#2037 ★★★★★ Park Sunyoung Luna Carter
As you can see, everyone has received a five star rating now that the seasons has finally come to a close! This is because I cannot ignore the decisions and choices of the CEOs. That being said, that does not mean I must agree with them so my top three surprising choices/placements of the night are listed below but that is among the winners.
✦ #2005 ★★★★★ Bang Minah
✦ #2020 ★★★★★ Rome Yu Barom
✦ #2021 ★★★★★ JRoyal Kim Jonghyun
Other than that, I will say to see Kasper-ssi and Jimin-ssi both go home without a contract was a stunning revelation. It was also a shame to see Jaebum-ssi go. Such young contestants with promise seem like a better choice for the CEOs and their companies if you ask me. Read on to find out my opinions on each winner and the company that has offered them a contract!
✦ (Please note that the above star rating will not be reflected on the yet to be updated contestants page!)
✦ ✦ (The critique following this shall once again be biased and this was used as reference for the following commentary!)
Are you ready to put on those rose-colored glasses? Here we go!
#2000 Ty Lee Kikwang ★★★★★
Offer from: TRC Entertainment
If Tiger JK-sajangnim were to pass up the LA choreographer one more time, I'd say it's the end on both sides but he offered the contract after surprising news from So Jisub-sajangnim. I must say I have no words on this situation except that this winner must be going through an image cleaning after signing the contract and it's safe to say he will be signing. Given the clean image of Royal and how Jisub-sajangnim has strict guidelines (from what netizens can tell) when it comes to protecting his company's image, despite mentioning that Kikwang-ssi passed over an opportunity to audition privately, I think he should be relieved. Kikwang-ssi suits the freedom presumably given to TRC trainees following a certain time period after debut. Let's hope he can clean up his image like Zico seems to have since he turned down his offer in Season 1.
#2003 Mark Tuan Yi-En ★★★★★
Offer from: KT Entertainment
At first, I was skeptical about this decision but taking the history of the company into consideration and the type of artists they promote, this is surprisingly one of the best matches made tonight. With a cute face and incredible dancing skills with a strong potential in rap, it makes sense that Miss Katie Lee would scoop up this English speaker for her company. He's certainly going to appeal to the large international following of the company.
#2005 Bang Minah ★★★★★
Offer from: Royal Entertainment
The first of the most il-suiting placements in my opinion, similar to how I mentioned Jisub-sajangnim's relieved state on passing on a potentially controversial trainee such as Kikwang-ssi, it's astounding that he would take on Bang Minah-ssi. With his current public trainees going through a few small scandals, nothing too note-worthy now but kindling for what will undoubtedly be a large fire to extinguish should debut occur, you'd expect the CEO to take on someone less riddled with doubt and in my personal opinion, charisma. Whether or not Ms. Bang reaches debut or stays with Royal, we'll have to see.
#2007 Bang Yongguk ★★★★★
Offer from: Nova Entertainment
An odd placement although not one of my top three, chances are that Yongguk-ssi is indeed following in Zico-ssi's footsteps. With an offer from Nova and his original choice being TRC, there's been no confirmation or otherwise if he has signed the contract but my bet is that he has not. While it is easy to see why Nova would want Yongguk-ssi, I do not think the environment or company image suits him well.
#2008 Jung Joonyoung ★★★★★
Offer from: Sphere Entertainment
It's not surprising that Sphere offered both rockers of the competition a contract with Royal Pirates as one of their current artists. However, I've seen a rise among Royal Pirates fans that are wondering if Sphere plans to replace Royal Pirates with another up and coming band within KPOP. I would've liked to see another company attempt to sign either contestant. The same concept within one company can cause strife but it is comparatively a good placement and Joonyoung-ssi had a hilarious response. I admire his blunt but honest persona.
#2012 Park Chanyeol ★★★★★
Offer from: KT Entertainment
Firstly, this is not about Chanyeol-ssi but leading up to the results. I am extremely disappointed with the "suspenseful" ending of the MGAs Season 2. If we were supposed to be surprised that Chanyeol-ssi received a contract offer over Jaehwan-ssi, I don't think the producers see the same show I have been watching over these past exciting weeks. It would've been an upset to see Jaehwan-ssi win over Chanyeol-ssi and I mean no disrespect to the former but the latter has talent and stage presence. Overall, he has that "it" factor. The pair announced with their results was an upset as well. In terms of showcasing rapping talent, I'd say Chanyeol-ssi and Kasper-ssi are on par with each other when it comes to potential. The final results being between those two would've been much more exciting but enough about the process.
