β‘;- κ° Yoriichi Tsugikuni ! κ±
βΛβΉ α° . . Yoriichi, as a kid, is reserved by nature and doesn't really talk about his feelings.. or talk at all. Having a crush on someone as a kid would be rather difficult for him since he doesn't really think that highly of himself and he doesn't really know what those feelings are.
βΛβΉ α° . . Because of how his father treats him, he'd be reluctant to tell anyone about his crush on the village girl that comes to play with him in the afternoons. You often saw Yoriichi playing by himself among the trees and since then, the two of you had been inseperable.
βΛβΉ α° . . Eventually, you grew to be a constant in his life. It gave him some sense of stability, especially with the way things were at his home. When Yoriichi finally told his mother about his crush on you, the unfortunate event of her passing happened and Yoriichi disappeared. On the night he disappeared, he gave you a single white lily flower β A sign of renewal.
βΛβΉ α° . . You didn't know it then, but it would be years before you saw Yoriichi again.
βΛβΉ α° . . By the time the two of you met again, You had already grown into a wonderful woman. You taught the children in the village and helped in any way you could, you were kind-hearted like that. When news came out that Michikatsu's brother had returned, you were at a stand-still.
βΛβΉ α° . . Would he remember you? Did he still have these childish feelings about you? Where had he been? Does he remember you? It took you a while to muster up the courage to talk to him again, it would no-doubt be an awkward encounter. But by the time you'd made your mind up to go talk to him, Yoriichi had already sat beside you on the field of grass the two of you used to play in as children.
βΛβΉ α° . . That day, you hugged him for the first time; To your surprise, he returned it.
βΛβΉ α° . . Since then, it seemed that this old spark that had bloomed between the two of you had rekindled into a fire so passionate it could burn if you let it. Yoriichi's feelings for you had been on the back-burner ever since he left his home, but now that he had come back, it was as if everything hit him all at once. Regrettably, he was reluctant to tell you about Uta and his family's demise. He was afraid of how you'd take it because he didn't want to be anything less than enough in your eyes.
βΛβΉ α° . . But you had a habit of bringing out the most vulnerable parts of him when he least expected it.
"Yoriichi, why did you begin slaying demons?" you spun the dandelion in between your index finger and thumb, sitting on the log of wood beside him. He had finished with training others in breathing techniques as he had been doing ever since he returned. Yoriichi remained in silence, he seemed to be thinking about something.
That 'something' seemed to plague the man beside you with a sadness you couldn't see on his face. "It's okay, you do not have to disclose such things to me." It hurt to say, but it was the right thing to do. You weren't going to-
"My wife and child." he spoke quietly. "They were slain by a demon."
Your eyes widened at this new piece of information but it hadn't even been a minute before you pulled the man beside you into your embrace. "I'm sorry." The amount of hurt he must have felt, the terror this kind-hearted man had probably gone through.. it was unimaginable to you.
He smiles and returns your embrace, "It was not your fault, You've no need to apologize."
"I know.. Still, it feels like the right thing to say." You part from him slightly, your hand cupping his jaw, "I know that time has passed and we've grown out of our childish ways but.. I will always be here for you. That has not changed, Yoriichi."
βΛβΉ α° . . Strangely enough, you did not disregard him or belittle him as he thought you might have upon knowing of his faults. He was too humble for his own good, but it didn't stop his heart from entangling itself with his feelings for you once more.
βΛβΉ α° . . When he was in the middle of helping people use Sun Breathing, you'd be somewhere near. His 'students' couldn't tell but he'd falter when you smiled at him or waved at him while he was sparring with them. The blood would rush to his face and he'd stumble a little, it made him incredibly bashful even though no one could tell.
βΛβΉ α° . . Courting you would be something he did without thinking. As in, it felt natural for him to walk you to your home on nights; It felt natural for him to eat the food you make for him; It felt natural to stargaze with you during calm nights. Falling in love with him feels like sunlight; It's warm and comforting.
βΛβΉ α° . . He doesn't even tell you he likes you before he starts taking you out on dates so you have a hint that he might feel some type of way about you, but no verbal confirmation β So you play along with it. You let him take you to share meals together when he's not busy. You let him gift you flowers, the same white lilies he gifted you as a child. You let him walk you home as if he's silently protecting you from the demons that lurk at night (he is).
βΛβΉ α° . . You let his touch linger on your hands when he tells you he'll be traveling rather far. You hold his letters close to your heart when he's away, as if they're holding the two of you together. You save every lily he ever gifted you, like a secret. And when he returns, you hug him tightly β a silent moment of gratitude that he did not perish in battle.
