I was thinking about the context of a Modern Athos and Milady last night.
No matter what - they wouldn't pine for one another. They would never actively seek one another out - their story isn't some Romantic Comedy, this isn't a chick flick that after heartbreak neither can live without the other so they go through life fighting to be with the other. No, that isn't how it works.
They don't pine for one another - but they don't get over one another either. Athos doesn't move on, he can never move on. Anne however, creates the illusion of such. She'll date, she'll marry but they aren't for love but for wealth and privilege.
Still, their magnetism is what draws them together. Over time, they'll run into one another again and again and the allure will always be there. They'll be at an event together - separate - and they'll see one another. Anne will pass by and Athos will smell her perfume, hear her laugh. Every shade of blue will pale in comparison to Athos's eyes to Anne. Their magnetism will be too much for either of them to bare and they'll end up hooking up in a broom closet or empty room. They'll get their fill of one another.
This hook-up, each time, will break Athos over and over again. He may not have moved on but he's tried to heal. He's tried to live in a world without the woman he loves but she's a sweet poison that he'll gladly take. Everything he had worked so hard to achieve, every milestone he's made to recovery from Anne will be shattered and he'll be back to square one.
Anne, however, will get what she wants - pleasure and the knowledge that Athos still is and always will be under her spell. She'll button her blouse, fix her hair and make sure her make-up isn't smudged and leave him in his own self pity and regret. However, Anne is and always will be an actress because that night after all is said and done and she's home with her new husband. She'll stay up, standing in the darkness of an empty room with a glass of wine in her hand, staring out into the city below and wonder - could it have ever ended any differently.
