Lead Belly's Gold by Eric Bibb & Jean-Jacques Milteau I usually enjoy Jean-Jacques Milteau work: modern harmonica players that have managed to develop their own vocabulary playing blues are few and far between. I only knew Eric Bibb by name, but I nonetheless expected to enjoy this record. Unfortunately, it didn’t work for me. I think it’s more the original material that doesn’t suit me. I never really appreciated country / folk blues, it’s not raw enough to my ears. Not a criticism of the genre, just not the genre for me. So despite the good quality of the playing and singing here, these are still Leadbelly songs, and they’re not my bag.

When I first discovered JJ Milteau, this was the band he was playing with (dms - Ponthieux, elb - Vernerey, p - d'Angelo, g - Galvin). It's a lot less distinctive than the music he plays now, but there's something exhilarating about that combo, still today. For the Milteau afficionados, note the full quotation of his own Boogie Mix during his solo and the segue into Orange Blossom Special, both staples of the era...
