This post was originally a small twitter convo at 3am but revamped for the Tumblr format.
So recently I remember there are two instances where Asirpa directly witnesses sexuality, or discusses it. First is the Anehata arc and the second time was the Jack the Ripper arc.
She definitely knows how sex works on a physical level bc she saw firsthand Anehata’s atrocities. Her condemnation of Anehata’s beastiality also shows that she understands consent very throughly.
Sex isn’t just sex, it’s an emotional connection to her. And Anehata violates that sacred bond.
When Asirpa mentions sex, she uses vocab that highlights the meaning and intent behind the action more than the act itself as seen in her convo with Jack the Ripper (joined hearts with each other).
Asirpa’s pushback against Jack and Anehata’s IS justifiable given one was early 20th century’s incel and the other is a zoophile. Still, I think there are deeper layers to her attitude towards sex than just general knowledge about consent.
Ainu folk tales as presented in the manga seems to have similar ideas when it comes to sex and punishment, how there’s a right and wrong way to have sex. Obviously beastiality is wrong but the story of the fox in particular is too mythical to just be abt beastiality alone.
I should clarify that I’m not Ainu nor am I in a position to criticize anything related to their culture. This is simply an observation and comparison to other stories from other cultures with similar themes.
Just food for thoughts at the end of the day.
The way I see it is that Asirpa understands sex in a technical and emotional way but not rlly on the psychological/psychosexual and sociopolitical aspect. Which is prob fair consider the stage she’s at in life.
