As long as you credit me (lunari162) and follow my rules, you're free to use this translation.
Hey, crescent moon up above… Are you also lost at times?
When I hold up my hands, tonight as well, there's a graceful glow
I start to gallop, chasing after
the light that just faintly floats
Cramming in my thoughts
that disappeared without being spoken
Now, I toss my little prayer
into the vast sky
I just want to become like you someday,
a person who can illuminate someone else
Yes… that's my secret
While I count to ten, I'm hugging my knees again
But, even so, my heart is starting to move
The place I aimed for is in the sunshine,
that wavering smile
Out of breath, I climb up
the stairway of ideals
I had thought I would never reach it,
but my fingers touched that twinkle
Just a little bit more—I speed up
I will become stronger
So wait for me, okay?
This one bout of courage will eventually harness the wind
and progress forward, forward,
beyond even the moonlight, until morning arrives…
Now, as I look up at the blue sky,
my little prayer has bloomed
Gently wrapped in a shower of smiles,
we shared this happiness
So… I won't cry anymore
---
A little note: tossing the prayer is almost definitely a reference to the "rice shower" tradition, where people throw rice over newlyweds to wish them prosperity. It pains me that Cygames' official translation is "Cast into the sky, amidst starlight" instead ><

Magia Record - Witch & Doppel encyclopedia (Puella Historia etc.)
This should be the last time I have to split the posts up, right?
…Right?
(Links to other posts:
-Enemy creatures (Arc 1)
-Enemy creatures (Arc 2)
-Doppels (Arc 1 main cast)
-Doppels (Arc 2 cast)
-Doppels (majority of supporting cast)
-Doppels (OG Madoka and spinoffs)
(*Full spoilers for post-Arc 2 content. Warning for buggly-looking things + macabre imagery, as per usual.)
In the post-Arc 2 “Puella Historia” event series, the cast visits various time periods where Iroha and co. have been recording the lives of historical Puella Magi. The following witches and familiars are encountered there, as well as Puella Magi who would've used the following Doppels if they made their way to the present:
ECHO (II~IV)
Minions of the witch of symbols. Their role is to proliferate.
The witch of symbols has many minions, said to grow and change shape in accordance with the life force they steal from humans. This type is known as the Hominid Dweller.
They grow and evolve through many different stages, using only a fraction of the life force that other witches' minions would use. Their goal is simply to proliferate. Those that grow to a certain stage can give birth to their own minions in turn, even without becoming a full-fledged witch.
If you find 1, there's bound to be 30 more where it came from, so you'd better exterminate them before they multiply even further.
ECHO (II)
Minions of the witch of symbols. Their role is to proliferate.
The witch of symbols has many minions, said to grow and change shape in accordance with the life force they steal from humans. This type is known as the Bird Dweller.
They grow and evolve through many different stages, using only a fraction of the life force that other witches' minions would use. Their goal is simply to proliferate. Those that grow to a certain stage can give birth to their own minions in turn, even without becoming a full-fledged witch.
They assume the shape of a bird, and poke around at just about everything while vibrating their brains-- a unique world of development that humanity could hardly hope to reach.
KOMATSU (Master: Tsuyu Mizuna)
The Doppel of divine punishment. Its form is a straw warrior.
While the master of this emotion wishes for a bountiful harvest to provide salvation to her people, her heart also secretly hosts a self-serving desire to restore her family's authority.
As if to express its master's hidden wish, this Doppel uses straw burning with the flame of desire to smoke out its enemies, and uses its rigid limbs to trap and prey upon them.
Even its master's attempts to stop it won't halt its brutal onslaught, as it continues to seek out and hunt the prey it requires to increase its own value.
Once all the straw burns away and the Doppel vanishes, only a ghastly landscape is left behind, but a scant few beautiful wildflowers also seem to remain.
KOGETSU (Master: Chizuru)
The Doppel of avengeance. Its form is a vacant monk.
As she gazed at the hands with which she cut down her beloved friend, the master of this emotion closed her eyes, in order to continue viewing the memories that had become impossible to realize forevermore.
This Doppel is a round jewel of fantasy that sprang forth from her obscured field of view. It is filled with clouds of memory that spill forth from its skin, and sweet, fragrant flowers of joy. Its core is a fruit that none must ever touch; those who approach it are viewed as mortal enemies by the dragon, which devours them and reduces them to filthy ink.
If one were to lock eyes with the being that peers out from within the jewel, the Doppel's hatred would strike through their brain, leaving them vexed by an unstable mind for some time.
10^-1
The witch of symbols. Her nature is revelation.
A witch who simply continues to proliferate herself, as if charged with an inexorable duty.
Because she has no consciousness, her place of origin and age are unknown, and she has never thought about what she wants to do. She simply obeys the hollow behavioural instinct to proliferate, working together with all of her previous offshoots to replicate herself ever further.
But because she has no intent beyond proliferation, she's easily stamped out when discovered, no matter how many of her there are. Thus, prosperity for this witch is still a long ways off.
APEBIS (Master: Ebony)
The Doppel of skepticism. Its form is a vulture.
From the moment that the master of this emotion was born, she has been forced into a life of servitude to the Pharaohs. But upon realizing that other ways of life exist, she was wracked with conflict.
This Doppel continually emits fluctuations in response to that conflict, and creates doubt in the hearts of those around it as it propagates the fluctuations with its wingbeats. These doubts quickly balloon into various opposing poles-- joy and sorrow, hope and resignation, veneration and contempt-- thus calling forth further chaos. As this chaos reaches its breaking point and overflows, it drags everything down with it into transience and uncertainty.
DREKKA MINNI (Master: Olga)
The Doppel of loss. Its form is an empty ship.
The master of this emotion bears a hollow heart due to the loss of her younger sister, who was raised together with her like two joined trees. She wanders aimlessly in search of her missing other half.
Her Doppel thus carries its master on an endless journey, with a destination that both does and does not exist.
Only the master can board the ship. Should any others approach it, the surrounding waves will swiftly swallow their hearts, dooming them to merely follow in the Doppel's wake like ghosts.
BLOT (Master: Gunhild)
The Doppel of estrangement. Its form is a shipwreck.
The master of this emotion is suffering from significant mental imbalance, as the heart of her elder sister-- raised together with her like two joined trees-- has begun to drift away.
In response to the destructive impulses produced from this imbalance, her Doppel will brutally thrash and destroy anything and everything that approaches it.
Whenever it manifests, it ceaselessly rushes across the dark ocean in search of prey, until the deep, murky emotions comprising it are put at ease. However, no peaceful rest awaits it after doing so.
BLOT
The witch of shipwrecks. Her nature is a dream gone astray.
Her field of view extends in all directions, and she spends her time merely attempting to swallow any targets she perceives.
Those who are swallowed are sent to her vast, hollow back, where a seemingly-endless nothingness awaits them.
This witch's actions are driven by a deep, dry thirst, which she attempts to soothe by absorbing the dreams, hopes, and other feelings of "anticipation towards life" from those she devours.
But her hunger never ends no matter how much she absorbs, so she simply continues to aimlessly wander, like a fallen leaf atop the ocean.
10^-3
The witch of symbols. Her nature is revelation.
A more mature form of a witch who simply continues to proliferate herself, as if charged with an inexorable duty.
She has grown rigid wings and become able to dance through the sky, as well as gained the ability to watch over 3 eras. But much like her immature state, her only behavioural instinct is to proliferate herself.
She now unconsciously attempts to eliminate risks, and sometimes behaves as if to warn her other selves of danger, but the immature versions of the witch can't grasp her intent, so there's no point to it at all.
VIMALA UPADANA (Master: Heruka)
The Doppel of zealotry. Its form is a sutra.
The master of this emotion has lost sight of herself during her efforts to save people, and heavily depends on the zealous faith she receives from those around her.
As if to embody its master's obsession, her Doppel races across the land to bestow divine providence on those who seek salvation, thinking itself to be garbed in all the karmic fires of this world.
But far from being saved, those who witness its form have their eyes burned by its intense light, and are enveloped in flame. The Doppel believes this immolation to be true salvation, and its master's obsession prevents her from looking back, so she carries yet more new karma upon coming to her senses.
MAGATSUMONONUSHI (Master: Toyo)
The Doppel of corrosion. Its form is a giant snake.
The master of this emotion is tied down by the ideal image that she desperately attempts to reach, in order to become closer to the mother that she admires, and sees a reflection of this in her Doppel's form.
The Doppel grows from its master's limbs and is entwined with her nervous system, thus robbing her of the ability to move.
When it senses someone experiencing mental pressure with its keen sense of smell, it bites them and begins to corrode them with its venom. None can escape from the venom, but they will forever be free from the pressure that was upon them.
Having thus witnessed the very destruction and slaughter that she abhors, its master becomes even more tightly bound by the curse that surrounds her, but the Doppel will never realize this.
CASSANDRA (Master: Amaryllis / Junia)
The Doppel of prophecy. Its form is a scale.
By viewing her scale-shaped Doppel, the master of this emotion is able to see people's futures.
In order to guarantee that its prophecies are objective, this Doppel is mainly composed of inorganic materials. One of its plates is engraved with a symbol meaning "hope," and the other with a symbol meaning "despair". The plates hold the respective weights of the lives that can be saved versus the lives that cannot, but since nobody other than its master can see them, few people listen to its master's prophecies.
Such is the curse bestowed upon the one who prayed to "save everyone," but killed her own maidenly heart in exchange.
10^-5
The witch of symbols. Her nature is revelation.
A more mature form of a witch who simply continues to proliferate herself, as if charged with an inexorable duty.
Once she realized that it was pointless to announce danger to the versions of herself in other eras, the witch finally comprehended her situation, and became able to watch over 5 eras with her foot planted firmly on the ground.
She has now learned how to properly guide others. When she sees a potential moment of growth for one of her other selves in one of those 5 eras, instead of alerting them to danger, she steals control of their body for just a moment and urges them in the direction she wants them to go.
(Meanwhile, the present-day Witch of Symbols takes advantage of the cast’s efforts to recombine Iroha’s lost essence, growing into an even larger form as it recombines itself alongside her:)
10^-7
The witch of symbols. Her nature is revelation.
A more mature form of a witch who simply continues to proliferate herself, as if charged with an inexorable duty.
In order to raise her parent witch to supremacy for the sake of proliferation, this witch has decided to feed herself to her parent.
In order to make herself into the supreme meal, she has manipulated and consumed many other witches herself.
The now-mature witch floats upon golden wings, can watch over 7 eras, and has even balanced out her essences of yin and yang to become a perfect dish with no peculiar or outstanding flavors.
The lofty sound of her trumpet is directed towards the parent witch who gave her the gift of life.
10^-43
The witch of symbols. Her nature is revelation.
A witch who attempts to bring herself to the pinnacle of prosperity, while interfering with every era in the dizzyingly-long line of history leading to the present day.
By interfering with the system that overturns the fate of Puella Magi and absorbing its world-covering membrane, the witch's body has become a single massive city that spreads across the land, and her Labyrinth is vast enough to engulf the whole Earth.
She is now only one step away from suffusing herself through the past and future, making herself into the only individual that exists in any era. The last step is to absorb the power of infinity into herself, but because she can no longer move around on her own, she's forced to rely on her own offshoots.
The Doppel of ticket-taking. Its form is a weatherwheel.
The master of this emotion has inherited tiny hopes from the past, and has practically become a legendary being.
Her Doppel has grown larger in proportion to its master's inherited hope, and has matured into a heavy stone building as if to represent the weight she carries.
The Doppel is impatient to be released from this weight, so it's waiting for an opportunity to make hope a reality by unleashing its maximum power in one huge, instantaneous burst.
Its disproportionate power is strong enough to control even the weather, so if this were to occur, the ensuing storms and volcanic eruptions would surely change the landscape into that of a newborn planet.
Its master, who can sense its endless power, is thus constantly keeping watch to prevent it from stealing control.
