My analysis of Usami's death scene
I think the first question that pops into many people's minds at the sight of this scene is: Does Tsurumi care or not? Does Tsurumi feel sympathy for Usami?
In my opinion, he does feel sick in some way, but his attitude is more about the Usami's sacrifice for him, that's why Tsurumi is making Usami's last moment feel comforting.
He definitely doesn't like Usami in some romantic or sexual way. Tsurumi probably still sees him as a kid. He holds Usami in his arms like a parent holds their child.
By the way, this may also be a factor in why Tsurumi makes Usami's death so that he won't be afraid to say goodbye to life, Tsurumi used to be a father himself but his own daughter was killed.
Usami puts his hand against Tsurumi's face on his own, Tsurumi is not the initiator in this situation. But Tsurumi understands what Usami's last wish is and fulfills it as a reward for his devoted service and sacrifice, bites off his finger. And it is noteworthy that even at such a seemingly intimate moment, he still calls Usami his friend.
Tsurumi's attitude towards Usami's death is also revealed by their pose. This is a direct reference to Michelangelo's Pieta. The main idea of this statue is parental grief and acceptance of sacrifice.
