I have started answering this question multiple times, but each time it ended up extremely depressing because many of my characters have very complicated relationships with their parents. Here are my revised, No Bummers Fewer Bummers answers!
Andre is not a natural communicator -- he's stubborn and has a tendency toward brusqueness, but a huge part of his job is mingling and making small talk. His very introverted mother taught him to keep conversations moving by turning every answer into another question.
Elise grew up in relative poverty. Her mother worked hard and received government aid, but it was never quite enough to make ends meet. They were dependent on financial support from Elise's volatile, easily-provoked dad -- angering him could mean the difference between covering all of their expenses and having to chose between groceries and utilities. Elise's mom is/was really good at managing difficult personalities and convincing people to compromise. Elise has the same gift for calming tempers and talking people around.
Theo's parents taught her to set boundaries, cut out shitty people, and focus on the relationships that matter. Her Mom's side of the family are a pack of assholes who dropped her and her Dad when her Mom died, but her Dad's side of the family are super chill and kind. It hurt to get frozen out by that side of the family, but the entire ordeal taught her what (and who) is really important.
