Mourning is a very interesting topic for a conference talk. Interested to see where this goes.
I think the hardest thing I've been dealing with the church is the worship. I come from a church where worship was half of the entire service, where it was loud joyful and glorious. You could stand, sit, dance whatever you wanted. The music was full of the spirit, the singer's we're passionate with the love of Christ. We sang with all of our hearts, our hands held up high, you didn't feel uncomfortable for having a crappy voice.
Now we sit and sometimes joyfully sing to the sound of organ. It's miserable.
I can't explain it. But starting off the service this way is just turning me away from the church. Half the time after singing I want to leave or I start crying while we're singing and not because I'm happy... I'm not sure why this is such a challenge for me.
Also went here today. The Portland Temple. Still makes me so happy.

An evangelical calling Mormonism a cult is the pot calling the kettle black...
...but it's not an incorrect statement, however discriminatory it may be.
Every media outlet ever is losing its shit over Robert Jeffress' statement calling Mormonism a cult. And, yeah, he is discriminating against them, and religious intolerance isn't acceptable and all.
However, Mormonism IS a cult. Pretty much all organized religions at their base are, but the LDS church is, like, WOW a cult. I'm an atheist, so of course I think all religion is bullshit, but can you name another religion that requires it's members to pay 10% of their family's income to the establishment? Mormons and non-Mormons alike are not even allowed in the temples unless they have recommendations from church leaders to confirm that they are in good standing with the LDS church, and members of the church can face excommunication if they publicly discuss problematic or provocative elements of Mormonism. That sounds pretty fucking cult-like to me. Or, how about the Fourteen Fundamentals propagated by LDS leaders? Read through that and try to tell me that doesn't sound like a cult.
I think a lot of this "ZOMG someone is discriminating against Mormons" has to do with the fact that most non-Mormons in this country don't have to deal with the LDS establishment directly. But if you're a non-Mormon who is living or has lived in Arizona or Utah you've had a more direct and in-depth experience. You have had to deal with their relatively absolute control of local government; you likely have friends/family who have left or are still with the Mormon church, or heard recounted experiences of the creepy practices of LDS from ex-Mormon after ex-Mormon after ex-Mormon...
I'm not going to try and make the argument that the LDS church is worse than evangelism or Catholicism or Islam; they're all fucked up, rife with sexism, racism, corruption, and cultures that breed ignorance and obedience without question - but this recent media portrayal of Mormons (as well as Mormons' portrayal of themselves) as misunderstood and persecuted people is just as insanely ridiculous as viewing white males as an oppressed class.
