Well, I am off to Korea tomorrow! So here’s a look at the score for the Korean modern classic “Oldboy”. Although Roque Banos’ score for the recent US remake failed in many regards, the score for the original film by Chan-wook Park is whole other story. Composer Yeong-wook Jo takes on the tragic revenge tale by using a small ensemble orchestra (due to budget restraints), synths and minimalistic electronic elements to full effect. The result is magnificent as Jo strings together a dark waltz melody throughout the score and a trumpet theme to highlight the main character’s descent into madness. Highlights include “Look Who’s Talking”, “In A Lonely Place”, “The Searchers”, “Breathless” and “The Last Waltz”. A score that warrants repeated listens after watching the film due to its close relationship with Chan-wook Park’s spectacular direction - 9/10.
