The url bloem-kool.tumblr.com was never really popular with me, but i didn’t know what url to choose instead. This was mainly due to fact that i was searching for a good english alternative, but since tumblr is being dominated by the english language and since i’m not a native speaker, coming up with one was very difficult. Good urls are all sold out, and i don’t have the creativity of a native speaker.
I do have that creativity in dutch, so i tried using it, with a lot of long urls to show for it. A url longer than bloem-kool (which means flower-cabbage, or cauliflower if written without the ‘-’) would have been a bad choice, so i was back to nothing. Then i had the brilliant idea to see if the most obvious names would be available. They are. Most dutch speakers choose english for their url i think. But i’m a sort of linguistic nationalist too, and english is not my language. I’m very much convinced dutch is a richer language than english, though my vision may be blurred because of above mentioned things.
So i chose for a dutch url, and a simple one: mijntuin.tumblr.com. Literally translates to mygarden, but is impossible to pronounce for non-native speakers due to the ij and the ui. Anyway, i’m happy with this url. There’s no need to change it in the future, and it’s a better representation of what my blog is about, namely may garden and not cauliflowers.