Moving on, while I was disappointed with the delivery, I was excited for Chanyeol-ssi. Another good placement, it's not surprising that Chanyeol-ssi was selected by Katie Lee-sajangnim but what is on my mind now is whether or not his full potential will be explored.
#2013 Lily Choi Jinri ★★★★★
Offer from: Sphere Entertainment
The judges spoke so pleasantly of Jinri-ssi and I've said a few times myself that she has the potential to be one of the nation's little sisters. That being said, the fact that her father works with MNET looms on my mind with Tiger JK-sajangnim's words. "The PDs think so too." I disagree with the (lack of) critique regarding Jinri-ssi's performance throughout the season but that shall be left for my commentary on JRoyal-ssi's results. I have no comment on whether or not Sphere was a good placement for her other than it seems like they are picking contestants of similar concepts and talents to artists they have. Joonyoung-ssi and Myungsoo-ssi for Royal Pirates. Doojoon-ssi and Rome-ssi for ChAOS, and now Jinri-ssi for She'z. My main question regarding Jinri-ssi is why Baek Jiyoung-sajangnim chose her despite saying "she's not the strongest performer in the group." The rest of the commentary rests on my mind like a double-edged sword.
#2015 Byun Baekhyun ★★★★★
Offer from: Nova Entertainment
One of the only confirmed new trainees from the MGAS (inferred from his sns updates and interview with SJ!), given how happy this winner seems, it's difficult to be displeased with the result and I for one am not. When it comes to energy, it makes sense for bubbly Baekhyun-ssi to be a supernova. I hope to see a lot out of this ball of energy in the future!
#2017 Kim Myungsoo ★★★★★
Offer from: Sphere Entertainment
Similar to Joonyoung-ssi, the offer from Sphere is easily understood in terms of his strengths but there is a versaility in Myungsoo-ssy that could've been better placed in either of his alleged dream companies. Although it is not where I would've placed him and I cannot easily imagine him there, it is not a horrible placement.
#2020 Rome Yu Barom ★★★★★
Offer from: Sphere Entertainment
My reasoning stems from the original comment of Hyunbin-sajangnim, the CEO of Nova which is coincidentally Rome-ssi's first choice. If all five were "thoroughly impressed," why is it that Sphere has been taking the majority of the large contenders in this season? It seems to me that the other companies have not had much of an interest in the contestants, most notably seen with Royal only making one offer to Minah-ssi of all the choices. The other reason I have chosen Rome-ssi as one of the most ill-placed contestants is his reaction to the news. We've seen him dominate the stage with confidence each round but his apology via his youtube accoun, bboybyu, shows us a shyer image of Rome. To see the contestant who promised us a 20/20 experience become meek in front of the camera raises a lot of questions. That being said, he is the only contestant confirmed to not sign his contract offer. It might not have been the best decision to publicize his decision but I admire the attempt.
#2021 JRoyal Kim Jonghyun ★★★★★
Offer from: KT Entertainment
When considering KT Entertainment and its friendly atmosphere, it's difficult to think of a current artist with the company that isn't as friendly and bubbly. That being said, it's difficult to picture JRoyal-ssi at the company so one has to wonder what Katie Lee-sajangnim was thinking. His variety of talents could've been the deciding factor given how KT artists typically have a wide range of talents, venturing into acting and MCing for certain artists but the commentary from the judges contradict the possibility of this happening. Having worked with this contestant in the past, I can tell you myself he does not seem like KT material and I question how he will fit in at the company and if Jinri-ssi so called "saved" JRoyal-ssi, why not place them together within a company? The idea itself that she brought out the best in him and saved his performance is an insult to JRoyal-ssi who I find shined better on his own.
#2032 Jung Hana ★★★★★
Offer from: TRC Entertainment
It is not surprising that Tiger JK-ssi picked up one of the female rappers from the competition but I was hoping to see more versatility in his choices. Jung Hana-ssi is a good start given her dancing skills and rapping abilities. I'm sure he appreciates any female rapper who can pull off one of his wife's songs but I do think he should've chosen some of the singers among the finalists. With the majority of the publicly known trainees within TRC being rappers, it's surprising that he did not aim for more dancers or singers this season as he did with Hayi-ssi last season.
#2034 Yoon Doojoon ★★★★★
Offer from: Sphere Entertainment
Another contestant receiving an offer from Sphere, the company was listed as Doojoon-ssi's dream company and he was one of the only contestants to be successfully matched through the competition. Whether or not he signed has yet to be confirmed. Seeing as it was his first choice company, I have no complaints but I do think a singer of his caliber could do well in Royal or TRC, which I'd like to personally see because I think TRC did not take a wide range this season whereas Royal's range with one chosen contestant was extremely narrow.
