Such a random thing but I'm thinking about the dam scene from Mockingjay pt. 1 and. Like. Look everyone gives props to the vanguard of that charge. The first to hold the bombs, the first to run into a hail of gunfire, and, in the end, if any manage to survive all that, the first to get swept away by a massive wall of water when their plan succeeds.
And then you've got your middle-guard. They know they'll probably have to grab that bomb. They know the odds of the vanguard punching through is low, they NEED to be there to finish the job. They'll get swept away too, but they know it'll be after they complete their mission. And that's worth it. It's enough.
But the rear guard man. Like. Think about it. You're in the back, last in line, you know you have the numbers to overwhelm the peacekeepers even if you weren't there. The odds of you having to grab that bomb and finish the job are so low. And sure you're all the way in the back. But you know it's still too close. When that dam breaks, you're getting swept away. And you didn't even do anything besides show up.
But they showed up.
Like can you imagine knowing, KNOWING, that this attack will kill you. And knowing that there is no blaze of glory for you, you aren't the hero of this story. You're just there.
But they still showed up.
Because what if? What if there were more guards than expected? What if there were more guns? Better shots? What if too many other people walked away, saying "I won't make a difference, I'll die without even making it to the dam, and then I'll die for nothing"?
They showed up because they knew they couldn't risk what the outcome would be if they weren't there when their people needed them.
Idk man. That's just so badass to me. Even when you don't think - even when you KNOW- that you won't be the one to save the world, sometimes you just need to show up.
Whenever I hear Watermelon Sugar I think of Mockingjay Pt. 1 because I was watching it for the first time on a road trip and during the bombing scene in D8 my mom turned the radio up LOUD blasting Watermelon Sugar. And there was no sound except for the explosions so it actually sounded like the music was part of the movie.

Rereading The Hunger Games rn and I can't get over how poorly done the first movies were when it came to Peeta.
We had a male lead who was gentle, emotional, kind, funny, and soft. The movies took these "feminine" traits and water them down to being a weakness instead of someone who has been through hell and back and tried to never let the Captial change him.