βΛβΉ α° . . It would take him a while to confess to his feelings for you, so you would probably have to do it first. when you tell him how you feel, he cries. It's not full on sobbing and waterworks, but a simple tear that streams down his cheek. Of course, like the good friend you are, you wipe it but your hand remains cupping his cheek. His own hand reaches up to yours and lays on the backside, his thumb running up and down your knuckles.
βΛβΉ α° . . Yoriichi might be kind-hearted and reserved, but he's anything but shy. He's always been better with his actions instead of his words, so he returns your confession with a chaste kiss on your forehead because he's a gentleman. He asks if he can kiss you and when you nod to tell him he can, he kisses you like only the two of you matter in this moment.
βΛβΉ α° . . Truthfully, even after his confession β or yours actually, he never really stops courting you. He still sends you letters, but they're accompanied with sweeter words and trinkets he collects from afar. He still gifts you those white lilies you love so much but now he puts them in your hair like a promise of his love for you.
βΛβΉ α° . . 10/10 courting, this man is an absolute gentleman and a sucker for your love. he's completely whipped and it's a privilege to be this man's wife, hands down.
β‘;- κ° Michikatsu Tsugikuni ! κ±
βΛβΉ α° . . Michikatsu is also reserved and stoic, but not in the same way his younger brother is. He's kind-hearted too, but not in the same way his brother expresses it. Michikatsu, since birth, has been 'destined' for great things β or, that's what his father says anyway. In all honesty, he probably would fall for someone with strong character.
βΛβΉ α° . . So when he sees you defending his brother from other village kids who were whispering about him, he feels something in his chest. It isn't anger but it's an uncomfortable feeling he isn't accustomed to. As children, you played with both Michikatsu and Yoriichi. Though Michikatsu would sometimes feel a little jealous of his twin having your attention too, you made sure Michikatsu felt included, even as kids.
βΛβΉ α° . . You'd watch Michikatsu work the sword with a passion that made you flustered. It wasn't his desire to be the best samurai that reeled you in as a young girl, but instead it was his determination. Michikatsu was strong, it was a fact. You knew of how they were both treated by their parents, especially given the era you all lived in and knowing what being a twin meant. So you also knew of the quiet envy Michikatsu felt towards his brother the day his brother disappeared.
βΛβΉ α° . . Michikatsu didn't talk about it, he never talked about his feelings even when his brother was still here. But you knew all too well how strong he felt emotions. As his childhood friend, you felt inclined to stick by his side, even if he'd tell you that he didn't need it. Whilst you had fallen for him as a child for his passion towards his dream, he had fallen for you because of your relentless persistence towards him.
"Why do you insist on following me around? I do not need you to comfort me."
"Because you're my dearest friend, Michikatsu. I'll be here for you, always."
βΛβΉ α° . . Even when the two of you grew into young adults, you remained at his side. Even when Michikatsu lost both of his parents, you remained as his sole constant. After that, it wasn't just a crush anymore. It was full blown admiration, a silent one he kept close to his heart.
βΛβΉ α° . . Like his brother, he won't outright tell you anything at the beginning, but there will be signs. He'd help you when your mother sent you to sell the linens she'd craft. He'd listen to your ramblings during the nights he'd spend with you talking about everything and anything.
"Were you finally able to track down that stray?" Michikatsu asked you as he ate the dumplings you prepared prior to his visit. The aroma lingered in the air, it gave him a sense of nostalgia being here with you. It filled his heart with warmth as he glanced at you who sat across from him.
Your chopsticks halt and you blink up at him, "The stray kitten from two weeks ago? You remembered that?"
"Of course, what kind of friend would I be if I didn't?"
You don't know why it affected you this much when he spoke, but his words felt like an embrace. As if it was so natural for his memory to consist of the things you mentioned to him on those walks you took with him nightly.
βΛβΉ α° . . Despite leading his own battalion and being busy with his occupation as a Samurai, he always had time for you. That, in and of itself, was his way of courting you. He liked to spend time with you, to bask in your presence like a flower in the sun. He'd make carvings of wood for you, gifting you small wooden birds and any other animals he knew you liked.
βΛβΉ α° . . Michikatsu was quiet, yes β but it did not mean he was a pushover. Everyone in the village knew of his quiet affection for you and for the most part, he didn't have any competition. But if any travelers or nomads wanted to try their hand at romancing you, they'd give up immediately upon seeing a distinguished samurai at your side.
