i hate it so much bc it had SO much potential but then it got so caught up in it’s own misogyny and pretentiousness. s3 is embarrassing to watch
yeah okay everyone was gay but they fridged a girl, whose ENTIRE ARC WAS ABOUT SURVIVAL, TWICE. all bc bryan wanted gillian as his big name even tho her character was A MESS. also h*******....were so fucked up and not in a fun way bc the power inbalance...whew. not good!!!

i hate the reviews of us that are like 'this isn't the second get out' like no one claimed it to be?
like i get it on some level because get out was such a game changer and had HUGE cultural impact, and basically catapulted peele into horror icon status, but i think people are expecting him to make Big Statement movies and that’s not what this is?
like there is a lot of IDEAS that are brought up that could be relevant to social commentary, but us is actually more insular? like there’s a nationwide thread, but the story is focused on this one family and, in particular, lupita’s character and her history, her past traumas, her anxieties and fears.
i think with peele, it’s good that he made get out because it gave him the leg up in the industry in order to do things like us, but i think people don’t get what he’s trying to do, which is essentially make a movie with a black family that really could have been ANY family and just make a horror movie.
also i don’t think people like the open-endedness of the story and how ambiguous some aspects are and are expecting something clear and decisive as get out was in terms of what is bad and what is good. i think those people really should have like... watched some of peele’s interviews in horror noire and history of horror because his interests are very much are in line with identifying with the monster, so i REALLY get where this stemmed from, but i feel like if you go in expecting get out, then you’re going to be disappointed.
in general, i don’t like the term elevated horror because i think it tries to further denigrate a pretty reviled genre, but so many people are like THIS WASN’T SCARY and i almost wonder if it’s because it’s asking the audience to empathize with the characters and their situation, and not providing all the answers, as well as not being excessive in the use of violence or scenes of depravity, and people just don’t want to do the mental work and instead just want to see disturbing imagery.
