cuz… it’s very much Jim’s Chair, he’s The Captain. but sometimes, it’s Spock’s chair. when Jim’s not around, Spock literally & figuratively takes his place; only ever temporarily, since Jim always survives, but there Are times where Spock has to mentally prepare to take over, despite not actually Aspiring to Be a Starfleet captain.

and then Bones.. the ship’s surgeon & Chief Medical Officer who spends more time On The Bridge, hovering around the captain’s chair, than in his med bay. there are multiple episodes where he’s actually Touching it. even as the chair swivels, he keeps his hands pressed to it; sometimes when Jim is there, sometimes when Spock is in charge. maybe a way of connecting to Jim even when they cannot actually reach him.

even When Jim’s not there, when Spock is in charge, Bones stays where he always is: at the captain’s side.

Spock doesn’t Want to be captain & Bones doesn’t want to be under the command of anyone but Jim, but they’re both prepared for that possibility. they’d both rather Spock be captain than some random replacement taking control of Jim’s ship. at the end of the day, they’re /Jim’s crew/. they work for him, they fight for him, they’ll be the ones keeping his ship running even after he’s gone.

& surely Gus knows Shawn is & has been fucking with him but he keeps correcting him anyway.

i just … something something Mary being faced w this version of Clark that’s not really Him at all but it’s also an amalgamation of all the worst parts of him, all the things they’d been trying to work on/through in therapy.