βΛβΉ α° . . He was a sucker for your praise, admittedly. So if you ever came to him with a problem, he'd do his best to solve it. Michikatsu speaks more with his actions than his words.
βΛβΉ α° . . Eventually, when he gets tired of feeling the irk of jealousy every time someone shows interest in you, he decides to ask you out on a formal date. When you agree, you'd better believe you'll come out of it with butterflies and hot cheeks. As a girl, you'd never thought that Michikatsu would share your feelings but now that the two of you were grown.. well, Michikatsu didn't waste any time in asking your mother for her blessing.
His warm fingers reach out to cup your supple cheeks, "I do not think I could live another moment not being yours, ________." Your eyes are wide and your cheeks feel hot, but your words fail you. "Please.. tell me you feel the same..?" It's the only time you've ever heard him sound so unsure of something.
So you hold his wrist tenderly and nod, a few tears of happiness spilling off your waterline. "I do, Michikatsu. You don't know how much I feel the same." At your words, the man in front of you smiles. He dips down, his nose brushing against yours and his breath hovering over your lips. He won't connect until you allow it.
And when you eventually close the distance and join him in a tender kiss, he feels like he's on cloud nine β Where everything melts away and only the two of you exist.
βΛβΉ α° . . Yes it was fast and maybe fueled by his silent passion, but Michikatsu knew what he wanted the day he first laid eyes on you. He'll be damned before he lets anyone else court you when he's still alive and more than ready to sweep you off your feet. Overall, Michikatsu is more forward when it comes to courting you and well, you've got to love a man that knows what he wants, right?
βΛβΉ α° . . He gets a 10/10 from me just because I adore him so much :) But seriously, you can be assured that, in a relationship with him, he'll always make you feel like you're on top of the world.
β‘;- κ° If They Were Polyamorous . . . κ±
Realistically? I don't think they would be. Michikatsu has way too much envy of his younger brother to feel comfortable sharing his significant other with him. Yoriichi on the other hand, I don't think he would really mind it? It would be uncharted territory for him but I think he'd be willing to try it out.
Now, hypothetically, if they were to somehow come to an agreement about this, it would definitely be a little chaotic at first.
βΛβΉ α° . . Michikatsu's envy of his brother would definitely lead him to feel some sort of inferiority and jealousy within the relationship, so he would definitely need a lot of reassurance that you love him just as much as his twin.
βΛβΉ α° . . I don't think he would like to hear about your escapades with Yoriichi or about the things the two of you do together just because it would cause that feeling of jealousy to return and he doesn't want to feel that way with you. In short: If you want to be romantically involved with his brother as well, He'll allow it β but don't expect him to want to hear about it.
βΛβΉ α° . . Yoriichi on the other hand? He's more mellow than his brother is, so I think he'd be more accepting of it. He'll get happy for you if you tell him about a date Michikatsu took you on; I think it'd give him a strange sense of joy knowing his brother was happy with you.
βΛβΉ α° . . All in all, I think once the relationship progresses, Michikatsu would eventually learn that he's just as worthy as his brother is β even if they're both completely different individuals at heart. Yoriichi's relationship with his brother would get better as well because they'd both learn about each other's personalities and understand them on a deeper level.
βΛβΉ α° . . Overall, 7/10 relationship just because it would be very emotionally taxing to be with these two at the same time hehe.

understanding Michikatsu/Kokushibo ( a very long rant )
i think many people are more susceptible to seeing michikatsu/kokushibo as just a jealous character simply because of his relationship with his brother (or lack thereof) but in my opinion, i feel its unfair to him as a person because while jealousy is a huge part of his character, thats not all he is. to understand his character, we have to first understand the conditions in which he grew up (no this is not to justify his attitude as an adult, but it does correlate with it).
michikatsu grew up with an abusive father, a sick mother and a 'frail' (as described by him) younger brother. from this we can learn that michikatsu's presumed role in the family was to protect his mother and brother because he was the older sibling/child ( bc usually they are seen as 'second parents').
his status, to him, was everything because that's what his father engraved into him (i'm assuming this because they seemed to be a respectable/wealthy family + his father beat him). he was forced to listen to his father tell him that he was 'different', that he was some sort of chosen one instead of receiving unconditional love like he should have. his clothes were different from that of his younger brother's, his food was different, their living conditions were different, even the way they were treated was different. every single one of these differences served to subconsciously tell michikatsu that he was somehow more 'worthy' than his younger brother.
