hakoda was the first person bato came out to in terms of both gender and sexuality, he came out as gay a few months into being at sea at war, and came out as nonbinary a couple months after zuko's coronation. Both times, Hakoda was overwhelmingly supportive, and found the label of Bisexual thanks to bato's coming out (with some help from sokka and katara)

I think in between the time Hakoda left for war and the time we see him he lost a lot of weight from what we can see, probably bc he didn’t always think eating was such a priority with all the stuff he was responsible for. So batos always shoving food on him and making sure he’s taking care of himself 🥺

ok i think that bato's arm would have been weakened by his injury, enough that he probably couldn't do the same kind of work on the ship as he had before. and like ... bato feeling like he has to force himself to "pull his weight" and bounce back and do exactly the same work, but hakoda notices that he's in pain, and just wordlessly adjusts his workload, assigns him tasks that don't require heavy lifting, etc. just. that he knows bato well enough to know not to make a big deal out of it 🥺

i like the idea of hakoda, chit sang, haru etc going and breaking out the prisoners from the invasion... like a bakoda reunion PLUS the kyoshi warriors and theyre all on the run, i guess they would have to split up bc that's so many people. but also like the potential of bato and the duke and haru... i think that would be fun to write or read!
