Spending my time designing custom races for my future D&D campaign, here’s a look at my appearance notes on the Mokai, a carnivorous desert-based race. They’re nomadic scavengers who can safely digest the most putrid of meats, and can easily locate dead/undead through observing and tracking other carrion-eating species.
Not all are nomadic though, some have broken away from traveling groups to form extravagant stone-carved cities within mesas and canyons. These cities eventually became common meeting places for nomadic groups (after a lot of gruesome famines within the cities because the Mokai rely on scavenging/some hunting for their food, and have never taken up agriculture), and now serve as places of exchange for goods, services, and knowledge.
I have yet to flesh out their culture much, but one interesting thing that they do as a part of their funeral rites is eat their own dead. This comes from multiple cases of hardship in their past when food was stretched extremely thin and so they’ve become a highly resourceful race in many aspects of their lives.