#2036 Alaska Park Sunyoung ★★★★★
Offer from: KT Entertainment
Congratulations to Alaska-ssi! Successful in making her return to KT, I have no complaints about this match and hope her the best. Hopefully, there are no hard feelings among the trainees she once knew about her return but by the comments on twitter including a rare one from fellow KT trainee Kim Taeyeon from season 1 who is rarely found on social media, that should be no problem for the twenty-one year old.
#2037 Park Sunyoung Luna Carter ★★★★★
Offer from: Sphere Entertainment
One of the few confirmed new trainees of Sphere (confirmed via her sns updates and fellow MGA contestant Jinri-ssi!), given Luna-ssi's reaction and updates regarding Sphere, I have no complaints about this match as well. My complaints from here on out refer more to the selections made.
On what was supposed to be an exciting night, there were various ups and downs, more so than a roller coaster and at the end of the day I am altogether not too pleased with the results. How a company did not sign Kasper is beyond my capacity and the choices of some of the CEOs baffles me too. Am I as pleased as I was last MGA season? No, but I'm always here to give you the latest news! Will you be keeping up with your favorite contestants from this season of MNET MGAs?
My surprise for you readers is that I've been keeping up with last season's contestants. Are you ready to find out what they've been up to?

Hello everyone, this S.J and welcome to a special LIVE FROM THE INTERNET episode. The second Mnet Global Auditions has ended with exciting news: the announcement of a third season. I'm here with a special friend right now. [--turns to mystery person ] Say hi.
Lol, now she's gone. You'll might see her around more often. I wanted to show her how great K-Pop is so I brought her along with me. I also met someone else during the finale. She's another netizen that you should all get to know. It's Mikki. She's mostly a Triple Crown and Royal stan, and she is simply adorbs. You might have seen her and me interact on Twitter during the entire show. Speaking of show, I got to say that MGA2 is the season of plot twist. Let's break those results down with my side of cake.
://001: The finale.
Compared to the finale...actually as a whole, the second season was more organized, fun and professional. It truly felt like watching American Idol for example. That's what I liked about it. However. However. I can't say that I was truly 110% happy about this finaale. I don't but, I just felt a little disappointed? Don't worry, I'm going to breakdown this section a bit later. I really liked that they took the time to talk to every single person in small groups. They should have spread the "losers" evenly in the groups. The last group was only one winner and it gave a bittersweet but more bitter end note to the finale. It would have been better if we ended with a smile and with more "winners". Don't get me wrong though, all the finalists are winners in my book. They slayed in their own way the final stage.
://002: My disappointments.
I feel like the producers and CEOs almost entirely disregarded the contestants dream company. Now, obviously, the CEO have a say in who comes and who doesn't, but I wished their were more people who had joined their dream little world. Now, I can predict a ZIco-like scandal. We sort of hard about what Kikwang did to Royal, but like sometimes the individual just really feels for a certain company and doesn't see him or herself grow in another. You get scandals like the Sphere trainees who voiced their dislike for the company they signed into. It sucks to be honest. You can't really be angry at them as long as they takle the issue in a respectful manner of course.
Also, unlike the first season, not many duo signed together. It's weird. Like I thought some groups would have stuck together really. I don't know. In some performances, you could see that stage chemistry that make the performance more enjoyable. Who knows perhaps, this time around the contestants didn't feel that well together like puzzle pieces. It's probably that I grew attached to some groups after their stage. It's minor disappointment here.
I didn't like some of the CEOs's behavior. I'm sorry, but some sounded so arrogant that in the contestant shoes...I wouldn't even agree to sign the contract with them. Like for real. But I still love the CEOs...it's just that stuck-up attitude is not that great. It's cool when you got that Simon or that Chef Ramsay vibe sort of because even them you, sometimes, what to hit them. At least, I'm very happy that Miss Korea gave Alaska a second chance. It was one wonderful moment in history. Like yes.
Pretty much it on the disappointments.
://003: My hopes.
I hope that some finalists will give some thought to the company that isn't necessarily their favourite. It's not the greatest thing to pull a Zico. You never know when you will get the chance to audition again or get scouted. Those opportunities are rare. Bear in mind that between the first and the second season...there was like half a year. If you can wait, then go for it.
