Spreads from 'Basquiat's "Defacement": The Untold Story,' a Black History Month featured title, published by @guggenheim⁠ ⁠ Jean-Michel Basquiat painted 'Defacement (The Death of Michael Stewart)' on the wall of Keith Haring’s studio in 1983 to commemorate the death of a young black artist who died from injuries sustained while in police custody after being arrested for allegedly tagging a New York City subway station. 'Defacement' is the starting point for the present volume, which focuses on Basquiat’s response to anti-black racism and police brutality. 'Basquiat’s “Defacement”: The Untold Story' explores this chapter in the artist’s career through both the lens of his identity and the Lower East Side as a nexus of activism in the early 1980s, an era marked by the rise of the art market, the AIDS crisis and ongoing racial tensions in the city.⁠ ⁠ Texts by @lalabouvier @nespector @jfaithalmiron and #GregTate are supplemented by commentary from artists and activists such as Luc Sante, Carlo McCormick, Jeffrey Deitch, Kenny Scharf, Fred Braithwaite and Michelle Shocked, who were part of this episode in New York City’s history, which parallels today’s urgent conversations about state-sanctioned racism. But he left out #michaelstewart - the artist who met the same fate in 1983 - possibly because there was no video and he wasn’t shot or suffocated, just beaten to death, like, by a mob. This is the painting #jeanmichelbasquiat made at that time, so none of us could ever forget. Yet, as Cuomo also said, this outrage keeps coming. It’s been going on for nearly three centuries of American life. When will it end? Where is the leadership that will break the back of this monster? Who will stand up to the brutalizing maniac in the WH? Is there someone who actually does love this country, who understands the power of difference, who embraces all who want to live and think freely, who had internalized a sense of justice, and has no need to slag, scam, and denigrate and claw everyone who isn’t him?
