Your technically a 1.5 ;) I don't know if i'm MODY either, they think that or slow-onset t1. I went 3 yrs without insulin, just diet. Now i'm on insulin with meals and i'm really sensitive to it as MODYs are. MODY3 is progressive so if that's what you have eventually you will become insulin-dependent. Basically the only testing for MODY is very expensive genetic testing, so hence why they are uncertain! Google diabetes genes there is a really good website explaining the MODYs :)
I've been through a slew of diabetes doctors since being diagnosed. When they first suspected I had diabetes, there was no evidence; I didn't present any of the symptoms, nor was I obese. My pediatrician luckily caught that I was spilling sugar in my urine. My first diabetes doctor went as far as to say, "huh, that's weird," in response to my lack of symptoms. My second went as far as to suggest MODY and then proceeded to have my mother and I tested.
The tests came back positive and my insane doctor put in on a medication that was meant to preserve the functionality of my pancreas. Unfortunately, a side effect of that medication was insane lows. I gained a ton of weight trying to chase my blood sugars. It was not a pleasant experience.
Since then, docters 3, 4, and 5 have all kept me on metformin and now janumet (a combination of januvia and metformin). For seven years I controlled my diabetes with diet and oral medication. Just recently, I've had to add an extreme exercise schedule to my treatment plan.
I know that as soon as I want to have children, I'm going to have to go on insulin. I just hoping that I can hold off with my current plan until then.
Now I've told you my life story! haha Sorry if that was a little boring.