Creatures from miscellaneous events after Puella Historia:
“VILLAIN OF CHAOS” RUMOR
A Rumor duplicate of Hanna Sarasa, created by Mikoto Sena shortly before breaking away from the Magia Record and going on the run. Since she's based on Hanna's behaviour after Mikoto died, she can use hypnosis magic by default. Due to an oversight in the wording of her Rumor, she literally "feeds on" negative emotions.
“ENDLESS MIRROR” RUMOR
A Rumor meant to serve as a vessel for Mikoto Sena, created by her shortly before breaking away from the Magia Record and going on the run. Traps people in a mirror dimension if they try to search for Mikoto.
After Hanna and Mikoto run out of energy and pass away for good, Nemu removes their respective Rumors from her book, as a show of respect for how they chose to go out.
WINCHESTER (Master: Rumor Mikoto)
The Doppel of seclusion. Its form is a mirror.
The master of this emotion refuses to accept the loss of the person who she must convey her feelings to.
This Doppel only houses beautiful memories, and is constructed from prisms that shoot light in every possible direction.
The form of her loved one is hidden in the light, but the Doppel itself is unable to find it.
After much trial and error, she reflected herself into the mirror in an attempt to peek inside, but all that was left was her own symmetrical form.
The Doppel grows heavy with impurity as its master's depressed feelings collect inside. When its emotions overflow, light bursts from its illuminated prisms, and those who witness it will have their hearts instantly stained with darkness.
PEEPING CASTLE TOWN RUMOR
"My, have you heard? Who'd you hear it from?
The Peeping Castle Town, and the Rumor thereof!
Take one quick leftward spin around Mizuna's old castle town, trot up the stairs, clap your hands in prayer…
Then peek back through your legs at the town, and say "hello" to the houses of ye olden days!
If you spend too long staring, you'll get dragged right over to the other side!
It's a rumor that ALL of Mizuna's history nerds are talking about.
Come one, come all!"
(*Makes a surprise appearance in one of Rumor Mikoto's character-story battles.)
New Year's Emas up to 2024!!
HOMULILLY
The witch of nutcrackers. Her nature is self-completion.
Her teeth have spilled out, her skull has melted, and her eyeballs too have fallen.
Only a promise lies planted in her pitiful head, no longer able to crack nuts,
but because she awakened while still inside of her shell, she still bears strong traces of her form as a Puella Magi.
Her minions call her a misshapen failure for this, and are quite ashamed of her.
LITTLE GOAT'S DREAM (*“Yagi no ko no yume”)
"A poor, sad dream that a gentle-hearted girl saw in a corner of this night.
Fill your big head with the stuffing of your pillow, wet with self-loathing,
and cry and wail as much as you like tonight.
The dancers alone will take your hand."
LITTLE BEAR'S DREAM (*“Kuma no ko no yume”)
"A poor, tearful dream that a lonely girl saw in a corner of this night.
Fill your empty belly with soft cotton stuffing,
and dance around selfishly as much as you like tonight.
The dancers alone know who you are."
Creatures that show up in Madoka Magia Scene 0:
ADELBERT
Minions of the witch of rose gardens. Their role is to surveil.
When they find a human, they emit a bell-like warning noise and headbutt them mercilessly. They have 20/20 vision.
They came to Kamihama from a place called Mitakihara, in order to guard the landscaping minions who likewise serve the Witch of Rose Gardens. They almost got wiped out by a fanged, red-haired Puella Magi along the way, but since their group only consisted of minions with no witch, they were lucky enough to escape her wrath.
GISELA
The witch of silver. Her nature is freedom.
She lurks in a Labyrinth that moves at high speed, but the witch herself is extremely sluggish.
She's unfortunately unable to use any sort of scientific power.
Her whole body once gleamed with dazzling silver, but she became terribly rusty while gazing at the shoreline at sunset.
ROBERTA
The witch of birdcages. Her nature is rage.
She loudly stamps her feet inside her cage, raging at all the things that never came true for her.
This witch is extremely fond of alcohol, and her familiars are likewise extremely flammable.
????? (Witch of bulls)
(*From the Different Story manga. Only appears in story scenes; identified as "witch of bulls" in Live2D parameters.)
(Ulla, Elsamaria, Michaela and Gotz also have encyclopedia entries, but they have the same descriptions and artwork as the OG show. ...Annnnnd there's a 30-image limit on Tumblr posts now. Oops. Oh well.)
ICHIZO
The witch of nighthawks. Her nature is to escape.
This witch fled from a terrifying darkness. This witch fled from a blindingly-bright hope. This witch fled from those who she couldn't save. This witch fled from the future where she was meant to be saved. Up to her very last moments, this witch was unable to accept the part of herself that fled.
She continually flies throughout her Labyrinth, her sights set on the mirage of a red star. But her wings and self-conception have melted like mud, blotting out both past and present, with all objective and meaning now lost.
This witch is both there and not there. This witch does not connect with anyone else. She drowns all others in mud, and eliminates all individuals besides herself. Nobody is able to bestow anything upon this witch.
(*Kuroe's witch form from the anime, who appears as a boss fight when Kuroe breaks free from her Doppel during her, Yuu, and Shii's event. Her description in the anime booklet was simply: "an ugly hawk with wings of mud.")
Yesterday an article about the surname Tsunashi has become one of the top articles on Yahoo Japan. I decided to translate what it says because it’s pretty interesting to put on this ainana blog!!
You probably know that the character “十” which is Ryuu’s last name is just the number 10, which is usually read “juu” (じゅう). In one interview, it was said that the staff decided to give him the surname “Tsunashi,” which is written with the same kanji, because it’s a very unusual surname.Turns out that apparently, the surname just straight up doesn’t exist.
So the article says that there’s something called “Ghost Surnames” (幽霊名字 - yuurei myouji) which refer to surnames that don’t actually exist, but that media like drama series, manga, or anime influenced to such an extent that people actually feel like they exist.
Why is this character read “Tsunashi” then?
When counting in Japanese, the most basic counter is “tsu” (つ)which you attach next to numbers. So one is “hitotsu” (一つ), two is “futatsu (二つ), three is mittsu (三つ), etc. However, “ten” is an irregular read “too” (とお). Because there is no “tsu” attached, a reading was invented of “tsu-nashi,” as “nashi” (無し/なし) means “none/without”, so “no tsu.”
This reading was popularized by the drama called 『Arigatou』 aired in the 1970s. In that drama, one of the characters has the surname 十 read as Tsunashi. Because the drama was wildly popular, gaining viewership rates of over 40%, people found that this new reading for the character was witty and interesting, and remembered it and shared it around. This is how it entered popular culture and people ended up thinking it actually exists. The article also says that in reality, only the unusual reading “momogi” exists as a surname from the character 十 (it was obtained by removing the slanted lines from the character 木.)
For this reason, ainana twitter users have realized that our Ryunosuke is actually the only Tsunashi...........
Reverie of Reveria/I Can Hear the Sound of Happiness (English translation)
(At the time that I posted this, there was no official upload of the song. This may be a cover, but it's official from the Level-5 channel, so I'm adding it!)
"I can hear it, your voice"
I remember seeing something about a Fantasy Life Switch game a few months ago, but I haven’t seen any news about it since. I hope it’s not stuck in dev hell. The 3DS game was one of my favorites as a child, and the credits song made me cry lol.
Speaking of that song, I translated it! There’s already one translation floating around online, but I think some of the subjects are reversed? So I decided to also try. If I’m wrong, I’m wrong.
As long as you credit me (lunari162) and follow my rules, you're free to use this translation. You are also welcome to make edits for accuracy, but I'd prefer that you ask me first!
I can hear it, your voice
I wake up in the morning light
and I can hear the sounds of the town
Today, too, another day begins to fly by
When I lifted my head and looked at the sky,
I found a round panda-shaped cloud
The warmth I always felt
on my hand touching your cheek,
that lives alongside you*
is the sound of happiness that I hear in this town
I can hear it, your voice
And soon, footsteps are born
A bed with white sheets on top
Someday, I'll dream with you
On the day that I held you in my arms,
teardrops flowed
Both the smile and the crying face that you showed me
are the sound of happiness that I hear in this town
Floating in the sky, on the other side of the moon,**
I was watching
A hope that faces the future
is the sound of happiness that I hear in this town
Tonight, the star of happiness shines***
*this line might mean “(the warmth) of living together with you” instead, but I don't think it does because it doesn't have ことの. I'm not 100% certain, though, so I'm sharing both interpretations
**could also be translated as “on the other side of the moon that floats in the sky.” I'm not sure if 空に浮かぶ refers to the singer (who I've always assumed to be Yuelia) or the moon
***literally “the star of happiness will fall.” 星降る夜 is a common phrase meaning that the night sky is full of stars, so I went with that idea instead

Magia Record - Doppel encyclopedia translations (Arc 2 et.al)
Splitting ‘em off into a separate post once again!
(Links to other posts:
-Enemy creatures (Arc 1)
-Enemy creatures (Arc 2)
-Doppels (Arc 1 main cast)
-Creatures & Doppels (Post-Arc 2)
-Doppels (majority of supporting cast)
-Doppels (OG Madoka and spinoffs)
(*Full spoilers for Arc 2, plus some post-Arc 2 content. Warning for insects + macabre imagery, as per usual for these posts.)
TIRACCHANA (Master: Yuna Kureha)
The Doppel of chastisement. Its form is a Hell tormentor.
The master of this emotion is unable to control the emotions that are pent up within her; these swollen emotions conversely take control of her, as if to replace her entirely. As a result, the Doppel that would ordinarily be born is overtaken by an infant-like flesh growth, which continually absorbs energy as if to help it mature.
The flesh growth is a mass of pure instinct, lacking even the slightest trace of logical thought. It simply crushes anything that displeases it as its emotions dictate, and freely devours energy. There are rare occasions when it attempts to explain itself with words, but it can only speak in a voice like air escaping from a hollow cavern, unable to convey anything.
Having a full stomach puts it in a good mood, but it apparently tends to spew energy from its mouth if it eats slightly too much.
MERKAVA (Master: Hikaru Kirari)
The Doppel of sluggishness. Its form is a chariot.
The master of this emotion feels utmost joy in working for the sake of others, but is terribly lazy when it comes to her own self. As such, she has nothing but mixed feelings about dragging around a being that represents herself.
Because this Doppel is powered by its master's own strength, it cannot take action by itself, but upon being thrown by its master, it will instantly crush its enemies with its massive, sturdy body.
The Doppel itself loves being of use to people, so it only intends to hug its enemies as it's flying toward them, but since being thrown causes a large blade to jut out of its body, it always thinks that it's failed.
HALIFAX (Master: Ao Kasane)
The Doppel of unfavorable consequence. Its form is a mass of clouds.
The master of this emotion projects an unfeeling veneer, but in fact feels very much. She is unable to relieve herself of the blame she feels over being pushed to harm others, and to escape from this predicament, she harms others again in turn, perpetuating a negative cycle.
Upon capturing its master, this Doppel attempts to release her from that suffering by decapitating her, granting her a feeling of relief as she takes responsibility for just one brief moment. But since its master's head contains a keen mind, she recognizes that this is merely a self-satisfying illusion. This internal conflict causes the unrelieved blame to coalesce into a single giant, which attempts to release its directionless emotions by taking them out on whatever's nearby.
Its master's guilt will likely continue to amass itself, neither being condemned nor dissolving in the wind.
LAKEHURST (Master: Juri Ooba)
The Doppel of endorsement. Its form is an airship.
At the sight of her Doppel trying to immediately release the massive energy that's built up within her body and mind, the master of this emotion sends it a glorious cheer of her own, and works to vent her frustrations along with said Doppel.
This Doppel encourages one to immediately act on every thought that comes into their head, to the point of considering self-control an outright evil, and it likewise never holds back for a single moment. This extends not just to things like eating and sleeping, but even to sudden destructive impulses, and the Doppel thus lays waste to its surroundings while dragging its master along. If one dared to try and stop it by applying external pressure, its discontent would spike beyond its limit, and the resulting explosion would blast away everything in its vicinity.
TARA (Master: Shizuka Tokime)
The Doppel of peace and security. Its form is a thousand arms.
The master of this emotion devotes her life to others to a self-sacrificing degree, and because her Doppel shares a similar mindset, the two are deeply linked with each other.
