Laughing with Stapleton here. I'm an avid hiker, I know the brightest shades of moss mean BOG ALARM! Not that there's actual danger in bogs, and they do have their own beauty, but they are rather slow and tiresome to cross as you try to keep onto the sturdier vegatation and avoid deep spots, and it's hard to maintain your balance sometimes when you sink in farther than you thought you would. Luckily you quickly learn how to navigate that kind of terrain and I've managed to never fall so far, but I remember one winter in the Lake District where I suddenly sank down to my knee with one leg and had to quickly grab onto a small birch to avoid falling on my face. The icy yet clear water of a river was very welcome to wash the mud off later. I assume that Stapleton is referring to people dying as a result of being thrown off their horses? I hope Doyle is not perpetuating the myth of people drowning in bogs here
