Medal Moments: Jibanyan ("100 Punches” reprint with Yo-motion Medal)

Paws of Fury! This Jibanyan Medal Moments figure is the same as the “100 Punches” version from the previous wave. The previous version of this Jibanyan came with a “Jibanyan eating Chocobars” gray medal, whereas this version comes with an “original medal art” (as I call it) Yo-motion Medal that can be found in Series 1 of the Yo-motion Medals.

Some sites just call this “Jibanyan,” some call it “Jibanyan 100 Punches.” Watch out for that if you check eBay or Amazon.

I’m not sure why this Yo-kai in particular has a figure, since he isn’t really that popular in Japan or America (as far as I know from Japanese merchandise,) but here he is. He comes with his Yo-motion Medal, which can also be found in blind bags.

Wibble Wobble stacking plushes!

Wibble Wobble, one of the Yo-kai Watch mobile games, has its own toys! These are meant to look like Yo-kai WibWobs (Yo-kai faces that you use in the game,) and can be stacked together (like connecting the WibWobs in the game.)

This is Hasbro's Yo-kai Watch. This toy is in English. Some people might call this the "original" watch because it was the first one to appear in the series. As you can see, it's white and has a plastic bubble over the face. To put the medal inside, you press a small button on the right side which makes the bubble pop up, leaving the medal slot open. After you push a medal inside, voices and music will begin to play.

This watch will only play the gray-colored medals and golden-colored medals. Any other colored medals will not work in this watch. It will not use the Yo-motion medals, which have 3 black holes on the upper-right side.

You don't need to worry about inserting the medal incorrectly, as Hasbro's version of the Yo-kai Watch prevents that. There is also an arrow on the top of the medal that directs you.

After a Yo-kai medal has finished making sounds, you can press the button on the right side of the watch to make the Yo-kai repeat its name. If you hold in the button, a new sound will begin to play. This is the sound that plays whenever Nate, the boy in the television show, searches for a Yo-kai. With this sound, you can pretend to search for Yo-kai yourself. Unlike the version in the show, though, this watch does not have a light that shines with the sound.

This watch does not have an on/off switch, but I have had mine since it was first released and have never had to change the battery. When you insert a medal, the voices and music are very loud, and there is no way to lower the volume or silence it.

This watch normally ranges for around $20.00. Since there is a newer version of the watch in stores, it would not be strange to find this at a cheaper price, especially at stores that want to get rid of older products. The watch comes with two Yo-kai Medals: The red cat Jibanyan ("Winking") and the ghost Whisper. These two medals are exclusive to this toy, which means that buying this toy is the only way you can get them. They are not available in the medal blind bags.

I will discuss medals later on in this guide but feel free to scroll down to the "Yo-kai Medals" section if you're interested in those first.

This is Hasbro's Yo-kai Watch Model Zero. Like the other watch, this toy is also in English. Unlike the first watch, this one does not have a bubble over the face so the medal slot is always open.

This watch will play the original watch's gray medals and gold medals and Yo-motion (green, gold and red with three holes on the upper right) medals. The gray medals work differently from the colored ones.

To play a medal, you need to use the crank around the face of the watch. First, you need to turn the crank to the bottom, to the number zero. You insert the medal, and a sound will play. After that sound, you turn the crank over to the number one, and music will play. After that is finished, you turn the crank over to the number two, and the Yo-kai summon will finish and the Yo-kai will say its name.

If you flick the red switch on the right side, the Yo-kai's name will repeat. If you have a Yo-motion medal inside, you can hold in the red switch on the right side of the watch and a light will project out of the watch. A short animation will play in this light until you release the switch.

The original gray and gold medals work differently than the Yo-motion medals. You play the medal the same way, turning the crank. However, unlike the new colored medals, the gray medal does not say the Yo-kai's name and does not play an animation. With gray medals, the Model Zero watch only plays music.

If you do not have a medal in the watch, you can hold in the red switch and the "searching for Yo-kai" sound will play. Unlike the original watch, this watch uses the projector light while the noise plays.

This watch also ranges for $20 new in stores.

These are Yo-kai Medals. They come in multiple colors.

The gray medals do not have a name, but they're usually called "original medals" or just "gray medals." They come in Hasbro's blind bags and have 4 different series. To tell them apart, the bags they come in have different colors and list their series number on the front. 3 Medals come in a bag. There are "Legendary" Yo-kai Medals that are colored gold, but they are rare and will only be in one bag in a full box of 24 bags.

The "Yo-motion Medals," also known as "Z medals," are compatible with the Model Zero Watch. These Medals only come in 2 per bag and have 3 projector holes on the top-right of the medal's art. They come in green, red, and yellow colors. The yellow-colored medal is for the Legendary Yo-kai and is only in one bag out of a full box.

The Medals that are compatible with Hasbro watches are different from the Japanese medals. The back of the medals are different: the Hasbro medals have the bumps on the right side which let the watch know which medal is inside. The Japanese medals have the bumps down the middle. These medals will not fit in each others' watches.

The Japanese medals have Japanese writing on the bottom-left over a colored banner. The Hasbro medals do not have writing on the banner and the banner is just one solid color.

There are also exclusive medals that only come with certain toys and games. These medals work the same as others but have a special picture on them that you can only get from buying that item.

For example, a picture of Jibanyan eating candy bars on a medal is only included with a certain toy figure, and you can not get it inside of a blind bag. The medal makes the same noise as the Jibanyan medal included with the watch and has a different picture just for collectors or for the fun of having more medals.

There are other gray medals like Casanuva, Enefly, Chippa, and Flengu that were only available in other countries. Your best bet is eBay, but they will likely be very expensive.

Nate was shown wearing the Yo-kai Watch U in a display picture at the booth, and USApyon was next to him. I personally don’t think this confirms anything besides the possibility of a Yo-kai Watch U toy in America and USApyon being introduced to the series (as “Usapyon,” sans the capital letters) but the popular theory is showing the Yo-kai Watch U confirms Yo-kai Watch 3 and Yo-kai Watch Busters (AKA Blasters) among the Reddit fanbase.

If I was a more optimistic person, I would say that the U Watch does indeed confirm future titles in the series, as Hasbro likely wouldn’t have permission to show elements of the series’s future events without putting them to use/making a product to sell--but after seeing Japanese titles canceled at the drop of a hat without notice (Zatch Bell’s manga series released by Viz, for example,) I’ll be happier when we get an official press release about it.
