Today July 1st is Canada Day or as I refer to it as Colonial Settlers Day, 151 years ago the European white settlers formed a legal confederation which made the theft of First Nations, Metis and Inuit lands legal under their government. Canada has a very troubling history and sadly continuing treatment of Indigenous peoples; from residential schools, the 60's scoop, to the many missing and murdered indigenous women, and mass environmental and political injustices. There is alot of work on reconciliation and alot more awareness is needed, but indigenous people are beautiful and strong Canadian land has been a site of human activity for over 15,000 years. Canada is population is about 5% Indigenous, has over 13 aboriginal language groups. Toronto, where I live, is in the territory of the Huron-Wendat and Petun First Nations, the Seneca, and most recently, the Mississaugas of the Credit River. The territory was the subject of the Dish With One Spoon Wampum Belt Covenant, an agreement between the Iroquois Confederacy and the Ojibwe and allied nations to peaceably share and care for the resources around the Great Lakes. The vast diversity of food, culture, language amongst the various indigenous peoples of Canada is amazing, and I'm proud to be part First Nations in my background. I will always celebrate my Canadian-ness as an aware mixed indigenous person instead of the popular colonial-white-washing nationalism-filled hyped up celebration that alot of Canada Day celebrations have become for many . . #canadaday #colonial #whitesettlers #indigenous #europeansettlers #firstnations #problematic #mixedindigenous #celebrate #canadianfirstnations #settlercolonialism #canada (at Toronto, Ontario)
