Went to a Ska Music night tonight and it was danceable and frenzied and fun!
This Way Orkestra were predominantly instrumental only, though the lead singer had a cool song he wrote for a neighbour's kid who asked for a rap about coin collecting and it was a BOP.
Then Monkey Spanner, the Scottish lads, took over and did a whole bunch of ska classics.
The moshpit was frenzied, it was absolutely WILD to see my mate sing every word of 54-46 Was My Number like he was in a club back in the day and learn he was mad about ska in his teens(!?!???!) demographic, girl in front, coin collector song, death in paradise
We danced around so so much. The demographic was a mix of boomers who would've been young when the 80s/90s wave was big, then people roughly our age, and a smattering of the youth. A whole lot were dressed in suits and suspenders and leaning in hard to the vibe.
I learnt that the Death in Paradise theme song is actually You're Wondering Now by The Specials.
Big ups to this couple (friends?) in front of us who bought the merch, especially the girl who had gloves and a flannie and those black/white chequered shoes - my night was better for seeing how much fun she was having.