his mother was sick and couldn't tend to him much so it makes sense that michikatsu would grow up feeling as if he was only worth what he could give while also feeling inadequate and neglected (at his age you don't really realize it until you get older, in his case, i don't think he acknowledges this at all which is why i'm pointing it out).
so, what we know so far is that michikatsu grew up with a warped sense of how the world works and how people should be treated and internalized a lot of it. this is concrete.
in michikatsu's head: a person is only worth what they can give, we already established this. so when he sees that his brother, yoriichi, is not only exceptional with a katana but also very knowledgeable in human anatomy and combat despite being the younger twin and not having any experience, michikatsu is at a loss which he expresses as being disgusted; i think he's not actually disgusted, he just didn't know how to accurate verbalize his feelings, i believe he felt angered, betrayed and confused.
but i digress.
after seeing that, michikatsu knew for sure that the roles would be reversed because of the type of man that his father was. michikatsu then becomes aware that because yoriichi could give more to his father than he could, he was worth more. michikatsu in this moment probably felt uneasy and desolate because he knew that he could not measure up to his brother γΌ he would be cast aside like an afterthought.
and when his mother dies, the relationship between them is even more strained because yoriichi tells michikatsu (indirectly) that their mother was sick (michikatsu didn't know, most likely because he was pushed to do other things by his father or sth else; this is just my opinion). michikatsu realizes that yoriichi wasn't 'clinging' onto his mother, he was helping her.
and remember michikatsu's identity as a protector? Yeah, that crumbles. as an older sibling and child, he probably felt that he had failed his mother and was a mediocre excuse for a brother because 1. he didn't realize that his mother was sick and yoriichi didn't even have to be told to know about her condition 2. his brother was stronger than him in the area michikatsu sought to succeed in.
in short: he felt worthless, because he could not give all that yoriichi could.
when yoriichi runs away, i think michikatsu feels that he was saved the fate that surely awaited him had he stayed. so while he felt worthless, he was able to feel like he could overcome it because the person that made him feel that way (albeit without meaning to; none of what michikatsu feels is yoriichi's fault) was gone.
michikatsu continued up into his adult life as a (probably very respectable and confident) person. so much so that he seemed to be well off with a wife and children and a good enough samurai to the point he had his own subordinates. by this time, he probably felt wistful about his brother but he wasn't feeling those strong feelings of jealousy like he was when he was younger.
..until yoriichi came back and outclassed him in the one area michikatsu sought to succeed in.
michikatsu wanted to be like yoriichi, to be powerful like him with his a good heart free of envy. but he felt that he would be unable to reach his level no matter how much he tried. and try he did; so much so to the point he left his family and became consumed by the intense envy and drive to want to succeed his brother.
michikatsu is a selfish individual, this is seen through his action. he trained and fought to become a slayer, not because he abhorred demons or because he wanted to save people, but because he wanted to surpass his brother.
he wanted the power yoriichi had because if he did, it would mean he was worthy.
of what?
not even he knew, because he regretted it in the end.
and this leads us to why he became a demon. michikatsu, seeing that all the slayers of their time were dying due to the curse mark, knew that he would soon die because he also bore the mark of the slayer. expressing these beliefs, yoriichi would tell his brother that the slayers would keep getting stronger and that they would adapt γΌ something that michikatsu feared because to him, to be strong was to have worth and if the slayers of his time grew to be stronger than yoriichi and himself, that γΌ in his mind γΌ translates to: they would have no worth.
so, when muzan comes with an offer to extend his desire, knowing michikatsu's inner desire to hone his strength and be on par with his brother if not better, michikatsu finds it hard to deny him.
i think that his desperation led him to accepting the offer because 1. he didn't want to die and 2. it offered him a better chance at success and knew that his skills as a slayer paired with the strengths of a demon would surely be more than enough to surpass yoriichi.
but this is where the lines between weakness and strength blurred for michikatsu, because in turning into a demon he had damned himself; he became the thing that his brother could slay without any trouble (as seen when they met about 60-70 years later). he mistook his human limits for weaknesses and sought strength that was not his own. as a demon, he would never have been satisfied with his strength and we saw this when he eventually died.
michikatsu's humanity was his strength and because of his own jealousy, he turned into a being weak and consumed by his own selfishness and envy.
and despite all this, he was never cocky about his own strength either. he was humble, knew his strengths and knew when to admit his faults. his only mistake was thinking that he was never enough as a person and thinking that his human limits were something he needed to correct.
