Itās truly wild being an Atheist Jew because you can 100% not believe in god or any of the stories of the Torah, and can actively have a sense of humor about the whole thing, yet still be totally invested in your identity and community. Like I have a purely science-based worldview, but that doesnāt mean I canāt participate in community service, work with kids at my temple, learn about Jewish history and rituals, practice traditions with family, and enact Jewish values in the activism I practice. Itās an inescapable identity, and the world is saturated in religious influence on everything from politics to literature, so I may as well be knowledgeable about my context in the world. On a very sober note, as my mom once told my brother when he was turning away from religion, āJust remember that when the Nazis come to take you away, they wonāt care if you do or donāt go to temple. You were born a Jew, and to most people, thatās all that matters.ā
And then itās time to date, and itās like every dude that comes along who isnāt just knees-deep in Jesus-hood always love to boast: āHahaha I ironically shit on ALL religion because Iām so original and enlightened.ā Like yo Derek, just because you didnāt like wearing a tie to Easter services as a kid and have come to the revolutionary realization that Bad Stuff has been done in the name of religion doesnāt mean that nobody else can have a healthy relationship with their religious or ethnic communities. Remaining willfully ignorant of othersā cultures and the much deeper social/economic/political systems at play in instances of oppression doesnāt make you morally superior or more Logicalā¢ļø. Congrats on practicing the same ethnocentrism you were trying to avoid in throwing off your religious roots.
Imagine having a really hot hookup with someone only to find out that they call instead of text
Adventures in Dating 22: Interception.
Adventures in Dating 22: At her second attempt at speed dating, Ella makes an interception...
Remember when I went speeding dating by playing Cards Against Humanity? How could you forget, especially when the wildest thing EVER happened to me after? Well, I thought to cleanse myself after that, ahem, unique experience, I should try out traditional speed dating. Before I go on, I should disclose that this event was gifted, because apparently you can get fined if you donāt. All opinions are,ā¦

Fear of Flying
I detest LA. The smell when the air hits is so distinct and familiar ā similar to something you once ate that made you violently ill. Itās an involuntary reaction on a cellular level that I have to this place. And I say āthis placeā because I am in LA right now; in a corporate hotel near enough to the airport to enviously hear the planes taking off.
Sure. Maybe Iām scarred. It is, after all, where someone I cared deeply for came and lost himself. At least thatās how I saw things from Pennsylvania. It was also where I spent the brokest summer of my life right after college; where I dinged my rental car and had my heart broken (again); where Iāve always felt lonely.
Itās a tough place to find your niche ā your people. Not a place for wanderers. Not a place for ones without an agenda. And even after having spent so much time here, I can never figure out where the fuck I am in relation to any other place Iāve been.
LA is just not my scene. And Iāve tried. I stayed in an Airbnb in Venice for a week that almost made me entertain the idea of a West Coast life. I will admit that I think the ramen is better here than in New York. And being near the ocean is...being near the ocean. Epic and indulgent. Ā
I came out for a work trip in the middle of the week. We had just spent the previous weekend in Philadelphia for the Thanksgiving holiday and to attend the wedding of someone my boyfriend had gone to summer camp with. Two nights in my own bed later and it was off to the LA. I left on a Wednesday and he was to come out that Thursday morning. The annoying thing was... as soon as a I took off in a car to head for the airport I started to miss him. And as I navigated my way from LAX the short distance to the hotel I was burdened with a longing that he were just out here already.
We spend so much time together in a way I feel off balance without him. Itās an odd effect that generally only lasts the first day or so of being apart. But it creeps up in the side of my mind, like I forgot something but Iām not sure what.
My first instinct is to really not like that, to not like that feeling of being a part of a whole. Because Iāve always advocated for completing yourself; of belonging to no one but yourself. And itās hard for me to understand how you can participate in a partnership without sacrificing some deep and sacred part of yourself. And itās disorienting to understand how I could be a person who really would prefer to Ā spend most of her time with one single individual.