Next, for season 3, please bring back all those official interviews and inside cam, because that was great. It was truly amazing to see the human side of the contestants. I'd like also a more humane approach of the show. Like, I don't know how to clearly explain it, the show is rather cold. Or maybe I could give out some ideas to other producers out there, but like look at how X Factor and the Voice are. Bring in the "coachs". A mentor system. I guess the MGAs are really like the Got Talent and Idol series. MGAs is also missing on the failed auditions portion but it's alright. It's good to keep some hidden to protect the pride of some.
This hope is too the companies. I hope to see more of your trainees. Concerts or projects. I mean what happened to the Season 1 finalists? What have they become? It would be cool to see more of them. It would be cool if you could have another &A or company radio event. You know.
[-- ;) ]
On this note, guys, we are sending you off. Can't wait to see who accepts their offers. Sorry, it's not finalist centric. The fangirling is all over Twitter. Ciao~
JANG HAE BYEOL's MGA RECAP ★ FINALS AND NEW RATINGS! 〖 ★ 〗
It’s that time again and Jang Haebyeol is here at your service providing you my own personal insight on the latest MGA news! What does come with it are a few reminders of last season's performances and previous performances from this season. First, let's recap on the pairings for the finals!
The pairings are as follows:
✦ (Click their contestant number for their activity in Season 2 now that it has concluded!)
#2000 + #2005! ★★★★✩ Ty Lee Kikwang + Bang Minah
#2003 + #2008! ★★★✩✩ Mark Tuan Yi-En + Jung Joonyoung
#2007 + #2017! ★★★★✩ Bang Yongguk + Kim Myungsoo
#2009 + #2020! ★★★★✩ Jeffrey Im Jaebum + Rome Yu Barom
#2011 + #2024! ★★★★✩ Kasper Lee Serine +Park Jimin
#2012 + #2026! ★★★★✩ Park Chanyeol + Lee Jaehwan
#2013 + #2021! ★★★✩✩ Lily Choi Jinri + JRoyal Kim Jonghyun

From this point on, only 15 will receive the chance to sign with one of the big 5 companies. Who do you think it will be?
✦ (Please note that the above star ratings will not be reflected on the yet to be updated contestant page and the new ratings are below the cut! Also, bias has not been exempted from this round's rating as it is the final round!)
Are you ready to put on those rose-colored glasses? Here we go!
#2000 + #2005! ★★★✩✩ Ty Lee Kikwang + Bang Minah
Pretentiously, I will quote myself and mention my prior expectations of this pairing. "With a blend of vocals and rap with well-executed choreography, these two could have a fighting chance." With the male lead being a choreographer with an impressive resume and the female lead aiming for Nova, a company renowned for dance, the choreography that blossoms and flourishes during this performance does not fail sub-par in comparison but let's rewind to what I said regarding Kikwang-ssi's performance in the third round. I reported that the song did not suit Kikwang-ssi's style in order to deliver the best performance. However, the song choice here seems perfect for him, a nod to the LA hip-hop scene people categorize him as belonging to. That said, I do think more could have been done in terms of better suiting the song to Minah-ssi. Shockingly, my critique veers more towards the lyrics for this final round performance. I will not quote it specifically myself for the sake of premature eyes but there are suggestive lyrics and a mention of illegal contraband. I wonder how that will affect censorship.
#2003 + #2008! ★★★★✩ Mark Tuan Yi-En + Jung Joonyoung
A lack of choreography isn't shocking in order to accommodate one partner, as expected, but the ability of the two to meld and blend their preferences together culminates in a beautiful result. The lyrics do include profanity so my admiration does falter but it does so fleetingly in comparison to the intention of the song, showcasing Joonyoung-ssi's lovely vocal ability and introducing the other talents of Mark-ssi that we have no witnessed until this round: rapping and piano playing skills. As the rap is unique and different from the original, transitioning from English into Korea, it's evident that it was written by Mark or the two together. Seeing as we already know Mark-ssi's ability to dance and Joonyoung-ss's ability to rock, the versatility emphasized in this round will likely lead to a contract. A pompous guess but I predict this is not the last we will see of these two talented contestants.
#2007 + #2017! ★★★★★ Bang Yongguk + Kim Myungsoo
Expectations are set at the highest level for this pairing and I wasn't sure there could be a song that suited both styles of each contestant. Whereas Mark-ssi and Joonyoung-ssi had to find a steady middle ground, the song choice of Yongguk-ssi and Myungsoo-ssi is perfect for both of them and for this particular stage. This is a type of performance at its purest form, no gimmicks, no fan-service but pure effort and talent. Myungsoo-ssi's accent is not the best but considering the attempt and the situation, it is comparable to idols currently on the scene now. While not as exciting or thrilling as the other stages for the final round, I favor this performance for its message and execution.
