Tips for Fanfic Writers About Paris/France (part II)
NOW WITH ACTUAL BACK UP BECAUSE I WENT TO PARIS LAST WEEK
Remember when I talked about suitable snacks/foods in France? I TOTALLY FORGOT ABOUT CRÊPES MAN. Crêpes are really flat sweet pancakes, usually filled with sugar, nutella or fruit, and you can find them EVERYWHERE in Paris. They’re usually sold on the go and they are heavenly.
Also something you find a lot in Paris and great for background characters/akuma victims/whatever: street vendors. They are everywhere, usually selling hats, water bottles, tiny eiffel towers or scarves and in Montmartre I even had some offering six packs of Heineken beer. They are usually of sub-Saharan descent and what they’re doing is not entirely legal, so sometimes you can see them packing up all their ware within two seconds and fleeing the scene, if they get word of authorities being nearby. They’re still everywhere though, so I think their business is mostly tolerated?
There was an actual opera singer performing in the subway. Underneath one of the main opera houses in Paris. Wild.
It’s lovely how the show uses the ‘lock bridge’, but the locks are actually being removed because they keep falling in the water and their weight makes the bridge unstable. the newly renovated sides of the bridge make it impossible to hang locks.
The styles most apparent in Paris are neo-classical and art nouveau/jugenstil. (A lot of subway signs are art nouveau and seriously beautiful)
Big supermarket brands, if you wanna use that sort of thing: Carrefour and Auchun.
A lot of the public parks in Paris have benches as well as green metal chairs that everyone can use. A lot of people put them in front of the benches and sit on the chairs with their feet propped up on a bench. A lot of people drag them to the edge of fountains to sunbathe there.
If you have scenes take place in restaurants, consider letting your characters eat outside. A lot of restaurants have seating outside directly on the street, and during the summer this is definitely preferable (people watching is a great pasttime)
Versailles is a village all of its own half an hour outside Paris. The palace can still be a great setting, but it’s not exactly in Paris (not to mention that most of the show takes place in the uttermost center of town, never straying far from the Seine)
if you wanna find a middle ground between American and French culture and still let them go to a mall, there’s a huge one called le Quatre Temps in la Défense, the business district of Paris.
great modern-looking villain lairs: le grande arche and tour montparnasse, a giant modern victory arch with a view of Paris and especially the arc de triomphe, and one of the biggest sky scrapers in all of Paris.
the ‘student neighbourhood’ is called Le Quartier Latin and is located across the Seine from the Notre Dame (actually kind of where Marinette’s house is supposed to be?)
You’ll find a lot of book stalls with vintage cards, books and prints along the banks of the Seine.
Maybe a fun thing to know: the former house of Victor Hugo is located near the park that became the inspiration for the park in the show, Place des Vosges.
The province Paris is in is called Île-de-France, and its public transport is divided into 5 zones, Paris being 1.
some settings to consider: centre Pompidou, place de la Bastille, sacré coeur, tuileries, la défense, hotel des Invalides, gardens of Luxembourg.