This Doppel reacts sensitively to those who its master views as enemies, and if necessary, it will wield violence against said enemies to instill in them an understanding of the wonders of altruism. Those who receive its teachings will suffer hideous injuries, but due to this Doppel's brilliant gold shine and the artistic nature of the violence it inflicts, its victims become so fascinated as to forget the pain entirely, and are said to become its captives before they even know it.
TARA (Master: Shizuka Tokime (New Year's sunrise ver.))
The Doppel of peace and security. Its form is a thousand arms.
The master of this emotion intends to enjoy the beginning of the new year to its absolute fullest– enough to forget about about all the ills of the world– and because her Doppel shares a similar mindset, the two are deeply linked with each other.
Since her Doppel is working to have as much fun as possible from the very first day of their break, it reacts sensitively to things that its master is interested by, and continually works to entertain her.
It will easily resort to cheating in order to assist its master: it not only deems her quiz answers correct no matter how many mistaken answers she gives, but it even tries to grant her victory in the New Year broadcasts' channel viewership wars.
On top of that, this Doppel blesses its master with dreams of auspicious beginnings when she sleeps at its kotatsu, so she seems to have become utterly inseparable from it.
OAJI (Master: Chiharu Hiroe)
The Doppel of selection. Its form is a sodegarami.
The master of this emotion proudly believes that its ability exists to reveal and capture evil, but in truth, it is a Doppel that seeks 6 human sacrifices to plunge into the depths in its master's place.
No matter how well an adversary hides, its lantern head will expose all beneath the light of day, and its three-pronged claws will drag them down to the bottom of the swamp.
The more targets it drags into the swamp, the more powerful this Doppel becomes, but that power is sure to descend upon its master as a calamity one day. Nevertheless, this Doppel continues to desperately store up power for the sake of eliminating those who would do harm to its master.
MARITA (Master: Sunao Toki)
The Doppel of resignation. Its form is an assassin bug.
The master of this emotion inwardly projects her past self upon the sharp and ferocious being that emerges from her, and looks upon it with regret.
This shrewdly, silently-moving Doppel approaches its targets without alerting them to its presence, then bends its needle mouth like a whip to skewer them and suck out their life force. Even against tough opponents, it approaches stealthily and uses its four limbs to whittle them down before feeding.
Its master simply watches as its crystal is stained red, powerless to stop the Doppel as it drags her to and fro.
SCYLLA (Master: Himena Aika)
The Doppel of perpetuity. Its form is a portrait.
The master of this emotion holds mixed feelings towards her Doppel: though she feels a mysterious sense of kinship with it, she's also frightened by the sense that her heart could be laid bare by looking directly at it.
The Doppel responds by putting its master to sleep within the sphere connected to its body, in order to free her from the emotions that so vex her. While she sleeps, it attempts to fulfill her desires by stamping out each and every foe that refuses to understand her.
Incidentally, the Doppel's body is also a mere makeshift form projected from its master's heart, and changes shape based on her own thoughts. It currently takes the form of a lovelorn wolf seeking its mate.
The makeshift form will repeatedly regenerate as long as the sphere and ring remain intact, so caution is a must.
AZTEKIUM (Master: Shigure Miyabi)
The Doppel of alienation. Its form is areoles.
Despite being excessively cautious of those around her, the master of this emotion has no means by which to deal with the problem herself, and thus is perfectly comfortable being protected by the being that emerges from her.
This Doppel wields sharp thorns and a thick epidermis, and much like its master, it's desperate to protect itself.
While not actively aggressive, one of its switches flips each time it receives stress, and its restraints come further undone. Should all the switches turn on, it'll mercilessly blast away any obstacle before it with its electromagnetic railgun. When the subject its master wishes to avoid is the same as the cause of this Doppel's stress, its accuracy rate skyrockets.
ABIGAIL (Master: Hagumu Azumi)
The Doppel of false bravado. Its form is a reversible garment.
Despite knowing about the beings called Doppels, the master of this emotion is still paralyzed with fear upon seeing this representation of herself that appeared from within her heart.
In contrast to its master, who displays her full power against witches, her Doppel's inner lining boasts lethal capabilities against other Puella Magi. But since its personality is similar to its master's, if it's summoned in the heat of battle, it immediately panics and assumes a defensive posture.
Incidentally, its master closes her eyes out of fear whenever her Doppel manifests, so she's never gotten a good look at it. Any enemies will have vanished by the time she opens her eyes, so she admires the Doppel considerably.
9DAIME NUE (Master: San Kagura)
(*Japanese for "Ninth-generation Nue"; named after the Ninth-Generation Tamaya Shobei and his automaton depicting the slaying of the Nue.)
The Doppel of stagnation. Its form is a security system.
The master of this emotion absolutely cannot accept any change in the things that brought her to where she is today.
In response to this feeling of its master's, this Doppel displays the ability to notice even the slightest movement of a pebble by the side of a road, the sound of a pin dropping, and so on, in order to catch every little detail of the changes occuring in its vicinity.
If a change occurred as a result of a natural phenomenon, it will quietly tend to it and return it to normal. But if somebody intentionally caused it, the Doppel will never forgive them; it will launch the masks attached to it in order to give pursuit, and is absolutely guaranteed to capture and punish its target.
It's bad at defending itself from weapons such as arrows– which its master has mixed feelings about, given that she uses projectiles herself.
OXFORD (Master: Miyuri Yukari)
The Doppel of stark candor. Its form is a shoe.
The master of this emotion is dumbfounded by the countless legs sprouting out from her vicinity and pressing in on her. However, she doesn't actually seem bothered by them, and is in fact staring blankly into space from a sheer overload of joy.
Meanwhile, her Doppel has had no luck whatsoever in its search for a foot that will fit it, and has filled itself to the brim with nothing but dud legs to dispose of. But it still hasn't given up on meeting its soulmate (sole-mate) one day, and thus tends to throw tantrums out of frustration.
It vents its stress by leaping high into the heavens, then falling back to earth in a plummeting stomp. Apparently, it can relieve more stress the higher it flies.
CUAUHTITLAN (Master: Lavi Himuro)
The Doppel of maganimity. Its form is an altar.
The master of this emotion continually offers up prayers as she commiserates in sadness alongside her Doppel, which attempts to send its brethren to a world of nonexistence that has no sorrow or suffering.
When this highly-sensitive Doppel perceives sorrow or suffering, it reflexively takes action to save the subject of those feelings. These actions are borne out of a combination of the Doppel's dislike of bloodshed, and its merciful desire to return the subject to nature– a world that has no need for emotions. Those who are bathed in the light of fertility and abundance that it releases from its mouth are instantly reduced to ash, becoming fertilizer for the land that they stood on.
Incidentally, this Doppel looks the same no matter what angle it's viewed from, and even its master has never seen it from the back.
MARGUERITE (Master: Asahi Miura)
The Doppel of safeguarding. Its form is a fortress.
The master of this emotion resists others' attempts to trespass in private matters such as her hobbies and interests.
Her Doppel is covered by a sturdy outer shell, and serves as a private space for its master that shuts out surrounding information and forcibly creates distance with the outside. Should any external nuisances appear, its master can snipe and eliminate them via the mechanism affixed to its top.
The Doppel itself, however, is equally resistant to outside meddling. Should anyone attempt to speak with it or touch it, it will try to calm itself down by thrashing around in a panic until its target has been reduced to smithereens. When this happens, the master inside apparently gets shaken to the point of utter exhaustion.
HALOMONAS TITANICAE (Master: Aleksandra Kurusu)
The Doppel of longing. Its form is a ship's figurehead.
The master of this emotion locked away her own love, and continues sleeping without ever putting it into words.
Her Doppel is an avatar of unsinkability that emerges from the water's depths, and refuses to allow anyone to give up on any kind of love.
Upon seeing someone who it or its master is fond of, it puts their feelings towards that person into song while waving its wings and mast as part of the ultimate concert. If you don't give any response after observing the performance, you'll be sliced to ribbons by its lattice-shaped mast, so applauding is the safe option. But either way, listening to its song will cause the iron in your body to become oxidized and make you sick, so people say it's best to just avoid listening in the first place.
VLASTENSKE (Master: Urara Yume)
The Doppel of camaraderie. Its form is a wooden doll.
The master of this emotion is delighted at how her Doppel performs together with her, but also suspects that she herself may be being manipulated.
This Doppel's excellent communication skills allow it to not only interact with various people besides its master, but to captivate and befriend absolutely anyone with its comical movements.
However, that friendship is proof that they've been bewitched by the Doppel and made easy to manipulate. Harm has apparently befallen those who befriended the Doppel in practice– being crushed by a cigar box while juggling together, for instance.
JING (Master: Nayuta Satomi)
The Doppel of absurdity. Its form is a jiàzi huāliǎn (*"arrogant painted-face").
The master of this emotion is both surprised by the brutality within herself, and slightly exasperated by her Doppel's shallow way of thinking.
This Doppel doesn't pay attention to its surroundings, and has a habit of jumping to hasty conclusions about the things that enter its field of view. It may prance about with joy when it ought to be doing battle, and may seethe with anger when it ought to be enjoying itself.
Despite being stubborn and reluctant to change its mind, it displays amazing practical strength when its behavior aligns with the situation. None can dodge its shapeshifting blade, and any attack will be deflected by its lotus flower's lotus effect. Those who've seen it in combat have praised the sight as beautiful, as if it were dancing the entire time.
Incidentally, it seems to think of its master as a kindred spirit who resembles its own absurd self.
CASUARIUS (Master: Mikage Yakumo)
The Doppel of tantrums. Its form is a chick.
The master of this emotion has a strong heart that is not easily shaken, but the one thing that frustrates her is her own youth. Since she and her Doppel are similar in this regard, she cannot bring herself to like it.
This young Doppel likewise hates itself, as it hasn't yet matured enough to freely control its limbs, and is incapable of doing anything besides beg for food. As such, it's irritated by its master's own youth as well. It builds up stress from the moment it's born, and relieves said stress via loud, constant chirping.
But when its stress reaches its peak and explodes, the Doppel breaks free from its shell, leaping around wildly and leaving hideous scratch marks on everything in sight. When its master's stress is added on top of that, the carnage is said to become even worse.
BREADMAN (Master: Sudachi Sawa)
The Doppel of nomadicism. Its form is a cookie.
The master of this emotion is anguished by the sight of her Doppel innocently playing without a mote of hesitation, as she feels that it is both a symbol of freedom and of guilt to her.
This Doppel acts out of pure instinct as it freely floats and drifts around. Everything it does– yelling loudly, eating food, wrapping itself in lively colors– it does simply for its own enjoyment. No matter who it causes sorrow or pain to, it remains unaffected by this world's concept of sin.
Perhaps because it seems like an unblemished child at first glance, it gives off the impression of a pitiful being that can't grow up, so the older its victims are, the more likely it is for sadness to take precedent over their terror.
BREADMAN (Master: Sudachi Sawa (Valentine's ver.))
The Doppel of nomadicism. Its form is a cookie.
The master of this emotion loathes how her Doppel attempts to win the love of others with only its cries, as it feels like a symbol of her own naïveté.
The Doppel acts out of pure instinct: only ever considering how it can make things easier for itself, never putting in any hard work, and always getting someone else to help it. Expecting it to return any favors is pointless, for no matter how much one may help the Doppel or show it love, it simply floats and drifts around.
Meanwhile, its master puts in effort to bring people together, and the sight of her Doppel attracting people simply by dressing itself up and making cute cries results in even more mixed feelings for her.
GOTHEL (Master: Yozuru Sasame)
The Doppel of courtship. Its form is a tower.
The master of this emotion once had love engraved within her, albeit tied to chains of grief. But after having carved part of herself away, she cannot directly feel it, and lives on with hollow freedom in a wide-open world.
This Doppel is likewise unable to sense the love that it holds within. It devotedly seeks out those who will treat it with care, and upon finding someone whose magic or environment resembles its own, it captures them with its opened ribs and mercilessly attempts to squeeze them into itself. But no matter how hard this Doppel tries to incorporate its target, it can never fill itself with that which it seeks.