Not veering away from my expectations, Jaebum-ssi and Rome-ssi brought a cheerful, cheesy performance composed of singing, (mild)rapping, and choreography that is chock-full of fan-service. A start that varies from the other performances, Rome's charm is showcased in the first part of their act and an act is what they begin with. Telling a story with their performance, the curt synopsis being "Excuse me miss but I think I like you," their farewell statement to the audience, I have to say that all the women in the crowd were smiling at either charming contestant. Embracing the differences in their skills, Jaebum-ssi focuses on singing while Rome-ssi showcases his dancing, playing the crowd the best they both can. While not a thrilling performance either, it is enjoyable and brings a smile to your face, a stark contrast to the dance tracks and ballads chosen by their fellow competitors.
#2011 + #2024! ★★★★★ Kasper Lee Serine +Park Jimin
This performance left me speechless from Kasper-ssi's more than capable LTE rapping to Jimin-ssi's showstopping vocals. While I do have a concern over the fluiduty and continuity of one song to the other, the transition itself is masterfully executed, a series of beats interluding into Sweet Dreams. That being said, it has to be mentioned that the song was also on last season's finale, performed by Hanbin-ssi and Yuri-ssi of TRC Entertainment (Hanbin-ssi's status allegedly reduced to that of former trainee, reasons unknown). A transition utilized juxtaposed against that of an original mash-up, it's difficult to compare to the previous contestants but this performance speaks for itself in terms of talent. After all, originality and creativity could be developed within a company.
#2012 + #2026! ★★★★✩ Park Chanyeol + Lee Jaehwan
✦ (I could not open and read the solo on kenrk's blog so this review does not cover every aspect of the performance but was conducted regardless for the sake of completion!)
The pair I previously dubbed comparible to Spidey and Max ala The Amazing Spiderman 2. Jaehwan-ssi seems at home with the ballad genre and Chanyeol-ssi shows us a completely different side of him from the previous round. The use of the piano and his performance is what saves Jaehwan-ssi in my eyes in terms of showcasing more versatility whereas Chanyeol-ssi thrived on showing his versatility round to round. On the other hand, one necessary aspect of the performance to point out is the lack of connection I felt between the two. Should the performers feel interchangeable as in Jaehwan-ssi could've easily been replaced by another singer for this performance and vice versa for Chanyeol-ssi as in another rapper could've stood in his place, it is a problem of compatibility. My reasoning for this is the perfect compability of Myungsoo-ssi and Yongguk-ssi with their song and each other's vocal strength. Chanyeol-ssi and Jaehwan-ssi display strong vocal strength but individually as opposed to collectively.
A beautiful song choice that reminds me of former contestant #2023. The sad, spiteful tone of the song best suits JRoyal-ssi's image and I would've enjoyed more of a contrast to Jinri-ssi's soft, gentle image. This review will become more personal, in regards to me expressing what concepts I would've liked to see, ranging from a more playful duet as the chemistry between these two must've been amusing to witness, to one such as "미친거니" . The provision of a promised "twist" as Jinri-ssi says gives us better perspective on JRoyal-s versatility, given his rap, but the same could not be said for Jinri-ssi beyond her singing skills, which are impressive as well. Beautiful simplicity is how I would describe this performance but admittedly I would have liked to see more.
#2015 + #2032! ★★★★✩ Byun Baekhyun + Jung Hana
With an exquisite mash-up, explosive choreography, and powerful vocals, you must be wondering why I am not awarding this pair a 5 star level performance. It is wonderfully executed, vocals and choreography meshing in a manner that celebrates collaboration but it is the fact that I am far too distracted by the constant changing of beats and its overall business to pay attention entirely to the performers that I cannot grant 5 stars. With a beautiful transition seen in other performances, I find it hard to find my bearing during this performance. This is no fault of the performers or the performance they gave but the music editing. Seeing as they chose the song, I cannot ignore how that affects my scoring. That aside, I would be awe-striken if they walked away without a contract or being shown interest in.
#2027 + #2034! ★★★✩✩ Kim Yubin + Yoon Doojoon
The vocals and acting emphasized in this performance are beautiful. I won't deny I am more inclined towards Doojoon-ssi, feeling interrupted by the sudden call of Yubin-ssi to the audience in the midst of an emotional song but she does return to the somber atmosphere well. The performance itself is amazing but the chemistry is lacking, as it should be for the song, and they seem to bring energy to the stage despite a slower paced song.
