Does he even know games? He calls himslef a critic and he sereiously thinks that combat automatically limits the storitelling capacity of a game?
Has he played Nier: Auomata?
Kingdom Hearts?
Bayonetta?
Seriously, the idea that the inclusion of determinated feature detracts from the storytelling potential is so narrowsighted.
Videogames are an iteractive media, much like he points out in other tweets. But that they ae interactive media doesn’t mean that they have to be glorified movies. Combat is an amazing tool for interactivity and inmersion. It forces you to adapt, to hone your skill, to think outside the box and be creative to out-smart the enemy.
There are games that cannot be made without combat, how do you make a spiderman game like the one they are doing? The telltale version of batman had combat. Even Detroit. Become human, wich for many is actually a glorified movie, has some sections with combat.
That is not to say that videogems connot be without combat. Many puzzle games are without combat and they are amazing (Portal comes to mind). But the idea that combat is to be avoided because combat-->violence-->bad (and let’s be honest, this is Jonathan Mcintosh, the idea that combat should be avoided becouse it promotes violence and this can have a negative impact in society is one of his "golden rules”) it’s just a lazy, puritanist and moralistic form of videogame elitism.
