I was rewatching Hot Fuzz and I just realized they knew Nicholas won against Michael. That's why they tested him with the 'Narp?' question. And Danny put the pieces together before he went to see Nicholas. I think that's when he decided to fake a stab to the chest to get Nicholas out of there.