LUCA (Master: Livia Medeiros)
The Doppel of duḥkha-dhātu. Its form is a tree diagram.
Due to the presence of this being that represents the origin of life, the master of this emotion is painfully aware of the inescapable yoke that forces her closer to becoming one who does harm.
This Doppel speaks of nothing and indicates nothing, simply growing its tree of life ever larger with the impurity it absorbs from its master. Though its form is wrapped in swaddling cloth, it is every bit as unblessed as its master, and it harms those who oppose it by maliciously scattering the impurity it gained from its birth.
If another being were to become trapped within the tree diagram, they would surely fall into a crucible of agony. Only the master can become an actual part of the tree.
(This space reserved for Sakuya Suzuka.)
FREDERICA (Master: Mitsuru Inami)
The Doppel of the public eye. Its form is compound eyes.
The master of this emotion is particularly bothered by other people's attention, and thus fears her own Doppel.
This many-eyed Doppel is the very embodiment of public scrutiny. When nobody else is around, it takes the form of a vividly-colored flowerbed. But if someone is lured in by this appearance and sets foot inside, they'll instantly be skewered by countless lines of sight, rendering them unable to move. The longer they're watched, the more their head will be filled with long-forgotten past shames, eventually leaving them incapable of any action other than self-denial.
However, its countless eyeballs don't actually get along very well with each other, and often leave ample room to escape when they break out into an argument. Combined with how the master herself often stops the Doppel out of fright, there's surprisingly many targets who've escaped unscathed.
(This space reserved for Ranka Chizu and Chika Aoba.)
VICTORIA (Master: Yuuna Kaharu)
The Doppel of dissatisfaction. Its form is compote.
The master of this emotion views her Doppel coldly, as it puts on air of elegance, yet becomes ugly in order to fulfill its desires.
This Doppel is not only well aware of its luxurious beauty, but seems to think of its own status as a free pass to indulge itself. It lacks self-control as a result, and exhausts every possible means available to grasp that which interests it.
Its attachment to things it has never seen before is particularly tenacious. However, it has a habit of fulfilling its desires via its appetite, and shoves everything that interests it right into its stomach. As such, it seems that this Doppel has only ever learned the taste of those targets of interest.
TROLLEY (Master: Jun Kazari)
The Doppel of nostalgia. Its form is a lingering image.
While the master of this emotion is captivated by her Doppel and the retro-style scenery and items it displays, she takes care to draw a line between it and herself in order to avoid being engulfed by its charm.
This Doppel rejects the passage of time, continuing to remain inside a nostalgic landscape. It thus repeats the same span of time over and over, and is always seeking family-like beings with whom it can share that time.
The master understands her Doppel's intent, and thus never looks back at the Doppel as it perpetually follows behind her. But according to those engulfed by it, time within can be spent in a meltingly relaxing state as one returns to a child's view of the world.
CLAUDIA (Master: Mitsune Miwa)
The Doppel of futile struggle. Its form is a curtain rail.
The master of this emotion is fond of her Doppel, as it makes for a convenient hiding spot. When her mind and body are exhausted from continually putting up a false front, she can hide within it to soothe herself.
The Doppel is likewise vehement in hiding its true self, so it both understands its master's feelings, and believes that the two of them share a common destiny as partners who have seen each other's true nature.
If anyone were to attempt to unveil what hides within, it would desperately fight back with both its sharp body and the curtains adorning it, and if anyone were to glimpse inside, it would not permit their survival under any circumstances.
It's said to sometimes dance about by itself when it's in a good mood, but its master is the only known witness of this.
GOSIRSA (Master: Ryouko Natsu)
The Doppel of stalwart honesty. Its form is an ox cart.
The master of this emotion has faith in her honest, straightforward nature, but is also aware of how her own inflexibility may drive her into a corner in the future.
Though this Doppel plows ahead with singular purpose, its sense of urgency overtakes its body and constantly puts it on the verge of tumbling forward. But thanks to the support it receives from its many wheeled arms, it will push onward until it physically cannot continue. Even if it meets with an obstacle, its buzzsaw arms will likely carve straight through.
As such, this single-minded Doppel serves to reaffirm its master's way of being.
The Doppel of dismantlement. Its form is a soot lion.
The master of this motion patiently waits for her sorrow to be relieved by the destruction that her Doppel bestows.
In order to build a fair and equitable paradise in accordance with its master's will, the Doppel attempts to destroy everything, while simultaneously playing a requiem not unlike an anguished wail.
However, its actions only amount to mere dismantlement. Though it can reduce everything around it to smithereens, only hollow cadavers are left behind. And because the Doppel itself doesn't realize this, it will continue reducing its surroundings to smithereens for as long as equality fails to manifest-- thus, it simply rampages until its strength gives out.
The Doppel of memento mori. Its form is flower petals.
The master of this emotion resents the environment in which she lives, and works to accept its approaching ruin.
Though this Doppel previously lacked any method of granting death directly, its master's transformation has helped it discover how to pluck lives by itself. The flame dwelling within its scythe burns with the light of the lives it has absorbed, and further absorbs the lives of those who become entranced by its shine.
Even if one were to envelop the Doppel and its master with every form of kindness in order to stop them, its flower petals have withered away, and it has torn off every bit of grace that it once possessed. Such kind sentiment would only be smothered in grief and fail to reach them.
CUAUHTITLAN (Master: Lavi Himuro (Kimochi ver.))
The Doppel of maganimity. Its form is an altar.
The master of this emotion has lost her last ray of hope, sunk deep into resignation, and believes that annihilation itself is her only means of salvation.
The Doppel, having sympathized with her resignation, attempts to erase their beloved brethren before any of them experience sorrow or despair.
Its actions are filled with a merciful desire to close the curtain on their lives via peaceful sleep. Those who are bathed in the light of maganimity that it releases from its mouth are utterly annihilated, with no traces or remnants left behind, and are thus released from their suffering.
Yet its master still hides one tiny bit of hope in the very back of her mind, and is wracked with conflict as she and the Doppel envision the end that they'll bring.
SUKHAVATI SMRITI (Master: Kagome Satori)
The Doppel of dissemination. Its form is a heavenly flower.
Though the master of this emotion dreams of a paradisiacal world, the roots of her being are stolen away by her Doppel.
This Doppel lacks any consciousness; it merely extends its roots into the ground to sap away energy, with which it causes a single, massive flower to bloom. The flower envelops the sky, grows far enough to blanket absolutely everything, and moves the complicated patterns on its petals like a kaleidoscope. Those who see the patterns cease thinking, and are enticed into a land of bliss by the scale-like pollen that it makes them breathe in.
People spread stories to one another of this path to Paradise, but whether this really is true happiness or not is unknown.
The Doppel will not stop for anything, but if you pull out its roots, it'll immediately wither away and vanish.
GIOVANNA (Master: Infinite Iroha)
The Doppel of vocalization. Its form is emotion.
The master of each and every one of these emotions works to collect the thoughts and feelings that overflow, while circulating them between herself and her Doppel.
This Doppel can summon forth all emotions, but even if it were to mix all of those emotions together, they would not combine into a chaotic black. They form brilliant, white rays of hope, filled with the elements of light.
Those who are bathed in the strongest of these rays will not only become unable to control their own emotions, but will even be dissolved at the atomic level, transforming them into raw energy with which to create a future… though they do appear to feel ultimate joy as well.
However, because this Doppel maintains its body via a miraculous balance of conflicting emotions, it will vanish if its master's emotions veer too heavily in a particular direction, and will leave behind nothing but a guidepost pointing to tomorrow.
WINCHESTER (Master: Sena Mikoto)
The Doppel of seclusion. Its form is a mirror.
The master of this emotion is angered by how her Doppel disdains reality yet refuses to move, and attempts to take control of it herself.
This Doppel drew out a precise and intricate ideal world for itself, but placing a mess of complicated emotions onto that world has rendered it unable to move. There was a time when it tried to project its imagination onto mirrors to weave its ideal world, but the products of its own imagination felt not only bland, but outright shallow. In the end, after continually agonizing and chipping away at its own heart, its form changed into a flat, symmetrical shadow.
Sick of the sight of her own Doppel hiding and worrying, its master proposed that they simply tack on the parts that were missing-- to find living sacrifices with which to supplant its imagination. The Doppel agrees with its master's suggestion.
ECKERT (Master: ???)
The Doppel of scrutinization.
(No encyclopedia entry. Appears as a post-Arc 2 event challenge enemy.)
MARTINA (Master: ???)
The Doppel of buffoonery.
(No encyclopedia entry. Appears as a post-Arc 2 event challenge enemy.)

MCDOUGAL (Master: Karin Misono)
The Doppel of banditry. Its form is a mortsafe.
The master of this emotion has a timid nature, which gave rise to her stubborn and defiant Doppel. It fears loss, and is fixated on gain.
This Doppel is just as light-fingered as its master, snatching up whatever it can get a hold of. It may even go so far as to target its own allies.
It's extremely greedy, and so tightfisted that it will never part with anything it has obtained.
HENRIETTA (Master: Asuka Tatsuki)
The Doppel of reckless advance. Its form is a war drum.
The master of this emotion is heartily inspired by this Doppel's power, and sees it as a means of bettering herself.
After rousing her fighting spirit with a beat of its drum, she issues commands that turn her allies into bold and fearless warriors.
However, the Doppel has also inherited its master's carelessness: once its powers are activated, her allies tend to commit massive blunders regardless of their own intent. This irrational nature leads to harsh reviews from most allies.
It also shares its master's penchant for declaring ritual suicide after mistakes, which makes it a rather troublesome Doppel.
*(Asuka’s section in Magia Archive vol.1 also happens to include a scrapped Doppel design from early in development, when it was known as the Doppel of Marshalling. According to Inu Curry, this draft version was conceived based on a general summary of Asuka’s character, and was changed to better reflect her personality in the game’s finalized script.)
HENRIETTA (Master: Asuka Tatsuki (New Year's Dragon ver.))
The Doppel of reckless advance. Its form is a mikoshi.
The master of this emotion is hesitant to stand out so much, but seems to be enjoying herself nonetheless.
The Doppel converts the size of its master's joy into light that radiates from within its body. On top of that, it also expresses said joy by causing money and treasures such as koban coins to erupt from the places it attacks.
Those who are blinded by its wicked light and swarm to it like flies will be struck on the head by the Doppel, as if to say "how dare you succumb to worldly passions so soon after New Year's!". This rids them of their worldly passions... but also their life, so nobody actually manages to grab hold of the treasure.
The Doppel also fears that its brightly-shining master is actually the one most consumed by worldly passion, but it's turning a blind eye.
BRODERIE (Master: Kanoko Yayoi)
The Doppel of torn seams. Its form is a thread-cutter.
The master of this emotion loathes her Doppel, which wields the exact opposite ability to her own.
Her Doppel is able to loosen the seams of anything it touches. Once it uses a tiny bit of magic to open up a small tear, it can widen that tear to destroy any object, or even any concept-- a truly fearsome power to display.
However, this Doppel only seems interested in destroying its master's own creations. It exclusively targets and ruins things she's already worked to stitch together.
Additionally, this Doppel boasts abnormally strong self-replication abilities despite its low supply of magic, and in comparison to the magic that it retains via its overwhelming conservation of energy, its body is extremely large.
AODAMO (Master: Natsuki Utsuho)
The Doppel of invigoration. Its form is a megaphone.
The master of this emotion believes her Doppel to be a beneficial presence that embodies her personal qualities, and doesn't yet know that it's a dangerous being that wrings every bit of use it can get out of those it cheers on.
The Doppel's main body is surrounded by hovering ghosts, meant to mesmerize those it cheers on and force them to fight until they drop dead. Once someone is possessed by a ghost, they will serve as a meat shield to guard the Doppel's master until death.
CYAN (Master: Hinano Miyako)
The Doppel of indiscretion. Its form is smog.
The master of this emotion is greatly pleased with her newly-enlongated legs.
Each of its long legs produces gas from chemical reactions-- the right leg via boiling, the left via condensation-- which then wafts up to form the Doppel's upper body.
