When you go caving, you carry your lights with you through a system made up almost entirely of darkness. In reality, the natural state of a cave is so dark that absolutely nothing can be seen. But when you go caving, you rarely ever see this, because wherever you look all you know is the light you bring with you.
If he was forced to, Jack would admit he thinks knowing Gus and the others is like this: like he's been lost in the passages for years and someone has finally handed him a light.

Well, no, I mean- it wasn't deliberate. I didn't plan there to be any kind of gay element in the story but someway through the first draft I realised [...] that I needed there to be more emotional punch to the ending of the story. [...] And the answer came to me very quickly and I realised then that it was already in the story, that there was already a gay element, I just hadn't quite realised it. And so I think because I hadn't planned it, it meant I wasn't really thinking about, 'Oh, how am I going to play this?' and 'How am I going to avoid stereotypes?'; I was just thinking about these two characters and how it was going to affect them. And so perhaps that's how it became- it felt more natural, and it was a very easy thing to bring out, because it was already there.
