Like in alternate universe they’d be a poly relationship. This is my boyfriend Mike and my boyfriend’s boyfriend Will.

No question about it, I got my butt whooped on Sunday in the masters mile. It’s early, granted, but my lack of quality training so far showed. Out of 19, I was 17th in 6:23, by far the worst mile race time I have ever run.

That said, I have to stick with the training that I am ramping up, and trust the process. And I have to keep working. So today, after resting yesterday, I’ve got two runs on tap. The first one is already done and that was the day’s “hard” session, a “long speed endurance” workout of 150-300-150 at 100% effort. Despite the very long rest (12-15 minutes) between intervals, this was a tough session. The first 150 felt strong, but on the 300, I could feel myself really straining after 200. Then the last 150 is all guts.

It’s amazing how when you run that hard, instead of the controlled effort that distance runners are more accustomed to, you get fatigued really quickly. The temptation is to think “it’s only a couple of reps, it can’t be that hard.” Think again.

My second run will be an easy run at Life Time this evening when I lead the Tuesday social run. I’ll most likely be shuffling along for that one and focusing on recovery. Then tomorrow, it’s back into the water for some swimming.