For so long I had this fear of the āshared identityā ā of being in a relationship where the āgirlfriendā version of myself was not exactly aligned with the just-plain-old-me version of myself. I feared there was an expected way to act as a girlfriend and an expected way treat another person as a girlfriend. That all of a sudden because you were in this committed thing you had certain expectations placed on you, and that The Relationship required the fulfillment of some specific curriculum in order to be successful. Ā
I feared having someone out there in the world on whom my behavior reflected, who was associated with me and everything that came with it. And that once the cat-and-mouse chase of early infatuation wore thin, it would be revealed I was just a flesh and blood human being, maybe nothing dramatically special at the end of the day.
I guess in large part this fear boiled down to inexperience. I only knew how to be an individual, of how to blatantly disregard what anyone thought of me. I didnāt want a shared identity where I was viewed as a reflection or extension of anyone.Ā
My tarot card readers really dug into my relationships ā past and present ā during my last reading. It had been almost three years since I had last seen them, and needless to say a lot was different. I went into the session with the intention to talk about work, and careers, and my future, since thatās what had been on my mind. But the conversation eventually turned towards relationships. I got them up to speed and introduced them to key information regarding my current boyfriend.
They are⦠unorthodox, to say the least, when it comes to relationships. Although, I find their point of view to be true to the authentic nature of human beings. They believe soul mates are those who come into your life for a certain period of time because on a cosmic level you have been drawn to each other. Sometimes that connection lasts a lifetime, sometimes it doesnāt. They believe āmarriageā is an identity that carries with it itās own expectations and demands ā separate and apart from any of the couples who enter into it ā and for that reason to be wary of rushing into one. And they believe that relationships should serve, at the end of the day, the two individuals in them.
That is to say⦠your relationship should help you develop as an individual, should assist you on your personal aims, should enhance you as a person first and foremost. The primary purpose of a partnership is to further elevate the participants. Period.
Being yourself in a relationship and accepting the other person for who they are are really your only options. I realize this now. There is no changing another person, not even if in your heart you believe itās for the better. And thereās no changing yourself, thereās no performing a version of yourself you think you should be.
Iāve begun to understand that the thing Iāve feared most ā feeding this third and invisible entity called The Relationship ā isnāt the gold standard of modern dating. Being in a healthy, committed relationship doesnāt mean sacrificing parts of yourself to satisfy some unnamed whole. Itās about honoring the relationship by being exactly who you are. Of expecting your relationship to be the primary place where you can be yourself. Where who you are is embraced and respected and fulfilled and encouraged.Ā
And, not to gush, but I am in just this type of relationship. Once I calm the jitters it becomes clear that I donāt have anything to worry about. So long as I stay true to myself. And never move to LA.Ā Ā

Do I hate myself enough to try and hookup with this guy tomorrow? Or just crawl back to the guy who bit my face and sent me home immediately after cumming
Compliment me on what matters. Tell me I have a good heart. Tell me I have a wonderful mind. Tell me I have integrity. Tell me that Iām smart or funny or brave. Tell me Iām more than my pretty face.
I often have conversations with my boss about how he believes i need a boyfriend. Each time i deny him this because i first of all donāt believe that a woman is defined by her marital status and secondly because of what Iāve been through i often feel i would fear a relationship. Todayās conversation started as a look on how differently millennials act in relationships with texting styles/tinder and general outlook towards life and dating.one thing he spoke about was how most of us, especially females have put a barbed wire cage around our hearts not letting anyone in, which I personally agree and feel. We then spoke about a staff member who has very recently split from her long term boyfriend. My boss said he always though that she would end up with another person that we know and how he thought that other person felt about the coworker. Itās all fun and games until i have to pretend that im not completely head over heels for this particular person. Saying how lovely his current girlfriend is (which she seems to be from the times Iāve met her). I sometimes for a while forget how much i seem to like him until things like this happen and it hits me with full force. In saying that i am glad he is in a relationship and that she is lovely, because i dont know what Iām looking for in a relationship, or whether or not i would actually be able to be in one. I still often find that i can only be affectionate when intoxicated. The thought of kissing used to appeal to me but now seems scary and distant. Hugging people not in my immediate circle of friends/family makes my skin itch. But sometimes for those short whiles where my feelings for //him// are like a tidal wave it doesnāt all seem so frightening. I still think it would take a world of courage for me (if he were to he single and if he showed any interest in me that is).