#2036 + #2037! ★★★★★ Alaska Park Sunyoung + Park Sunyoung Luna Carter
Risque choreography in comparison to their other competitors and charismatic expression to match the lyrics, this performance is on fire. Potentially a crowd favorite, this mash-up is busy as well but not as contradictory so. My only hesitation is on the fact that the choreography was more risque but considering the choice of lyrics on behalf of contestants such as Mark-ssi and Kikwang-ssi, it's considerably more acceptable. Katie Lee-sunbaenim, do you think you will take back Alaska-ssi with this outstanding performance?
As some of you might have noticed, I did award five star rankings because this is the final report on the MGAs in terms of performances and ranking. The next time we meet, the trainee line-up for this season's MGAs will be out! Are you just as nervous as our contestants?
JANG HAE BYEOL's MGA RECAP ★ PERSONAL SUGGESTIONS! 〖 ★ 〗
✦ (Please note that certain characters mentioned below are no longer active in Rookies! and I apologize in advance for any confusion it might provide the current muns of the same faceclaim!)
It’s that time again and Jang Haebyeol is here at your service providing you my own personal insight on the latest MGA news! There isn't much to report finalist wise except a few sns updates and the MNET campaign spreading to various channels such as youtube and via their official MGA website. Small clips of the 20 finalists have been showing on numerous forums, do you have a favorite now? Which persona has MNET been advertising do you think is most accurate?
As promised, I'm going to discuss the possible results of the final round and what I hope happens. This is going to be the most biased post I make regarding the MGAs yet and the only post that I will not try to avoid bias in. Please respect that it will be the most honest perspective I offer because I respect your opinions as well. I have an opinion, you have an opinion. You have a voice, so do I. They are equal.
✦ (Another warning that this is the most biased post of the current coverage on the MGAs!)
Are you ready to put on those rose-colored glasses? Here we go!
With that out of the way, I would like to start with who I personally think will certainly get signed based off popularity alone.
✦ #2007 ★★★★★ Bang Yongguk
✦ #2017 ★★★★★ Kim Myungsoo
✦ #2020 ★★★★★ Rome Yu Barom
The first three should come as no big surprise. This might not seem as biased as I suggested I might get but let's gradually get to that! Stating the obvious is the best start to a review, if you ask me. Moving on, based off of personality, I think the following will be signed.
✦ #2012 ★★★★✩ Park Chanyeol
✦ #2015 ★★★★✩ Byun Baekhyun
✦ #2036 ★★★★✩ Alaska Park Sunyoung
This is not to undermine the talent of any of the above listed but I believe their personalities and their increasing popularity (based on my own research, not factual statistics so please don't cite me!), I believe they should be signed. Whether or not KT will accept Alaska-ssi again is questionable but other companies are liable to have interest as well. Chanyeol-ssi and Baekhyun-ssi are bright characters that would be an addition to any company. I believe Chanyeol-ssi's rapping could bring him far and Baekhyun-ssi shows promise in outside work given his background in musicals, an asset for any company seeing as most will outsource their idols for campaigns and musicals once their "idol" stage of popularity begins to fade. Now for the most controversial listing I will offer, those I do not think should receive a contract.
✦ #2005 ★★★✩✩ Bang Minah
✦ #2026 ★★★✩✩ Lee Jaehwan
✦ #2027 ★★★✩✩ Kim Yubin
My opinions on these three contestants may or may not have been clear before this update. I would love to give Minah-ssi the benefit of the doubt but her comments on Sphere and how her actions (in reference to her strong preference for Nova and not Sphere at this point in time) reflect on her as a person bear heavily on my mind. Does Sphere not take offense to this? As one of the big 5 companies on a nationally televised program, I wouldn't stand for this disregard. Call me bitter if you'd like as a fictional CEO in this situation but to watch any of my former trainees go on and on about their passion for another company when they originally consented to a contract with my own would be unpleasant, to put it in the kindest fashion. My line of thinking draws from the example of Woo Jiho-ssi, or as netizens better know him as from MGA Season 1, Zico, now signed under TRC Entertainment.
Currently one of the most well-known TRC trainees as a former MGA contestant, no true fan of the MGAs can forget that he turned down Nova Entertainment because he stood strong in his belief that he belongs in TRC. Should someone believe they want to be with one company in particular, then go for it. It's admirable but equally admirable to accept the contract and adapt to your new situation. A contract is not a laughing matter. Korea is a society that grew as one of the fastest in the world because of business and its business tactics. We are a network of connections and contracts acquired because of a past relationship versus chasing a new partner because of better opportunities. It is what differentiates us from Western concepts of business so I think for Nova to pick her up would be an awkward predicament.
