Took a bit of time for 2019 to get going work-wise but I've been getting a bunch of messages about this, so I guess the cat's out of the bag! Happy to finally unveil my first full illustration/poster of the year for [night 3 of] Dave & Tim at the Maya Riviera, which is inspired by calavera skulls, flora and fauna from the local jungles and temple sites, as well as the mariachi bands of Mexico. Prints were produced by the loving hands of @thehalfandhalf and should be available to show attendees at tomorrow night's gig. I expect to an allotment of AP's to sell to you directly via my shop sometime in the coming few weeks. Thanks to DMB and the team for the opportunity and you for your time and attention. My @childishgambino prints will be dropping in my shop (🔗 in bio) very soon, so please keep your eyes on your inboxes (or join the mailing list on my website). In the meantime, here's some process stuff! ▶️1) Final keyplate without colour. Proud I was able to get a decent likeness without tracing! I don't have a problem with it, I just knew I'd be using collage to draw the other smaller faces and wanted them to feel distinct and for Donald's portrait to have more of my own hand in it. ▶️2) Initial thumbnail + notes page. I've other thumbnails, but they're not nearly as good which is why I pursued this. ▶️3) Original rough sketch created using Procreate on the iPad Pro. ▶️4) PureRef mood board containing inspiration and reference imagery. Always good to have open while working (for me). ▶️5) Snapshot progression from original rough to finalized render all done in Photoshop using a combination of purely organic and collage-assisted drawing. Illustrator was used to tweak the BEYNO typeface and create the grids once a structure was decided upon. Created at @raidtheraidstudio. ▶️6) "Redbone Rouge" Layer Breakdown in 5 screens (Y, O, M, Keyblack, Glow-In-The-Dark). ▶️7) Final separations. ▶️8) "Kauai Cool" Layer Breakdown in 6 screens (Mint Green, Cyan, Navy Blue, Violet, Keyblack, and GID). Probably my personal favourite of the three. ▶️9) Printing with my assistant Evan at @akinprojects. ▶️10) "Fire Fly Foil" in hand. So. This happened. It's a true pleasure and unbelievable honour to unveil my official/licensed METALLICA poster for June 18th, 2017 at Chicago's Soldier Field! The band are touring in support of the current album (Hardwired To Self-Destruct) but artists were allowed to take inspiration from any part of the band's legacy, so I sought influence from their first five (my favourite) albums. The composition's border is from the cover of Kill 'Em All and portrays The Four Horsemen as embodiments of the following four albums. At the top of the hour is the Horseman of Conquest/Time as a thrash-influenced speed freak representing Ride The Lightning. Next is the flaming red sword-wielding rider of War who symbolizes Master Of Puppets. Third is the bringer of Famine/Pestilence, bearing a set of scales in reference to the cover of Justice For All, his horse's skin diseased, rotten, and covered in boils. The final figure is a scythe-wielding hooded reaper representing Death, harbouring serpents that slither in and out of its body in reference to the band's self-titled/Black album. Copies available at the show as part of the VIP experience were printed as offsets due to time constraints, but I've been authorized to screenprint a small batch of AP's (Artist Proofs) for sale in my store. Thanks to @timothypdoyle for getting me involved in the series and @metallica for allowing me this honour and thank you all for your time and attention.
