Sculpted. It’s a metaphor from art much-used in the fashion world to describe minimal shapes with maximal impact. The current Zeitgeist and the La Garçonne aesthetic favors these forms: strong but fluid, structured yet seamless. In modern art, the geometric work of Beverly Pepper is iconic in this sense. She was the first sculptor to use Corten steel – long before Richard Serra, for example – and, inspired as she was by ancient civilizations, Pepper’s work feels spiritual and awe-inspiring. It’s no wonder that The Row, a brand bent on honing the principles of timeless, simple design, looked to celebrating Pepper shortly after her passing this year.   The Row beautifully melded the metaphor of sculpture in their A/W20 collection with Beverly Pepper’s monumental work, in a set designed by Michael Bargo. The label’s cerebral looks in rusty tones paired perfectly with Pepper’s vertical, imposing structures that communicate strength and balance, through one artist’s sheer will to bend steel to her vision.
