these are mock strawberries. In Chinese they are called "snake berry". They look like strawberry, but the berries are actually somewhat tasteless. I think they are cute even tho it's consider a "weed".

After years of assuming these were just a wild strawberry or something deathly poisonous growing in my backyard, I just found out they are a mock strawberry. When is a "strawberry" not really a strawberry? When it is the tasteless but harmless fruit of Potentilla indica, mock strawberry (also known as Indian strawberry, false strawberry). The leaves are often very strawberry-like and the plant spreads by stolons like strawberry plants. This leads to confusion even when nobody sees the red fruits. It's a weed here, but not our ugliest. It covers the ground in half shady spots and can survive and even thrive inder the blades of a lawnmower, so it could be used as an alternative groundcover. And is the Latin epithet "indica" correct? Probably not. It seems to be from eastern and southern Asia, but if you check twenty websites, you'll find twenty different countries of origin, from Russia to Pakistan to the USA. Mock strawberry (Duchesnea indica). This strawberry lookalike evolved its appearance independently of the true strawberry family, to which it is not closely related. Native to Asia it is considered invasive in many countries it has spread to through ornamental planting. The fruit is remarkably tasteless with the faintest hint of watermelon. In the folk medicine of its native range, the crushed leaves are used to treat skin problems.