That being said, if it were to happen, it would not be the first time a company took in a trainee from another company or attempted to. Katie Lee expressed interest in former MGA Season 1 contestant Im Jinah-ssi, who was also of Sphere, and in Lee Hongbin, currently with Royal Entertainment. (Please keep this in mind for a later portion of this post!)
Moving onto Lee Jaehwan-ssi, my opinion is that he is trainee potential but too shy for my personal preference. If this were a specific company's auditions, I would say his chances are exceedingly better but with a show like the MGAs, you question why such a shy character has made it so far besides talent and charm. I did say it could bring him far but I do not know if it can guarantee him a contract. I liken him to Max in Amazing Spiderman 2 to Chanyeol's "Spidey" personality.
As for Yubin-ssi, I've touched on the issue of tattoos and public image and opinion when it comes to her appearance. It is the main reason I do not think she should receive an offer. Similar to Minah-ssi, I am surprised she made it this far given the nuances of our society. The small clip we saw of her current lifestyle and the underground rap scene (which is unusual for MNET to film and broadcast considering the point of underground rap is to remain underground) shows how much she belongs on that stage versus a MNET MGA stage for all ages. Let's think back to the age groups viewing the show and advice from MGA Season 1 finalist Zico-ssi himself, and I am paraphrasing but he said to mind your song choice because it is a family show.
My last and final notes on the MGAs this season regard the potential results and the offers the companies will lay out. I am utterly disappointed that last season did not show more conflict in terms of who was signed and what company made the offer. For those who received the highest scores, I expected more than one company to show interest. That is television to me! Show conflict amongst the CEOs. Katie Lee-sunbaenim expressing her interest in Im Jinah-ssi after the MGAs concluded and she was signed with Sphere seems like a waste of an offer and a famous broadcast moment between Katie Lee-sunbaenim and Baek Jiyoung-ssi.
This is my conclusion on the MGAs Season 2! until the final round performances happen in less than 48 hours! As usual, feel free to send in your opinions and questions anytime!

JANG HAE BYEOL's MGA RECAP ★ PAIRINGS AND RATINGS! 〖 ★ 〗
It’s that time again and Jang Haebyeol is here at your service providing you my own personal insight on the latest MGA news! With the finalists announced and the pairings for the fourth round released, the internet is positively buzzing with word of what might happen on that stage in a few fated days. First, let's list off the pairs!
The pairings are as follows:
✦ (Click their contestant number for their progress in Season 2 so far!)
#2000 + #2005! ★★★★✩ Ty Lee Kikwang + Bang Minah
#2003 + #2008! ★★★✩✩ Mark Tuan Yi-En + Jung Joonyoung
#2007 + #2017! ★★★★✩ Bang Yongguk + Kim Myungsoo
#2009 + #2020! ★★★★✩ Jeffrey Im Jaebum + Rome Yu Barom
#2011 + #2024! ★★★★✩ Kasper Lee Serine +Park Jimin
#2012 + #2026! ★★★★✩ Park Chanyeol + Lee Jaehwan
#2013 + #2021! ★★★✩✩ Lily Choi Jinri + JRoyal Kim Jonghyun
#2015 + #2032! ★★★✩✩ Byun Baekhyun + Jung Hana
#2027 + #2034! ★★★✩✩ Kim Yubin + Yoon Doojoon
#2036 + #2037! ★★★★✩ Alaska Park Sunyoung + Park Sunyoung Luna Carter
The star ratings here reflect what level the kind of performance I expect. On a more direct note, if the pairings weren't the result of randomization (what I suspect), I call into question the judgment of MNET producers and the panel of judges themselves for placing certain contestants together. If you want a more detailed explanation, read below but to keep it brief, none of the pairings received a five star ranking because, once again it's anyone's game with your votes!
From this point on, only 15 will receive the chance to sign with one of the big 5 companies. Who do you think it will be?
✦ (Please note that the above star ratings will not be reflected on the currently updated contestant page!)
Are you ready to put on those rose-colored glasses? Here we go!
#2000 + #2005! ★★★★✩ Ty Lee Kikwang + Bang Minah
I expect some beautiful, passionate choreography from this pair because I think that is what will save them. This pairing is so odd because their dynamics simply do not match. Not only that but with the recent comment scandal on one of Kikwang-ssi's sns updates, the public image of these two is coming into question. With a blend of vocals and rap with well-executed choreography, these two could have a fighting chance. My review seems doubtful and contradictory to the high star rating but that stems from a positive aspect of Kikwang-ssi's reputation as a choreographer. Not to mention, the two both have the support of a handful of public trainees on their side.
