From "The Good Old Days: Adventures in Live Looping 2011-2014" - name-your-price download here: https://michaelgarfield.bandcamp.com/album/the-good-old-days-adventures-in-live-looping-2011-2014-name-your-price ABOUT THIS ALBUM: March, 2011: I came back from two-weeks of initiation in Peru with a new vision for acoustic-electronic music: "cyber-acoustic guitar" became the name for my improvisational adventures into channeling the spirit of a place with shows that blur the boundaries between artist, instrument, and venue. I found myself no longer "playing the guitar," but joined with it as part of something greater in which new feedback loops directed its own shifting evolution. Looping pedals joined the tendrils of this new synthetic creature, multichannel freestyle compositions birthing on the fly... Something new emerged between the past and future – the marriage of flesh, wood, and metal into an entelechy that sings the anthems of a planetary mind awakening to itself as vibration, space, and body. Resulting tunes were equally familiar and foreign, extra-planetary love songs in the language of our ancestors. These twenty-seven tracks are fossils of my favorite moments in four years of fully improvised performances. They chronicle the maturation of my voice and sketch the outlines of an epic tour and self-discovery... I never thought this music would be soundtrack to the art, lovemaking, yoga, writing, childbirth, and magic that it has. I'm honored that it resonates with anyone at all. But then, we live in times when cyborg folk makes sense. And throughout all of this, the goal has been to play the here and now. Above all, looping's an experiment with time travel – evoking different faces of both Kronos (linear clock time, measurement, eternity) and Kairos (the quality or feel of time, duration, opportunity). These pieces are, then, time machines – transporting audience and artist to specific times of day ("Dawn Run Through The Grasses," "Direct Sunlight," "Golden Hour") or moments in the mythic cycle ("Opening Credits," "Crossing The Event Horizon," "Undefeatable Optimism Gets Up After KO"). Certain pieces presence layers in the archeology of consciousness: the primordial intensity of "Fatima/The Apparition" and "Borealis," the nostalgic sweetness of "It All Turned Out All Right" and "Dirty Blond," sci-fi western sunsets, bad trips, and android blues ("I Reach For You," "Fire Swamp," and "Devotion", respectively). Others, like "Juggernaut Paisley" and "Single & Feeling," sound like they were made by clocks. And in a sense, they were – these tunes are the performance of a complex biochemical machine that tracks the rhythms of the seasons, night and day, and plugs itself into the pulsing periodic thrum of our electronic infrastructure, the two uniting musically. So here you are: a remastered retrospective. For now, this is what I consider the definitive collection of my work – THE place to start, for people new to what I'm doing, and rich terrain for introspection as I prepare for my next phase in life and music. Thanks for listening!
