In gran parte del Sud Italia ritroviamo folletti dall’aspetto di un piccolo monaco, chiamati munacelli, monachetti, monaci fajetti, munachelli, monachicchi, ecc. Già nel Pentamerone si cita questa apparizione, che va per le stanze di notte, porta incubi o causa i colpi di fortuna. Nell’Ottocento Matilde Serao trascrive una leggenda che lo identifica nel figlio deforme di una nobildonna non maritata, aggiungendo dettagli macabri e tragici. Inoltre Roberto de Simone rende lui l’aiutante magico della sua "Gatta Cenerentola", che dona (al posto delle fate) alla protagonista dell’opera teatrale un abito per andare al ballo del re.
In den Großteil der südlichen Halbinsel finden wir Wichtel, die wie kleine Mönche aussehen und die monacelli, munachetti, monaci fajetti, monachelli, munachicchi, usw. genannt werden. Schon der Pentameron beschreibt diese Erscheinungen als nachtwandernde Gespenster, die entweder Albträume oder auch Glück bringen. Im Neunzehnten Jahrhundert schreibt Matilde Serao eine Sage auf, in der das Mönchlein ursprünglich der entstellte Sohn einer unverheirateten Adelsfrau ist und gibt dem Kobold eine sowohl tragische und düstere Gestalt. Am Ende macht Roberto de Simone aus ihm den magischen Helfer seiner "Aschenkatze", die von ihm statt von den Feen das Kleid für den Ball des Königs bekommt.
In most parts of southern Italy you can find goblins that look like little monks and that are called munacielli, monachetti, monaci fayetti, munachelli, monachicchi, etc. We can find first mentions of this monklet in the "Tale of Tales", in which this apparition haunts houses during the night, causing nightmares or bringing good fortune to a lucky few. In the Nineteenth Century Matilde Serao wrote down a legend that saw in this spirit the deformed son of an unmarried noble woman, adding both macabre and tragic details. Roberto de Simone on the other hand made him the little helper of his "Cinderella the Cat", who is aided by a goblin (instead of the fairies) in getting to the ball in a pretty dress.
Buttiamoci nella settimana dei folletti con due spiritelli napoletani: o Monacello e la Bella 'Mbriana. Se il Monaciello è un folletto notturno, la Bella 'Mbriana (bella Mariana/meridiana) è uno spirito diurno, se lui è dispettoso e disordinato, lei è gentile ed esige pulizia. I due son spesso contrapposti. Come molte fate della casa, la Bella 'Mbriana si muta in geco o farfalla quando è scovata.
Let's start off Goblinweek with two neapolitan sprites: o Monaciello and la Bella 'Mbriana. While the Monachello is a night spirit, the Bella 'Mbriana (pretty Mariana/sundial) is active in the day-time, while he's mischievious and messy, she's kind and demands cleanliness. The two often appear somewhat as rivals. Like many household fairies, the Pretty 'Mbriana turns into a gecko or butterfly if noticed.

Wie das Mönchlein durch die Nacht wandelt, ist die Bella 'Mbriana (schöne Mariane/Sonnenuhr) Tagaktiv, wie er Streiche und Unruhe liebt, ist sie gutmütig und ordentlich. Die beiden sin oft Gegenspieler. So wie auch viele andere Hausfeen, verwandelt sie sich auch in einer Echse oder einem Schmetterling, wenn sie entdeckt wird.
