation" possibly a bizarrely poor taste reference to the wailing wall in Jerusalem, as nageki-no-kabe[åãã®å£] is the Japanese name for it?
CHOCO-WALL[ãã§ã³ãŠã©ãŒã«] Choloclate Wall
CHOCO-PARFAIT[ãã§ã³ããã§] Chocolate Parfait
MAD-WALL[ããããŠã©ãŒã«]
UIROU[ãŠã€ããŠ] from Uirou[å€é] a kind of Japanese sweet rice jelly
CASTELLA[ã«ã¹ãã©] the popular Japanese style of "western style" cake