Its gaseous body boasts a strong resilience to physical attacks, but its one flaw is that its surroundings are harmed by the toxins flowing from it. When this Doppel appears, all those nearby will be severely poisoned, regardless of whether they're friend or foe. Even its own master would hardly be able to stand it without her gas mask on.
This Doppel is also very inquisitive, and is thrilled by the sight of rare witches or monsters.
DON ROCINANTE (Master: Sasara Minagi)
The Doppel of honorable pride. Its form is a gorget.
The master of this emotion is greatly pleased by her Doppel, believing it to be valiant and perfectly suited to her, but its gleaming silver body becomes frigid in winter and blazing hot in summer.
The Doppel is just as proud as its master, standing tall and forthright in the face of any challenge. But because it holds all-but-pointless confidence in its strong, stalwart body, it often soldiers directly into the path of any attack that it may receive, and naturally suffers as a result.
Its body also blesses its master as an impenetrable suit of armor, but since its master is equally prideful and often dashes forward to strike the finishing blow, the two of them can end up in a mutual struggle for control over it.
MAURA (Master: Nanaka Tokiwa)
The Doppel of duplicity. Its form is a shop curtain.
This Doppel represents duplicity. The master of this emotion feels some sense of guilt over the fact that her Doppel hardly incorporates any floral elements.
This Doppel uses both a support-focused front side and an offensively-specialized back side to fight. In addition to being skilled at parrying enemy attacks, those who step through its curtain will have their souls led away to the world beyond.
SHALIMAR (Master: Emiri Kisaki)
The Doppel of temptation. Its form is serpent berries.
While the master of this emotion feels an affinity for her Doppel, which behaves as it pleases without any concept of good or evil, she also feels her own immaturity emanating from it.
This Doppel speaks directly into one's brain via ultrasonic tones, giving affirmation to anything and everything. The confidence and courage it grants are enough to wipe away any concern one may have.
Its comfortable words lead people to develop a great dependence on them, but because it well-meaningly affirms even people's aggressive or malicious emotions ad infinitum, it may unintentionally guide its targets towards the worst possible actions.
VAYU (Master: Shizuku Hozumi)
The Doppel of vagrancy. Its form is Fūten.
The master of this emotion is disappointed in her Doppel's ability, which, much like herself, ultimately cannot cross the sea no matter how fast it sprints about.
This Doppel can swiftly reduce anything its feet touches to an arid, weathered state, but if it stays still, it too will sink into the desert ground it produces. Thus, it's forced to constantly run around. It always runs around as fast as the wind as a result, but it's unable to fly.
When this Doppel appears, its master also sprints off along with it, but the weathered footprints left in their wake apparently make it very easy to track them down.
ELSIE (Master: Akira Shinobu)
The Doppel of authenticity. Its form is a pouch.
The master of this emotion doesn't think badly of her Doppel, but she certainly feels reluctant to let others see it.
Her Doppel boasts a dual nature: its adorable external appearance gives off a feeling of warmth, from its frills and other accessories to even its color scheme, but its interior gives the polar opposite impression.
When the pouch opens, adorable internal organs peek out in place of adorable pocket items, causing the blood of those who see it to run cold. The organs are also physically extremely cold, so anyone punched by them will be instantly frozen in place, both mentally and bodily.
Incidentally, the Doppel itself doesn't think that it's causing the freezing.
CARMELA (Master: Manaka Kurumi)
The Doppel of customer-gathering. Its form is propane.
The master of this emotion is displeased with this Doppel, which can only produce poisonous meals due to the toxins that seep from its body.
This Doppel uses the burners on the ends of its jellyfish-like tentacles to cook absolutely any ingredients into delicious poison meals, and forces its customers to enjoy a long stay in the seats that furnish its spherical glass head. The meals cooked by this witch have minds of their own, and are proactive in making surprise visits to customers' stomachs, which makes it possible to enjoy one's meal just by sitting in place.
Incidentally, the meals may be poisonous, but they taste very good. But despite their taste, they make abundant use of suspiciously-produced ingredients, including mystery meat from unknown sources, moaning vegetables, and fruit that walks around on its own.
HEIDE-JEKYLL (Master: Ria Ami)
The Doppel of charisma. Its form is a starfish.
The master of this emotion earnestly wishes to shine like the sun, and become the center of everyone's attention.
Her Doppel sympathizes with this desire for others' approval, and seeks ultimate beauty from its master's aspirations. As a result, it successfully crafts a translucent body that envelops a star-like molecular structure within, and it attempts to aid its master by replacing her current body with the new one.
The shining main form of the Doppel then stretches its tendrils in every direction to gather people who'll praise the newly-created body, forcibly capturing fans for its master. Trying to run from it will cause it to skewer you, but it'll let you off the hook if you just say a word or two in praise of its master's cuteness.
ANDREANA (Master: Kako Natsume)
The Doppel of mistaken steps. Its form is cutting.
The master of this emotion fears her Doppel, as it unreservedly swings its blade to chop up everything in sight-- even her precious books. Inwardly, though, she also feels a sense of release that she can't quite describe.
Unlike its ever-fearful master, the manifested Doppel chops with its guillotine without ever stopping to think. In addition to its target's physical body, it shreds any and all magical connections they have.
This Doppel can only attack physically from very close range, and sometimes slashes at its allies by mistake, so it tends to leave itself open to attack. But the master of this emotion cannot control it, and so can only remain frozen in fear.
DELANNA (Master: Meiyui Chun)
The Doppel of peaceful sleep. Its form is a towel.
The master of this emotion feels a sense of affection for this somehow-childish Doppel.
In contrast to its sharp-minded master, this Doppel has the mentality of a young child, and only wants to sleep peacefully. If its sleep is obstructed, it will go on a violent, thrashing rampage, as well as destroy its enemies' eardrums with its infant-like crying. Also, when this Doppel yawns, all living things around it-- be they enemy or ally-- will be set upon by extreme drowsiness, and it promises the most peaceful of slumber to those who its soft body snuggles up against.
KOVALEV (Master: Leila Ibuki)
The Doppel of variable temperature. Its form is a nose.
The master of this emotion doesn't know what she can prove her identity with, and has fallen into confusion upon realizing how ambiguous people's conceptions of each other can be.
Her Doppel can disguise itself as other people, and even force those around it to bow their heads in respect.
It gives nothing to others, and can even wound them or take their lives without them being able to lift a single finger in opposition to it. But if the hollow void underneath its robes is witnessed, it'll instantly lose its sense of self-worth and become powerless.
KHLESTAKOV (Master: Seika Kumi)
The Doppel of inversion. Its form is an inspector general.
The master of this emotion is embarrassed to know that her continued attempts to polish her comedic skills have led people to mistakenly assume that she has an eccentric personality.
In much the same way, this Doppel often frets over how to make itself known to those around it, as it has no true form hidden beneath its mask. But it doesn't mind being misunderstood if it benefits in the process, so it plays the role of an authority figure while stealing everything of worth from those around it. This includes lives and memories, on top of material goods.
If you were to chuckle back at the Doppel upon hearing its satisfied laughter, it would assume that you've figured out its ruse, and quickly hide.
AKAKIY (Master: Mito Aino)
The Doppel of inclusion. Its form is an overcoat.
The master of this emotion wishes to make her beautiful friendship into something that will last for eternity.
This Doppel answered her wish by compressing anything its body envelops, to the point where it becomes a single mass. The compressed material becomes quartz, and will shine for many thousands of years without ever being shattered.
When summoned, it attacks by pressing its master's emotions into quartz. However, if one continually relies on this power, even their memories will eventually turn to quartz, and they will be unable to form new ones.
NIKOLAI (Masters: Leila, Seika & Mito)
The Doppel of satire. Its form is relics.
By accepting their own human tendency towards continual change, and aspects of each others' personalities that had gone mutually unacknowledged, the masters of this emotion have strengthened their bonds even further than before.
Their Doppel refuses to acknowledge its masters, and continues to act on ceaseless impulse. It concentrates the darkness, deception, self-serving hypocrisy and vainglory in people's hearts, and attempts to plant these behaviours in the people around it.
It does so out of spite towards humans who hide their true natures, but upon being moved by the strength of its masters' bond, the Doppel exhausts all of its power and withers away, as if to make amends.
PAMELA (Master: Kokoro Awane)
The Doppel of restraint. Its form is a shell.
The master of this emotion perceives her Doppel as something that expresses her pent-up emotions in her stead; however, she understands that this behavior is merely a stopgap measure, so she has mixed feelings while looking upon it.
This Doppel sprouts sharp thorns in a show of resistance to those who would harm it, and savagely attacks that which it perceives to be dangerous.
On rare occasions, it may explode in conjunction with an upswing in its master's emotions. Its shell-- which boasts a powerful strength different from either ceramic or metal-- thus breaks, and powerful waves of magic engulf its surroundings.
POKER ALICE (Master: Yukika Nanase)
The Doppel of boredom. Its form is a daredevil.
The master of this emotion feels a great and terrible boredom towards her peaceful life, spent sitting atop an easy chair.
This Doppel imitates the form of an imaginary monster known as a "Dare-Devil," and constantly covers its master's eyes to prevent her from becoming aware of the danger in front of her.
The Doppel currently boasts an undefeated record in battle, and is beginning to feel the same dangerous boredom as its master at the fact that no enemy powerful enough to overwhelm it has yet appeared. As a result, it's been fighting more and more perilous battles by the day... but since her vision is obscured, its master still peacefully allows it to guard her back even as we speak.
HUND BALOU (Master: Hanna Sarasa)
The Doppel of refutation. Its form is a pet.
The master of this emotion learned how to control people using power that she borrowed from another. This eventually became a source of greed on her part, and manifested in this warped form.
It is a representation of her desire for revenge, rooted in the abuse she faced in her past-- and conversely, it is also an exaggerated projection of herself. She holds no sense of shame over it; only a pure and innocent madness.
This Doppel uses many leashes to restrain its opponents, and smashes them to pieces with its giant paws. It is also trembling in a constant state of excitement.
GELA (Master: Ayaka Mariko)
The Doppel of natural states. Its form is a bag of laughs.
The master of this emotion keeps her former, mild-mannered self hidden away in her heart.
Whenever this constantly-laughing Doppel encounters something inconvenient to it, it accumulates stress within its body. It then converts this stress into laughter, with which it blows away anything it doesn't want to see. Since it's constantly laughing no matter which direction it looks, its sources of stress must truly be myriad. Perhaps it's put in a bad mood by everything it sees.
If it were to decide that the entire world should be laughed to smithereens, it'd be quite dangerous, but its master sleeps peacefully inside the bag as if none of it has anything to do with her.
BONDBOMB (Master: Himika Mao)
The Doppel of dissolution. Its form is bonds.
This Doppel changes its master's ego into a sphere. The bonds and divides between her and her family become snakes tightly binding the sphere, which she forcibly attempts to keep in place. It wants to be free, but the snakes wrapped around it are also what allow it to maintain its spherical form. If it shook itself free, it would burst apart and disappear, but the master of this emotion will never allow that.
COLUMBINA (Master: Aimi Eri)
The Doppel of dueling. Its form is lead.
The master of this emotion feels sympathy between herself, unable to keep her affection shut within, and her Doppel, which holds burning-hot emotion inside of its leaden body.
Much like its master, this Doppel is unable to keep a lid on its affection. Moreover, its inability to behave honestly around its sweetheart leads to ever-more-complicated situations, which somehow leads to it declaring a decisive duel in order to express its love. Even more inconveniently, the tension of its love rises as it sees its sweetheart suffer, which ultimately causes it to roast its sweetheart with 6000-degree heat.
The Doppel thus believes itself to be body-meltingly sweet, on top of heart-meltingly.
OBARIYON (Master: Tsumugi Wakana)
The Doppel of unbalanced diets. Its form is a vacuum cleaner.
The master of this emotion is utterly exasperated by the vulgarity of her Doppel, which not only refuses to listen to her, but even snatches and inhales other people's food.
