"Lan Zhan! Wait up!”
Up ahead, Lan Wangji keeps walking, although Wei Wuxian could swear he picks up his pace even more than before. He rolls his eyes fondly and picks up his own pace until he’s jogging; luckily, Lan Wangji is too well-bred to do anything as embarrassing as run away from a confrontation, so Wei Wuxian is able to close the distance rather quickly.
He catches Lan Wangji’s wrist.
“Lan Zhan!” he says, stopping him in his tracks. “Why are you ignoring me? Don’t tell me you didn’t hear me calling you!”
Lan Wangji stubbornly refuses to turn around, so Wei Wuxian darts around to stand in front of him. His ears are still bright red. His jaw is so tightly clenched the muscles are twitching under the strain. Wei Wuxian gives his wrist a little tug and juts out his lower lip slightly, peering up at him through his lashes.
“Lan Zhan,” he says again, dragging out his name with a whine. “Don’t be mad.”
Lan Wangji closes his eyes and exhales heavily through his nose.
“I’m not,” he says finally.
“You’re lying!” Wei Wuxian gives Lan Wangji’s wrist a little shake, indignant. “You’re definitely mad. I thought you weren’t allowed to lie.”
If it were anyone else standing before him right now, Wei Wuxian would say they were rolling their eyes. But Lan Wangji doesn’t roll his eyes like a commoner, so he only fixes Wei Wuxian with a flat stare.
“You kissed me,” Wei Wuxian says, and then frowns. “Are you mad that you kissed me?”
Lan Wangji’s eyes widen.
“No,” he says quickly. “No, that’s not why—”
“So you wanted to kiss me?” Wei Wuxian asks instead, a hopeful lilt to his voice. “You’re not mad because you regret kissing me?”
He blinks big, round eyes at Lan Wangji and tugs on his sleeve again. He steps in closer; Lan Wangji’s hand twitches in his grasp when it brushes against Wei Wuxian’s hip. Wei Wuxian ducks his head to hide his face until he can get his grin under control and replace it with a longer pout. Lan Wangji sighs.
“I...regret losing control,” he says. “It was highly improper of me to impose myself on you without your consent.”
Oh. Wei Wuxian’s heart does a little flip and his cheeks grow warm. He wants to bury his face in his hands and laugh. Or cry. He’s not sure which just yet.
Instead, he slides his hand down to lace his fingers with Lan Wangji’s and smiles when he hears his breathing hitch at the skin-on-skin contact.
“What if...” he begins slowly, tilting his head to one side, “what if I want you to?”
Lan Wangji pauses, confused. “What?”
Wei Wuxian throws caution to the wind and steps in even closer, brushing his nose against Lan Wangji’s gently.
“I want you to,” he says again. “Impose yourself on me. You caught me by surprise and left before I could make my feelings clear. Which is terribly rude of you, Lan Wangji. I thought you were a gentleman.”
And then, before Lan Wangji can react, he throws his arms around his neck and presses their lips together. It’s quick, chaste and over much too quickly, but Wei Wuxian pulls away with a satisfied smile.
“There. Now we’re even.” His smile drops a little when he sees Lan Wangji frown. “Lan Zhan? Hey, what’s wrong? Should I not have—”
The rest of his words are cut off by a very enthusiastic pair of lips against his. He laughs into the kiss and lets Lan Wangji pick him up by the back of the thighs and push him up against the nearest tree.
“Mark your words,” Lan Wangji tells him, the words hot against his ear.
