East End Georgia Here's a westbound fast freight on the Baltimore & Ohio on southern Indiana. This line was originally the Ohio & Mississippi which was built as broad gauge. It is approaching a siding called Georgia, which is west of Mitchell, Indiana, by five or ten miles.

The lead locomotive is a B&O GP35 in Chessie System colors while the following two units are Southern Pacific—perhaps an SP run-through train.

This is one of my favorite pictures made along the line, with code line, silo, and FORD truck all present.

Ex-Monon Leader

Here’s a southbound train on the Louisville & Nashville, former Monon—and the lead unit happens to be an ex-Monon unit as well. L&N number 2707, a GE U23B, was built as Monon number 608. The train has just rumbled over the Baltimore & Ohio in Mitchell, Indiana.

This may be my best shot of an ex-Monon unit, and it’s marred a bit with blur, alas.

Color Position Light

Here’s another shot that I’ve posted before—a southbound Milwaukee Road train is crossing over the B&O at Mitchell, Indiana. The train is exercising its trackage rights on the Louisville & Nashville, former Monon.

I believe these wonderful signals were designed by an engineer on the B&O, and can only be seen on the home road, plus the Alton, which was controlled by the Baltimore & Ohio.

Clattering Southward

This is a southbound train on the Louisville & Nashville, former Monon, in Mitchell, Indiana. The job is in the process of clattering over the Baltimore & Ohio, former Ohio and Mississippi.

The wonderful signal, known as CPL, for color position light, was developed by a B&O engineer; the locomotive is a General Electric U23B built for the road in 1975. L&N had stopped painting the noses of their locos yellow by this stage, alas.

East Fork White River

I climbed up a signal mast for this angle on a westbound train crossing over the East Fork of the White River. The location is east of Mitchell, Indiana, on the Baltimore & Ohio (former Ohio & Mississippi). I do wish the quality level of these shots was higher.

First Class

Here’s a westbound train blasting its way out of Big Tunnel on the Baltimore & Ohio line through southern Indiana.

Being a young photographer, my shutter speed was not set fast enough to freeze the action, but I naturally moved with the subject while squeezing off the frame and so luckily achieved a “pan” effect here to save the day.

I assume number 4100 to be first of the class (EMD GP40-2) that was built for the road in 1972. The location is east of Mitchell, Indiana; the line is the former Ohio & Mississippi and was originally built in the 1850s as broad gauge.

Big Tunnel

I’ve posted this before, but can resist doing so again. A westbound fast freight blasts out of Big Tunnel. This is located on the former Ohio & Mississippi, east of Mitchell, Indiana.

Hooping Up Orders

Here’s an eastbound Southern Pacific run-through train on the Baltimore & Ohio in southern Indiana (former Ohio & Mississippi). The crew is receiving orders from the dispatcher in an old-school way, by being “hooped up” via a loop of string and a “Y” shaped stick. The location is Michell, Indiana (the L&N, former Monon crosses the B&O in the background of these images). The lead locomotive is a General Electric U33C.