When this Doppel spots a being that it has good compatibility with, it'll ignore its master's orders and start absorbing that being's magic, and won't change its target until said being dies. Its stomach is downright bottomless, so it doesn't have to worry about any clichéd outcomes like inhaling so much that it explodes, but since it becomes heavier and heavier the more magic it stockpiles, it may sometimes squash its master flat.
RENATA (Master: Ren Isuzu)
The Doppel of electronic command. Its form is an ECG.
The master of this emotion fears her Doppel's power, which uses powerful electrical signals to burn away not just a target's evil intent, but their whole personality along with it. However, she is also troubled by this power's allure, as it may perhaps be the sole non-lethal method by which a human’s evil intent can be eradicated.
This Doppel also has power over life and death; when it appears, its master's mind temporarily separates from her body in an astral-projection state.
TAGORI (Master: Konoha Shizumi)
The Doppel of retribution. Its form is a fox.
The master of this emotion uses a variety of magical abilities to enact vengeance on those she bears resentment toward.
This Doppel is part of the kitsune-ken Doppel trinity, and represents retribution.
It is proficient in magic, and controls will-o'-wisps to bewitch its enemies. Even if placed underwater, the wisps will surely never vanish as long as their grudge fuels them.
During this Doppel's emergence, its master loses her ability to think rationally, acting purely on instinct and displaying a fearsome jumping ability.
TAGITSU (Master: Hazuki Yusa)
The Doppel of requital. Its form is a storehouse.
This Doppel represents requital. The master of this emotion never forgets the payback she is to enact on those who she resents.
This Doppel is part of the kitsune-ken Doppel trinity, and is proficient in protection and support.
During this Doppel's emergence, it fixes its master in place and uses her as a decoy. Any superhuman strength is like that of a mere infant before it. Should anyone thoughtlessly attempt to attack its master, it will capture them with its boulder-like palms and trap them inside its body, as well as occasionally forcing them to sign deeds that lock them into inconvenient contracts.
ICHIKISHIMA (Master: Ayame Mikuri)
The Doppel of forward charge. Its form is a trigger.
This Doppel represents forward charge. The master of this emotion charges headlong towards those she resents, with perfect accuracy.
This Doppel is part of the kitsune-ken Doppel trinity, is proficient in raw strength, and can flatten any magic that stands before it.
Once this Doppel's trigger is pulled, it will either strike its enemy dead-on, or tenaciously chase them around until its master's strength is exhausted. But because it becomes too perfectly concentrated on this task, it won't accept a second command even from its master, and gives absolutely no consideration to collateral damage. As such, caution is required when summoning it.
UKEI (Master: Konoha, Hazuki & Ayame)
The Doppel of sworn oaths. Its form is kitsune-ken.
The masters of this emotion had long acted as a makeshift family with restrictions placed on one another, but by accepting each other as individuals, they have now truly become one.
This Doppel is bound together within the rules of a three-way tie, like a polymer that can never break apart, and is proof that its masters' hearts are united as one. As such, it's not only stronger and sturdier than a boulder, but also boasts enough persistence and decisiveness to charge forward until its life burns out, and doesn't falter in the slightest even when acting purely on instinct.
This is likewise evident in how it wields swords of vast length. Though the swords may be heavy and their movements slow, somehow none are able to escape being crushed by them.
SELENE (Master: Masara Kagami)
The Doppel of bleakness. Its form is calm.
The master of this emotion doesn't have any particular feelings towards her Doppel.
This Doppel dramatically lowers the magical activity in its vicinity, transforming all magic energy into a state of perfect calm, no matter how fierce of a battle had been raging on around it. As long as they're within this calm zone, both enemy and ally will find it impossible to exert any kind of magical effect.
The Doppel and master's fused form appears to stem from its master's characteristic lack of emotional turbulence.
HEIDESOMMER (Master: Konomi Haruna)
The Doppel of greening. Its form is humus.
The master of this emotion is under the impression that her Doppel uses a good power for the sake of spreading greenery.
The Doppel's body is composed of soil, and contains enzymes capable of decomposing any and all organisms. Those who touch it will rot away and entirely decompose, becoming nutrients to make the land abundant and fertile.
The black, downy fluff that it launches by swaying its body will also cling to those it touches; should one touch it, they'll be devoured in an instant by fast-growing roots and transformed into a plant.
BELLA DONNA (Master: Rika Ayano)
The Doppel of exposure. Its form is truth serum.
After learning the reality of how easily people's hearts can change, the master of this emotion struggles with self-directed disgust at her own distrust towards others. With these feelings of its master's in mind, her Doppel refuses to forgive others' duplicity, and urges them to honestly speak their true thoughts to anyone and everyone.
It initially appears to be a beautiful seashell, but if someone rejects its admonitions or sees through to its interior, it will instead attempt to terrify them into honesty. If even this should fail, it will attempt to administer truth serum, but because its syringes are too large to do anything but fatally stab their targets, it hasn't succeeded even once.
NAOMI (Master: Mayu Kozue)
The Doppel of favoritism. Its form is a nadeshiko.
The master of this emotion is bewildered by this Doppel's ability to deceive opponents and take control of their hearts, and is troubled by its nature as a representation of herself.
All those whose garment hems are pulled by this Doppel will find themselves deeply compelled to love it. It can compel men in particular to absolute servitude, and to a level of self-sacrificing devotion that fears not even death. Even if its target is a woman, she will surely find it difficult to raise her hand against something so beauteous.
However, should one overuse this power to create throngs of blindly-devoted followers, ruin shall inevitably fall upon them.
GANNISHIKUDOKU (Master: Sayuki Fumino)
The Doppel of duty. Its form is a shortsword.
The master of this emotion is convinced that the excessive expectations and envy directed at her by others-- that giant mass of selfish affection-- are solely her responsibility to take on. This Doppel exists so that, when its master's heart eventually becomes too worn-down to fulfill that obligation, it can assist her with her one final task.
All of this Doppel's power fundamentally exists for its master's sake alone, but because of its merciful disposition, it also selects one lucky companion to receive the privilege of departing alongside its master. It's very mistake-prone, and tends to accidentally send off only the companion, but that just adds to its charm.
(This space reserved for Moka Megumi.)
YUERAO (Master: Riko Chiaki)
The Doppel of thread-reeling. Its form is a moonlit matchmaker.
The master of this emotion has yet to admit that this Doppel is still lurking within her heart.
This Doppel spreads a thick sheet of ice at its master's feet, and appears within the ice. When it attacks, it can also emerge above the ice by switching places with its master, but this traps its master within the ice in exchange.
Above the ice, the Doppel reels in and steals every thread of fate it can find. By collecting a thread that its master once tied together in the past, it seeks to return her situation to how it was before. Nevertheless, severing a joined thread after the fact will only bury those who it united deep under the ice.
Each time this Doppel is used, the feelings that its master had already given up on will resurface in her heart.
(This space reserved for Maria Yuki.)
ETTEILLA (Master: Mel Anna)
The Doppel of disclosure. Its form is a fortune teller.
The master of this emotion is both client and contractor. She believes her Doppel, which predicts one's destiny in perfect clarity, to be her true inner power, and she does not deny any of the destinies it predicts.
This Doppel is connected to its master's wrist and back, and constantly measures her pulse in order to synchronize with it. By fully synchronizing their movements and senses, the two of them can predict an utterly unshakable destiny. The result of the prediction is displayed in the Doppel's eye, and is determined by the type and direction of the tarot card shown within its pupil.
Barring a truly extraordinary effort, it's impossible for the master and Doppel to escape from a destiny they've predicted.
TABURATSU (Master: Mikura Komachi)
The Doppel of interment. Its form is grave goods.
The master of this emotion feels no small sense of relief towards her Doppel, which can bury not just physical material, but also emotions, memories and even concepts.
This Doppel appears from within the earth, secures a position for itself with its haniwa-shaped beacons, then pours down a massive amount of sediment to create a kofun on that position. Those who touch the kofun's soil will have something of theirs entombed and lost, though not necessarily something tangible.
This is an act of good will on the Doppel's part, and everything it does is for its master's sake. However, it's unclear as to whether or not this emotion's master is aware of that.
(This space reserved for Seira Mihono, Temari Kira, Hotori and Rion Yuzuki, and Meguru Hibiki.)
PAPARAZZO (Master: Ryou Midori)
The Doppel of gossip. Its form is a TLR camera.
The master of this emotion continually sought the truth in accordance with her desires. Her Doppel likewise responds to those desires in extreme excess, able to expose an opponent's truth simply by photographing them in full.
Any truth that this Doppel unveils can never be forgotten. This applies to both the subject and the photographer that are fixed within the gaze of the Doppel's twin lenses, with the unveiled truth being burned into both of their memories: an equal amount of anger if it finds anger, or an equal amount of sorrow if it finds sorrow.
Should this Doppel's master continue to use it, she will become unable to open her heart to anyone without first using the Doppel's ability to expose everything about them.
(This space reserved for Hotaru Yura.)
GIBDAUGHTER (Master: Kanae Yukino)
The Doppel of resonance. Its form is a hummingbird.
The master of this emotion thinks the acoustics of her Doppel's body aren't half bad.
This Doppel can use the reverberations from its singing to destroy any solid object, no matter what material it's made of.
Even against living creatures, its song could shake an enemy's brain, and with its precise movement and supersonically-vibrating beak, it can pierce targets straight through the heart.
ZIPZAP (Master: Ashley Taylor)
(Since Ashley originally made her debut on the North American server, her Doppel entry has had an official translation from the start! Here’s the slightly-wordier JP version, for completion’s sake.)
The Doppel of faith. Its form is kawaii.
The master of this emotion deeply immerses herself in Kawaii culture, and feels the utmost pleasure in broadcasting it to others. As such, she gazes at this image of herself with an expression of pure delight.
This Doppel fully understands its master's interests and her desire to spread information, so it strives to brainwash and implant others with a fondness for similar things-- from pop culture such as manga and anime, to even subcultures like yumekawa and gurokawa. If it encounters someone with a lower Kawaii level than its master, it fires rainbow beams at them from its six eyes. Anyone hit by the beams will be enveloped in a plethora of ribbons and lace, altering their hobbies and tastes. It's said that the sight of this Doppel prompts them to bow their heads to the ground in worship.
SYLVIE (Master: Ikumi Makino)
The Doppel of attention-gathering. Its form is a wind-up doll.
Although only to a very slight degree, the master of this emotion has unfortunately equated her pursuit of other people's smiles with the value that other people see in her.
Her Doppel crashes its cymbals together wildly, and launches anchors towards the eyes of anyone whose attention is captured by their sound. The anchors will pursue those cursed by the sound, no matter how far, and are sure to steal their eyeballs from them.
Should this Doppel's master continue to use it, she will come to feel anxious unless someone is always watching her.
RUKH (Master: Sae Kirino)
The Doppel of social climbing. Its form is a pawn.
The master of this emotion watches her Doppel break through its shell to reinvent itself, and sees her own future within it.
Her Doppel is proud of itself for obtaining power without relying on anyone else, and perhaps as a result of this self-confidence, it utterly refuses to accept advice or counsel from any other. This applies to its master as well: it may be cooperative towards her when their opinions happen to align, but it will staunchly refuse to nod its head after even a single irritation.
It also behaves mercilessly towards everyone other than its master-- even if they may be weak, helpless beings like its former self-- and will use its blazing-hot staves to skewer all who disagree with it. As its master watches this, she views it as a show of false bravado, borne out of its fear at the memory of how weak it was in the past.
GRIM (Master: Rui Mizuki)
The Doppel of blindness. Its form is a third eye.
The master of this emotion feels both joy at the manifestation of her hidden self, and a sense of release at the fact that she no longer needs to feign who she truly is.
This Doppel will never hide nor mask itself; it bares its natural state for all the world, and will not forgive even a single word of intervention from others. Those who deny it will be roasted in pitch-dark hellfire by its opened eyes, and carved to pieces by its sword plummeting from the sky.
It seems that this is actually meant to prevent anyone from dissuading its master, who's particularly concerned about the way others view her, but the master herself is completely unaware of this. She simply becomes drunk with delight at the sight of it crushing her enemies.
MARY (Master: Akari Mai)
The Doppel of regression. Its form is an amusement park.
