Am I (f 19) overreacting to my boyfriends (m 19) comments about my boobs?
A few days ago my boyfriend and I were watching a movie that had a non-human male character who is very popular with women. I made a couple jokes about how “hot” tht character was. I thought it was fine because my boyfriend had also been making comments about how attractive one of the female characters in the movie was too. Later in the movie he told me that my comments actually bothered him and made him feel insecure, which honestly surprised me. Like the character isn’t even human, so it didn’t seem comparable to a real person to me. But we talked about it and I apologized bc I didn’t want to make him feel bad. During that conversation he asked if he’d ever said anything that made me feel insecure. It reminded me of a time when he told me he wished he had “taken advantage of” his ex’s big boobs more when they were together. The thing is, my boobs aren’t small (I’m a DD) plus I actually like them. That being said she was a little heavier than me and had much bigger ones. Hearing that he “regretted not using her boobs more” made me feel a little self-conscious. When I brought that up, he responded with something like “well your boobs are going to get bigger as you get older.” And like even though that’s technically possible, I’m 19 and I thought they were basically done growing. More importantly, I like how they are now and I thought he did too. His comment was kind of a slap in the face. I told him that comment hurt my feelings and tried to explain it by saying something like “what if I said the same thing about your dick.” But he told me I was being sensitive and why do I have to take everything so negatively. He told me he literally couldn’t understand how someone could’ve taken his comment in a bad way. He did say he liked my boobs now and that it was obvious because I have great boobs. So now I’m wondering if I’m overreacting or if it’s reasonable that his comments made me feel insecure.
Having feelings isn't a reaction to anything. It's just something internal that you go through. A reaction is how you act to handle it. So, no, feeling your feelings can never be an "overreaction". Talking about it further would not be an overreaction because that's how you resolve things and nothing here has actually been resolved. Breaking up would not be an overreaction because you're allowed to foster the relationships you want. Slapping him would be an overreaction because violence isn't okay.
