of monsters and men is literally just modern day fleetwood mac: a thesis
disclaimer: what follows are the inane ramblings of a madwoman, written at 2 in the morning, with a brain entirely fried by financial aid applications. proceed at your own risk.
ok let’s start with the music
of monsters and men and fleetwood mac work with very similar genres, resulting in music with a similar sound
both are indisputably rock bands, characterized by their heavy rhythm sections, live instrumentations in studio recordings, and influences from classic blues
i know Nothing about music theory
they also both have a heavy focus on folk, soft rock, pop, and alternative styles
the main difference genre-wise between the two is that fleetwood mac is a very famous classic rock band, while of monsters and men can be defined more as indie
both of their individual "sounds" are defined by a Lot of guitars, mostly acoustic, and very strong rhythm sections (seriously fleetwood mac KNOWS HOW TO BASS and omam KNOWS HOW TO DRUM they're so good)
nanna hilmarsdóttir and christine mcvie have very similar voices, and honestly so do nanna and stevie nicks. nannas definitely stands out because of her accent, and stevies has more of a traditional rock and roll sound to it, but the way they sing has a very similar sound
ok now the Album Thing™ (aka just a little connection i think is fun and interesting)
both bands are very successful, and therefore both have a blessedly large discography, but they also both have their standout albums
if you know of monsters and men, you know "my head is an animal", and if you know fleetwood mac, you know "rumours"
both of their standout albums are based around a single theme: mhiaa is heavily based on icelandic mythology and the traditional storytelling of nordic cultures, and rumours is about the dramatic breakup between stevie nicks and lindsey buckingham
also, while we're on the topic of these two albums specifically, they both have bonus tracks that 100% should have been on the album all along. looking at you "numb bears" and "silver springs"
neither band has ever had an official lead singer, but they both have the most ethereally gorgeous frontwomen with the exact same energy that i am madly in love with
the music also has absolutely identical vibes
witchy (fleetwood: "gold dust woman", "storms", "sisters of the moon", and omam: "backyard", "yellow light", "wild roses")
lesbian (this is not JUST because im in love with both their frontwomen, it's ALSO because of fleetwood’s "rhiannon", "isn’t it midnight", and "angel", and omam’s "josie" and "love love love")
this is a bullet point exclusively for "landslide" and "stuck in gravity". let's all just take a second.
evil (fleetwood: "silver springs", "bermuda triangle", "born enchanter" and omam: "thousand eyes", "vulture, vulture", "wars")
soft boy (fleetwood: "second hand news", "she’s changing me", "tango in the night" and omam: "empire", "under a dome")
woods (fleetwood: "seven wonders", "winds of change", "edge of seventeen" and omam: "dirty paws", "six weeks", "king and lionheart")
in conclusion: i don't know. i don’t know why i felt the need to make this. i don’t know why i decided i needed to share it with the world. i got my music taste and my mental illness from my mother and you all get to reap the rewards. you're welcome? im sorry? i had fun at least