The master of this emotion thinks of it as a place where she can return to the mindset of a child, with nobody around to watch her as she does so.
This Doppel has the power to draw out the childlike wonder that sleeps deep within a person's heart. Those who it touches will become able to enjoy even childish pastimes, and be released from any and all stress.
However, those who play with it and become its captive will begin to perceive the Doppel's mouth as the entrance to paradise, and anyone who sets foot inside can never find their way back out.
But it still has a maximum park capacity, so if too many people wander into its mouth, it's said that the Doppel will sometimes spit them back out from the strain.
HEPIALIDAE (Master: Kushu Irina)
The Doppel of salivation. Its form is a moth.
The master of this emotion floats through dreams between sleeping and waking, yet continues to seek the light of the sun.
This Doppel's circular form symbolizes the very same sun that its master seeks, and it floats through the air in the hopes of brightly illuminating its vicinity.
But despite scattering powder from its wings to illuminate its surroundings, each mote of dust only emits the faint light of a distant star, and cannot emit anything stronger than that.
The unsatisfied Doppel attempts to make the powder shine brighter by firing its own rays of light, but the erratically-reflected light builds up excess energy, explodes, and catches its surroundings in the blast.
Yet the Doppel is satisfied to see such a bright light, even if only for a brief instant.
MORFINE (Master: Yuu)
The Doppel of madness. Its form is a unicorn.
The master of this emotion is proud of herself for continually vanquishing evildoers, and also quite forgetful. As such, every time she summons her Doppel, it feels like both a fresh exerience and a personal reward.
Her Doppel's sleek and pure body is in conflict with the curses that it harbors under its flesh. Their influence renders the Doppel unconscious from the moment it's born, as the curses spill forth in rivulets from its mouth and eyes.
When the Doppel awakens from the sharp pain of its master's careless treatment of it, it roars and scatters curses all around, and the curses melt holes into those who touch them.
The master's voice can allegedly be heard from inside the Doppel, as she nonchalantly remarks on what's left of her adversaries.
KELOID (Master: Shii)
The Doppel of scars. Its form is claws.
The master of this emotion led someone to shoulder grave sin, and attempted to wash that sin away with love. But she found only a hollow void within that someone, and went on to empty out her own heart as well.
This Doppel is deeply linked with its master's empty heart, and has merged with her by mutually sharing their pain. Since its master remains conscious, but has no will to take action, the Doppel also takes initiative in her stead.
With no limits on its actions, the Doppel continually absorbs both the impurity of its master's wounds and the impurity shouldered by others, intending to take retribution against every bit of it. The Doppel emits memories of these wounds, and those who receive them will gradually break down mentally, rather than physically.
Magia Record - Doppel encyclopedia translations (Arc 1)
Since my original witch encyclopedia post has become very long, I’ve decided to split up the Doppels into their own dedicated posts. This is the post for Arc 1′s main cast.
-Doppels for OG series and spinoff characters
-Doppels for the majority of the supporting cast
-Doppels for characters related to Arc 2
-Enemy encyclopedia for Arc 2
-Enemies & Doppels for post-Arc 2
(note: spoilers for all of Arc 1, as usual!)
A Doppel Witch is a partial manifestation of a Puella Magi’s witch form. They appear exclusively in Kamihama City, where they can be summoned once their respective Puella Magi’s Soul Gem has reached critical levels of impurity. Summoning a Doppel will vent all the impurity out of the Gem, leaving it completely clean afterward. (Though not outright stated in the story, notes from Gekidan Inu Curry’s design documents at the 2018 Shaft art exhibit mention that overuse of one’s Doppel does have emotional side effects.)
The cause of the Doppel phenomenon is unknown, but the Wings of Magius are most likely involved. They plan to liberate all Puella Magi in the world by expanding the phenomenon worldwide, via the maturation of something called “Embryo Eve.”
*Interesting tidbit: a Doppel’s keywords (“Doppel of X, form is Y”) are usually the inverse of its respective witch (“witch of Y, nature is X”).
GIOVANNA (Master: Iroha Tamaki)
The Doppel of silence. Its form is a calling bird.
The master of this emotion is aware of her Doppel’s pitiful form, but is unable to view it directly.
This Doppel speaks of nothing; it wraps everything that it doesn’t want to hear in cloth, and squeezes it to pieces. It is forever searching for something that can fill the empty hole in its chest.
Despite how desperately it needed to call out for someone, this cowardly Doppel is afraid to take a direct look at the reality that it hid away with cloth, and its ears remain covered in silence.
GIOVANNA (Master: Iroha Tamaki (swimsuit ver.))
The Doppel of silence. Its form is a calling bird.
While still searching for her lost sister, the master of this emotion is also slowly progressing on her journey to accept herself.
Combined with how her heart has leapt in the glow of the summer sun, her Doppel has thus taken on a somewhat frivolous appearance. One can see how the Doppel’s robes and mast have been affected by her mood; really, one may even go so far as to say it’s being heavily swayed by its master’s spur-of-the-moment emotional state. A surface-level change, in short.
Though it’s specialized for ocean battles, its master herself can’t swim, preventing it from making particularly nimble movements. It simply attempts to slay the enemies before it with an intense attack, using all the power it has available.
GIOVANNA (Master: Iroha Tamaki (Anime ver.))
CAMPANELLA (Master: Yachiyo Nanami)
The Doppel of ticket-taking. Its form is a ticket puncher.
The master of this emotion dreams of the day when she, too, will depart on a journey, following in the footsteps of the friends whose departures she has already seen off.
This Doppel can summon various illusions with the light of the lantern hanging from its tail, and those injured by its tail’s pincer are said to be guaranteed great misfortune in the near future.
Because the range of emotional fluctuation is reduced in older individuals and in those who have lived as Puella Magi for a long time, those individuals’ Doppels may fail to completely separate from the master’s body, as is the case here.
The Doppel of ticket-taking. Its form is a ticket puncher.
The master of this emotion stands on the bank of the Heavenly River, unable to cross it until her life runs out, and gazes across to see the shadows of friends whose departures she once saw off.
Her Doppel, believing itself to have received the role of a Tanabata magpie, attempts to help its master as she searches for her old friends' visages. It uses the lantern on its tail to illuminate the starry river, projecting it in vivid detail.
But because this Doppel lacks the power to actually aid in their reunion, it can only fly to and fro through the heavens while holding on to a wish that's impossible to grant.
The Doppel of ticket-taking. Its form is a ticket puncher.
By accepting the fictional character she once performed as a part of herself, the master of this emotion has come to avert her eyes from the wishes that well up in her heart, continually freezing them in order to remain a strong and stalwart figure.
As the only one to have realized this, her Doppel attempts to reduce its master's burden by spraying chilly air at everyone around her. It hopes to force them to stand up and face hardship by doing so, but it can't possibly match the speed at which its master freezes her heart.
CAMPANELLA (Master: Yachiyo Nanami (Anime ver.))
The Doppel of ticket-taking. Its form is a ticket puncher.
The master of this emotion dreams of the day when she, too, will depart on a journey, following in the footsteps of the friends whose departures she has already seen off, and has long awaited the moment when her ticket will finally be punched.
Those who are injured by the pincer on the end of this Doppel's tail are apparently guaranteed great misfortune in the near future. Its master often attempts to point the pincer towards herself, but has never succeeded in doing so.
Because the range of emotional fluctuation is reduced in older individuals and in those who have lived as Puella Magi for a long time, those individuals’ Doppels may fail to completely separate from the master’s body, as is the case here.
YU HONG (Master: Tsuruno Yui)
The Doppel of domestic harmony. Its form is Jinhua ham.
The master of this emotion is quite dissatisfied with her Doppel's appearance.
Its character, too, is another source of distrust for her. In contrast to its master's desire to achieve great success through her own efforts, this Doppel simply produces endless wealth to satisfy the greed of its master's relatives, attempting to protect what is only a temporary family harmony.
This Doppel's master considers it to be in total opposition to her noble goal, and would rather not have anybody find out about its vulgar appearance. However, to protect her family's harmony-- however temporary it may be-- she may very well find herself in need of this Doppel's power some day.
YU HONG (Master: Rumor Tsuruno)
The Doppel of domestic harmony. Its form is Jinhua ham.
“My, have you heard? Who’d you hear it from?
The Doppel of Harmony, and the rumor thereof!
It’s a cute widdle piggy that got as big as a balloon, and grants every desire of its master’s relatives!
Its luxurious, sparkling body is a symbol of great wealth, protecting its family’s harmony day in and day out!
But its master’s far from thrilled about it. She’s totally grumpy about how it looks.
She’d rather keep this embarrassing thing far from anyone’s view.
It’s a rumor that EVERYONE in Kamihama is talking about!
Nooo, look awaaay!”
THERESIA (Master: Sana Futaba)
The Doppel of invisibility. Its form is an inquisition chair.
The master of this emotion is pained at the sight of its materialized form, but feels some sense of fulfillment as well.
This Doppel’s main body isn’t the chair, but rather an invisible form that sits above the chair in a continual state of torment. The invisible Doppel uses the blood flowing from itself to attack its enemies.
However, this Doppel also proves rather difficult to control. Apart from the invisible Doppel that’s normally created from its master’s left ear, a visible one may sometimes appear from her right ear instead. In these cases, the Doppel will make no distinction between enemy and ally, wildly swinging its pendulum guillotine in a violent, shrieking rampage.
BEATRICE (Master: Felicia Mitsuki)
The Doppel of mixture. Its form is an eyelid.
The master of this emotion falls into a deep sleep when this Doppel appears, and doesn’t lay eyes upon anything it learns.
While its master is asleep, her Doppel cries tears of mud from its vacant eye, covering up and re-painting everything inconvenient to her.
This Doppel is likely to awaken when its master requires the power to smash reality to pieces.
BEATRICE (Master: Felicia-chan)
The Doppel of mixture. Its form is butter.
The master of this emotion falls into a deep sleep when this Doppel appears, and doesn’t lay eyes upon any of the manufacturing methods that it learns.
While its master is asleep, her Doppel sprays cow’s milk from its vacant eye onto a bed of rock salt, and vigorously mixes it. The resulting butter adds a dash of saltiness and rich flavor to any dish, and pairs best with baked potato.
If you haven’t been having much luck making buttered potato at home, perhaps it’s because you’re using unsalted butter?
*(Also, the sign on it says “Do Not Disturb.”)
HEVELIUS (Master: Mifuyu Azusa)
The Doppel of livelihood. Its form is a bird-catcher.
Because the master of this emotion lives in reality, she'll take advantage of any power she can, including this physical-fusion-type Doppel.
It can summon countless bird-like minions called "Sugar Geese" from its own shadow on the ground, and attack enemies with them. Any target that the Sugar Geese collide with will feel a sweet-tasting sensation, and even a single taste of this flavor will bring symptoms of addiction with it.
Thanks to this trait, hitting an opponent with even a scant few geese can get them to permit a great deal of falsehoods.
Since the Doppel transforms from its master's tongue and arms, she can't talk while she has it active.
HEVELIUS (Master: Mifuyu Azusa (Fairytale ver.))
The Doppel of livelihood. Its form is a bird-catcher.
By accepting the fictional character she once performed as a part of herself, the master of this emotion has become convinced that she is a descendant of a tyrannical bloodline that brings destruction to those around her.
Her Doppel thus sets fire to itself and burns away all that it touches, in order to satisfy its master by bringing reality closer to that fiction.
However, burning away only reality is no easy feat. Once its flames have run their course, not even imagination remains.
OLD DOROTHY (Master: Alina Gray)
The Doppel of fever. Its form is a paint tube.
The master of this emotion is fascinated by her own Doppel's beauty, but she still doesn't know about its hidden true form.
The Doppel's actual body is behind its master's back. It oozes a paint called "Pathogen Tempera," which it then congeals and uses to form a massive false body with which to attack the opponent. Since its master's human body is buried in the paint and completely obscured from view, it boasts a presence that's more like a witch than a Doppel.
The master can't see what her Doppel looks like from the outside, but according to her, it looks beautiful from the inside too.
