i really like thinking about what the Captainās Chair (might) represent/mean to Spock & Bones despite the fact that i can never piece it all together in a way that feels coherent or definitive
cuz⦠itās very much Jimās Chair, heās The Captain. but sometimes, itās Spockās chair. when Jimās not around, Spock literally & figuratively takes his place; only ever temporarily, since Jim always survives, but there Are times where Spock has to mentally prepare to take over, despite not actually Aspiring to Be a Starfleet captain.
and then Bones.. the shipās surgeon & Chief Medical Officer who spends more time On The Bridge, hovering around the captainās chair, than in his med bay. there are multiple episodes where heās actually Touching it. even as the chair swivels, he keeps his hands pressed to it; sometimes when Jim is there, sometimes when Spock is in charge. maybe a way of connecting to Jim even when they cannot actually reach him.
even When Jimās not there, when Spock is in charge, Bones stays where he always is: at the captainās side.
Spock doesnāt Want to be captain & Bones doesnāt want to be under the command of anyone but Jim, but theyāre both prepared for that possibility. theyād both rather Spock be captain than some random replacement taking control of Jimās ship. at the end of the day, theyāre /Jimās crew/. they work for him, they fight for him, theyāll be the ones keeping his ship running even after heās gone.
if anyone has any thoughts on this idea PLEASE SHARE W ME!!! this is so interesting to me even if i donāt really have a through line so to speak
