all this time spent together has really opened my eyes.
ian heard him, but the words didn’t feel like the mickey he knew from before— before he went to hell without so much as a return address. the words cut through him like the chilly spring air that was circulating throughout chicago & the surrounding areas. it made his heart hammer against his chest while his breathing grew stiff. he avoided looking at mickey, & instead, he focused his gaze on the houses across the street. he often wondered about the people who lived in those homes & what their lives looked like in comparison with his own. at one point in his life, he might have been jealous of them.
now it didn’t matter. none of it mattered.
his head was trapped in the fog that came with being heavily medicated to going completely cold turkey. it made his body ache, but he didn’t draw too much attention to that fact. shaking his head, he stole a glance in mickey’s direction ( he could’ve sworn his heart skipped a beat ) & laughed softly at himself. he could only stall for so long; the truth needed to come out eventually.
“ you don’t owe me anything, ” ian said, breaking the silence between them. he swallowed as he felt a lump form in the back of his throat. what more could he say to him?
listening to the sounds of his breathing, ian shakily stood up from his spot on the steps, & then turned to walk back into the gallagher house. he stopped himself before stepping onto the next step up. hands went into his pockets to keep himself from reaching out. “ don’t you see, mick? i don’t like who i am when i’m on my meds. shit, i don’t even really know who i am when i’m on them, but you’re gonna make me take them. ” irritation filled in his tone; there was no swallowing back the feeling.
as much as he hated to admit it, monica had been right about one thing. mickey wouldn’t be able to accept or understand him unless he was medicated. it was all some sort of sick joke.