OLD DOROTHY (Master: Holy Alina)
The Doppel of fever. Its form is a piping bag.
The master of this emotion believes that the artwork she desires is also what humanity desires on a deep, unconscious level, and is gathering energy to make that artwork a reality.
Having realized that the beauty of personal emotional expression is the fundamental artistic motif of humanity, her resulting joy has also affected her Doppel's form. In addition to embodying her festive cheer, even the Pathogen Tempera it pipes out now shines in a wide range of colors.
That said, though, the pain and suffering that it gives and receives are exactly the same. The agonized screams of those it devours shall surely sound like beautiful hymns to its master's ears.
CENDRILLON (Master: Rena Minami)
The Doppel of transformation. Its form is a glass slipper.
The master of this emotion wields every last bit of its power for her own sake.
This Doppel multiplies its master’s transformation powers many times over. This allows her to temporarily change into not just another person, but that person’s ideal form, more realistic than the real thing. However, if she makes frequent use of this too-perfect transformation, she may eventually lose sight of her original self.
Also, since this Doppel changes its master into her ideal image of a given person, she may sometimes appear quite different from the original person in question.
CENDRILLON (Master: Rena-chan (idol ver.))
The Doppel of transformation. Its form is a flying kick.
The master of this emotion wields every last bit of its power for her own sake.
This Doppel multiplies its master’s kick strength many times over. This allows it to forcibly shove her deep into enemy territory, which will (hopefully) transform her into the battle’s victor. However, if she makes frequent use of this too-powerful kick, she may eventually lose her original skeletal structure.
Also, the bomb its master tosses is one of her own belongings.
*(Also also: the sign on it says “Return by Midnight.”)
ELFRIEDE (Master: Momoko Togame)
The Doppel of self-reproach. Its form is manicured nails.
The master of this emotion doesn’t seem to have much interest in where its power ends up leading to.
This Doppel attacks with its giant fingers, as well as the countless fingers flying around it. The fingernails that serve as its weapons are all finely painted and manicured, and the Doppel is excessively concerned with their upkeep. If praised, it will do a fine job, but if scorned, it will reproach itself and become extremely depressed. It’s a huge nuisance when this happens, so it’s best to have the Doppel attack quickly after summoning it.
ELFRIEDE (Master: Momoko Togame (sister ver.))
The Doppel of self-reproach. Its form is manicured nails.
The master of this emotion thinks that she needs to keep an eye on her Doppel so that it doesn't fly off somewhere, due to its excess of Halloween cheer.
This Doppel wants to show off its costume-adorned master to everyone, but since its master is constantly keeping an eye on it, it reproaches itself and tries to keep a low profile.
When its master is in trouble, it tries to use its colorful nails to hide and shelter her within its pumpkin, but since it gets distracted by all the Halloween commotion, none of its attempts have been very successful.
ZOLA (Master: Kaede Akino)
The Doppel of territory-taking. Its form is a plot of land.
The master of this emotion fears that her living space will be eroded by this Doppel, and makes sure to carefully choose when and where to summon it. This is because regardless of its master's intentions, the Doppel will cover its surroundings in rotting moss as soon as it appears, claim the area as its own territory, and thereafter seek only to expand said territory.
If it were summoned in the wrong place, even its master's most beloved places would be consumed by rotting moss, and would surely be unable to maintain their original form.
This Doppel can exercise absolutely tremendous power within the confines of its territory.
CATACOMBE (Master: Kanagi Izumi)
The Doppel of dismantlement. Its form is a soot lion.
In contrast to the calm shown by the master of this emotion, her Doppel takes the form of a lion that burns with inexhaustible rage, and bites everything to ribbons. It refuses to forgive even the slightest injustice, and dismantles any unfairness in sight.
Its personality is utterly relentless. In particular, simply being a Kamihama resident makes one a target for dismantlement, so its master must be cautious when summoning it to avoid harming her allies.
If she continues to use this Doppel, she will gradually become unable to forgive even the most minuscule inequality.
Its master finds its power hard to manage, but she half-agrees with the lion.
CATACOMBE (Master: Kanagi Izumi (vampire ver.))
The Doppel of dismantlement. Its form is a soot lion.
The master of this emotion continually wanders in search of the answer to her mourning.
In order to help its master find that answer, this Doppel takes the feelings towards death that are held by visitors lured in by Halloween merriment, and finely dismantles said feelings before serving them to its master. Breaking them down into small pieces makes them no easier to swallow, however, so its master is likely to get indigestion, and continue to distance herself from the answer.
When the Doppel tires of dismantlement, it secretly uses the tip of its scythe to carve jack-o'-lanterns and so forth outside of its master's view.
TOTENTANZ (Master: Mitama Yakumo)
The Doppel of memento mori. Its form is flower petals.
The master of this emotion attempts to bring ruin to everything, out of resentment for the environment in which she lives.
This Doppel does not forget death, which comes equally to all things in creation. It covers everything with fluttering petals, and gracefully comes to escort away girls with its white gloves. Both it and its master have no way to attack directly, but its power, which exists alongside the demise of all things, is fearsome nonetheless. All magical energy covered by its flowers will wither away, leaving nothing behind.
Should this Doppel's master continually seek its power, her left arm may eventually fuse with it completely.
The Doppel of memento mori. Its form is an auspicious day.
Despite resenting her environment, the master of this emotion is overjoyed by the fact that she can welcome in the new year with the friends that she has newly made. Her Doppel embodies that joy in the form of golden lilies and red-and-white curtains, and it expresses a warm welcome to those who draw near by enveloping them in the curtains and raining flower petals down upon them.
However, all are forbidden from returning home early when the time comes to serve the New Year's meals, and its guests shall suffer the agonizing taste of an eternal turn-of-the-century.
DUM (Master: Tsukuyo Amane)
The Doppel of isolation. Its form is a terrarium.
The master of this emotion, free from being bound by her own emotions or disposition, clings tightly to her other half as the one person who understands her.
By using this Doppel, the two of them isolate themselves from everything except each other, and none of the changes in this world can affect them. Within this tiny half-planet, they only have need for each other.
The use of this Doppel shuts out all physical phenomena and the passage of time, guaranteeing one's personal safety, but as a side effect, the memories of anyone other than the two of them will fade away.
DEE (Master: Tsukasa Amane)
The Doppel of disconnection. Its form is an aquarium.
The master of this emotion, free from being bound by her own environment or circumstances, drowns in affection for her other half as the one person who understands her.
By using this Doppel, the two of them cut themselves off from all connections except theirs. As long as they stay within this tiny half-planet, they each only believe in what the other can sense; outsiders will never get through to them, no matter how many opinions one expresses or how overbearing an attitude one takes.
The use of this Doppel shuts out the diverse values held by others, thereby stabilizing one's mind, but as a side effect, their hold on society's ethics will dwindle as well.
DUM DEE (Master: Amane Sisters (swimsuit ver.))
The Doppel of insulation and disconnection. Its form is a herbarium.
In the end, having chosen to forget about all of the darkness that each of them holds, the masters of this emotion now spend their time dreamily playing in their own tropical resort.
This Doppel normally refines moonlight into magic power, but with its masters' hearts now captivated by the sun, it instead refines sunlight into power, and leaps to and fro in the cheerful summer air.
But don't be fooled! Its power leaps right over "troublesome," and straight into "horrific disaster." All those who touch it will be erased, transforming its surroundings into a pandemonic hell on Earth. Additionally, this Doppel is completely incapable of sensing its surroundings, so its heart will remain unmoved no matter how bitterly one screams at it.
????? (Master: White (+ Black?) Feather)
A placeholder Doppel for the generic White Feather enemies (Dark-type pictured). This particular one stands in for Ikumi Makino and her Doppel during her appearance as a Feather in Chapter 9. Not available for player use at this time.
ICHIZO (Master: Kuroe)
The Doppel of escape. Its form is a nighthawk.
Though the master of this emotion lamented her past and stopped in place once already, she has now found a light to follow, and doesn't stop trying to spread her wings and fly.
As her Doppel continually sheds tears, it attempts to put its master at ease by limiting her movements with wings of heavy mud. It denies her attempts to both seek and soar in the sky, while constantly emphasizing the exact opposite path to her. Though it utilizes its wings to attack those who oppose its master, each and every swing is meant to indicate to its master that she can never reach the light, no matter what she does.
After being completely eaten away by this Doppel, the only choice one has is to become a black star that stands motionless on the Earth's surface.
ICHIZO (Master: Kuroe (swimsuit ver.))
The Doppel of escape. Its form is a nighthawk.
The master of this emotion runs to and fro, continually searching for a "fun summer vacation" that's fitting for her.
Her ever-indecisive state of mind takes shape as this Doppel, with many fresh fruits incorporated into its form.
In much the same way that the void in its master's heart remains unfilled by any of the summers she experiences, the incongruous residue of those countless summers floats within the Doppel. Their sugar content skyrockets in correspondence with how much she was looking forward to them.
The frankly-exhausted Doppel tearfully attempts to convince its master to give up on finding a fun summer, but if she still insists on continuing her search, it's considering teaching her a helpful lesson about her limitations by drowning her with its oceanic wings.
PENNEN NOLDE (Master: Touka Satomi)
The Doppel of daydreams. Its form is a match-seller.
Even after becoming a Puella Magi, the master of this emotion desires yet more power, with which to accomplish yet greater wishes.
This Doppel carries matches cut from its master's lifespan, and it's said that by striking and lighting these matches, it can grant any "what-if" imaginable. The number of remaining matches is tied to its master's lifespan, and using them all up will mean the end of her life.
It's a very strong Doppel, but because it sacrifices its master's lifespan in much the same way as the Doppel of Last Testament, overuse of it is forbidden.
PENNEN NENEMU (Master: Nemu Hiiragi)
The Doppel of last testament. Its form is a deathwatch beetle.
The master of this emotion offers up every remaining bit of her life.
This Doppel can devour stories with the insect heads on both of its hands, then physically manifest said stories in this world. The absolutely ridiculous range of this power makes it a Doppel to truly be feared.
The source of this Doppel's power is its master's already-short lifespan, and its power is said to grow stronger as its master's lifespan dwindles.
However, since all of its power is directed towards the story-manifesting ability, it lacks direct offensive capabilities, and could hardly last a second if attacked by a witch.
And finally, after the conclusion of Arc 1...
SHITORI EGUMO (Master: Ui Tamaki)
The Doppel of suffering. Its form is a happy statue.
The master of this emotion shares all pain suffered by the ones she loves, and takes it unto herself as her own. The pain is then changed into gemstones, and the Doppel’s power increases in tandem with the number of gemstones adorning it.
However, it cannot move, and therefore cannot evade any attacks. It carries a sword and shield, but they are purely decorative, and are no use as weapons.
She can turn into a kite!! Tragically she has no actual encyclopedia entry. Oh well
*Extra section: witches who’ve only received anime profiles thus far. (Neo Dorothy has appeared as a special event boss, and has files for her in-game encyclopedia entry, but AFAIK the entry hasn’t been implemented yet.)
ICHIZO
“The witch of nighthawks. Her nature is to escape.
An ugly hawk with wings of mud.”
NEO DOROTHY / Alina Eve (*nickname)
“The form Alina Gray took after allowing her Doppel of Fever to devour her, while simultaneously taking over Embryo Eve's body via its infection. Even in this state, she's able to instantly spread the Doppel of Fever to about several dozen thousand people, thereby transforming them into artificial Magical Girls.
Artificial Magical Girls become able to use magic regardless of age or gender, but much like the original Magical Girls, they must purify themselves with Grief Seeds to avoid being taken over by the Doppel of Fever and turning into witches.
At a glance, it may seem like they're being forced to bear the fate of Magical Girls without even a wish as collateral, but according to Alina, "humanity's prosperity itself is the collateral," "being granted magic-- a power that's completely independent of physical ability or social standing-- is also collateral," "in the first place this is Art so there doesn't even really need to be collateral," and "free-of-charge magic distribution is GOD".
Originally, Touka and Nemu were intending to complete their concept of the Doppel System by making Embryo Eve absorb the two of them, in addition to Walpurgisnacht.”
