Show Crush: HO-AG, Battle House, Jordan, Mind Yeti @ OāBrienās
A wise man once said something like ānothing endures but change,ā or perhaps it was āthe only constant is change,ā or even more dramatically, āchange alone is unchangingā (hmm, I like that one the best.) Anyhow, you get the idea. When talking about bands and band members, things are always changing ā priorities, commitments, focus, dedication and interest. Especially in Boston, a land of constant change, few things involving bands stay the same for very long. In the case of the bandĀ Ho-Ag, itās been pointed out that there have been more ex-members (5) than current members (4) over the course of their years (7) andĀ various releasesĀ (7.5-ish?). However, each iteration of the band has managed to refine whatās at the core of itself even further while avoiding setbacks when adding, losing or reconfiguring roles. Still at the heart of the music is a nearly out-of-control breakneck freneticism that pumps hot blood into every song, and itās been exciting to watch every Ho-Ag-Er, past and present, try to keep up with the pace set by the bandās catalog of songs.
Tonight atĀ OāBrienāsĀ is the first Ho-Ag show in some 4 months, so itās probably been long enough for something else to change. Yet Iām going to go out on a limb and say itās safe to expect that once itās over, tonightās set will still have a) chanelled the darkness of The Birthday Party; b) exhibited the bizzare impulsiveness of Devo; c) gotten downright toxic like Braniac; d) made some old fans very happy; e) made some new fans drool; and f) raised the bar for what being a fixture-band in Boston is all about. WithĀ Battle House,Mind YetiĀ and Jordan (from France!). $8 ā 21+ 9:00pm.
