summary: celeste has nightmares that only beckett seems to be able to stop.
nightmares
a low, thunderous cackle echoed despite the biting air and dark sky. celeste opened her eyes, chest tightening at the feel of metal digging into her wrists and ankles. an anguished cry broke through the air – it wasn’t hers – and panic started squeezing around her throat.
“celeste, help!”
“hang on. you’re gonna be okay. keep breathing,” she yelled desperately across the rooftop towards where atlas was strapped down.
compared to the metal cuffs around her wrists – which mainly restricted her freedom – thick leather straps criss-crossed across atlas’ body, rendering any moment nearly impossible.
even atlas’ head was strapped down and celeste just knew that atlas was terrified, despite not being close enough to tell.
“you stupid child. you can’t even help yourself,” raife cackled, his eyes growing deranged as his smile grew. “but don’t worry, you’ll join your sister soon enough.”
no!
the scream ripped from her throat – or maybe it was atlas’ – as a blinding light shot out of raife’s machine.
“no!”
celeste screamed and sat up, holding her head and panting. her comforter fell to her lap, the soft fabric gently reminding her that she was in her own bed, far away from raife and his machine.
not far enough away for the nightmares.
“hey, you’re safe. look at me.”
she looked up into the warm eyes of her boyfriend and immediately let out a sigh of relief. the warmth radiating from beckett seemed to coax the breath back into her lungs.
“come here,” he said softly, putting his book to the side and holding his arms out to her.
she shifted so she could get as close as possible, letting beckett wrap her fully in his embrace and pull her close. she closed her eyes and sighed.
“you give the warmest hugs,” she murmured, the sound of sleep still in her voice despite the tension in her body. “thank you.”
beckett pulled back and carefully swept her hair – damp with sweat and sticking to her forehead – behind her ear before settling his hand on her cheek.
“i’ll always be there for you. don’t you know that?”
the worry lines in his forehead relaxed as she nodded, the corner of her lips turning up into a smile as he lowered his head to kiss her – soft and gentle, but still full of love.
“will you hold me?” she asked quietly.
he moved beside her, shifting so his back was to the wall. “of course.”
she hummed gratefully as one arm slid under her pillow and the other wrapped around her waist, pulling her back flush against his chest. his heartbeat was steady and soothing, and it didn’t take long for celeste to fall back asleep.
she intertwined her fingers with his over her stomach as a peaceful sleep took her, beckett’s proximity seeming to be the one thing that kept her dreams nightmare-free.
