Tip 213: TELL THEM WHAT YOU’RE GOING TO TELL THEM. One of the most common filmmaking rules is “Show, don’t tell.” But as with all rules, breaking this one can be useful. You can win—or lose—viewers in the first few seconds of your movie. That’s why you need a hook, something that grabs people and makes them want to keep watching. While this can be done with a big action sequence (think of the openings of James Bond movies), it can also be done with a few well-chosen words. The example here is from a Home Stream mini-doc about an English woman who lives on the street. While the 10-minute movie has many powerful images, the text screen with just two short sentences is riveting. It also tells viewers what to expect and it focuses their attention on the core concept. This technique can work with a variety of genres, for example, as the hook to a travelogue, a music video, an instructional video, or a vlog. Tutorial Review: SHOOTING A MINI-DOC The mini-doc rests on the truth that every single person is worth getting to know. In practice this means that if you want to make mobile movies, there are plenty of subjects in your world. If you’ve never shot a mini-doc and want some basic tips, check out Bud Simpson’s “Tutorial One.” In 6 minutes, he covers sound, gear, lighting, and cinematography—using illustrations from his mini-doc “The Artist.” The presentation is clear and encouraging. While Simpson (@citizendocs) produced his tutorial in the old days (2015) using an iPhone 5, most of the advice remains valid and valuable.
