Inspiring Others To Greatness
Good leadership abilities are noticeable and rarely seen.
Have you ever been apart of a team you experienced incredible leadership? When everything seemed to become chaotic, someone stands up and begins to give direction and make peace out of the situation? Till this day, you can still recall how they took the initiative and became an influence.
It isn’t just being able to tell people what to do. Yes, that is apart of the process. However being a good leader is more about understanding the needed passion it takes to inspire others. If you just want to give orders, then expect a drop in followers over time. People want to follow those that understand and appreciate them. There is an awesome saying that says,
The first responsibility of a leader is to define reality. The last is to say thank you. In between, the leader is a servant. —Max DePree
True leadership is about a willingness to serve before you are ever recognized. During MessageMakers, there was a tedious task of setting up the main auditorium for connect groups. This task seems minute, but it was so difficult for so many different reasons. The defining moments of change happened when our leadership would stop their things to do list and would appreciate us by assisting in the little things. It changed the morale of the group and the course of the day. I was so blessed by those moments of engagements in a meaningful way. Leadership looks at those who make it happen, the ones who do the grunt work, the ones who don’t get paid, and they point to the one who it is all about.
The greatest examples of leadership can be found throughout the many pages of the Bible. Joseph, who was second in command under Pharaoh of Egypt, was trained to be a leader. Joseph experienced difficulties in life by being sold into slavery, working in prison, and resisting temptations that would ultimately prepare him to become a great ruler. The Bible tells us in
Galatians 6:9 “So let’s not get tired of doing what is good. At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don’t give up.”
God has a way of preparing us in the most creative ways. When we are true leaders devoted to the Only one that matters, then leading becomes something we do in public and in private. Leadership isn’t about tasks or even getting things done. It’s about being an influence and inspiring others to greatness. No, leadership isn’t always easy. Just ask any CEO, any pastor, or any connect group leader. God has graced us with the ability to hear his voice and lead with vision. Inspire others to greatness, serve first, and remember the call to lead is not yours.