#2003 + #2008! ★★★✩✩ Mark Tuan Yi-En + Jung Joonyoung
One of the oddest pairings on the show entirely, I'm not quite sure what the judges expect by placing a rocker and a dancer together. You wonder if the judges are setting this pair up for failure because it would take a great feat for this to be pulled off brilliantly without compromising the most regarded skill of the other. Should Joonyoung-ssi be able to rock out the way he is meant to on any stage, how will it be for Mark-ssi? If Mark-ssi comes up with choreography to suit the song, it would still come off as awkward and forced considering the stages are meant only for the two contestants. If back-up dancers were utilized and the dance choreographed by Mark-ssi, given his history, it could be beautiful. As for this final round performance, I have not a single inkling.
#2007 + #2017! ★★★★✩ Bang Yongguk + Kim Myungsoo
One more time, it's an odd pairing! Similar to the pairing of Mark Tuan-ssi and Jung Joonyoung-ssi, I think this pair is doomed to sacrifice the particular performance style of the other unless there is a strong show of versatility. Yongguk-ssi has a more sleek rapping style whereas Myungsoo goes for the more emotional ballad-like songs. While there is a selection of songs that could work, the tone of the two separate contestants is a stark contrast that either comes together beautifully or will flop in the end. The creativity and ease on stage is what keeps their ranking slightly above the previously mentioned pair, not to mention they're two of the top fore-runners. Now that I think about it, it doesn't seem fair. I wonder what the judges were thinking.
This is going to be one of the most promising pairs, because these two know how to play a crowd. What will be difficult is that viewers have yet to see Rome-ssi's other skills despite him being the third fore-runner of the competition til this round. Jaebum-ssi is a singer and we know that Rome-ssi can at least beatbox but will that work together well? What I expect is a singing and rapping combination with choreography but without knowing Rome-ssi's abilities past dancing, there's no guarantee. He's shown a lot of creativity in the past two performances and hopefully that will mesh well with Jaebum-ssi. If it doesn't, they're still charming eye-candy.
#2011 + #2024! ★★★★✩ Kasper Lee Serine +Park Jimin
This pairing I have faith in compared to the others within the final round. Both are adept at providing a powerful, emotional performance fully equipped with talent and skill, from Jimin's full and round singing voice to Kasper's bubbly appearance but deadly rapping ability. Whether or not that is enough to pull the popularity vote and win isn't as likely as I wish I could say for them, given the results of last season's MGAs.
#2012 + #2026! ★★★★✩ Park Chanyeol + Lee Jaehwan
Another unlikely pair, I wouldn't have paired this energetic rapper with this soft-spoken ballad singer but it could make for a strong, captivating duet if executed well. Personality wise, I hope that Jaehwan-ssi isn't outshone by his partner but I could very well see that happening. With a countenance as lively as Chanyeol-ssi's and a stage presence like his, it'll be interesting to see how the two males work out their performance. The contrast in their voices will be lovely with the right song.
The chemistry between this pair is what I worry about most. Their styles are very different and I would've thought JRoyal-ssi would fare better with either of the Sunyoungs.Jinri-ssi is a better suited partner for Baekhyun-ssi but we'll get there next. What could make this pairing explosive is if there were to utilize their contrasting images, her soft, gentle, and youthfulness to his more intense, mysterious aura could shine and allow each contestant to show off their individuality. I wonder what direction they'll be taking.
#2015 + #2032! ★★★✩✩ Byun Baekhyun + Jung Hana
Based off quirkiness, I would say these two are a duo to be beat if not for the theory I strongly believe in that Baekhyun-ssi would perform better with a partnet such as Jinri-ssi or even Mark-ssi. As for Jung Hana-ssi, I find that her voice better suits a duet with Doojoon-ssi. These two still have a chance of making the competition difficult for the judges to decide a winner if they make use of his playfylness and charm on stage with her energy and powerful voice.
#2027 + #2034! ★★★✩✩ Kim Yubin + Yoon Doojoon
This is another pairing I couldn't fathom. I would've paired Yubin-ssi with Kikwang-ssi if I had to personally choose but I'm questioning the judges' decision and the viewers' votes (sorry!) because of her appearance. It is not considered normal for any person to appear on broadcast with tattoos and not cover them, especially on a show like the MGAs so to pair her with power vocal Yoon Doojoon is a stretch. While the dynamic vocally could be wonderful, their chemistry on-stage is in question. What song they could possibly perform and highlight the strengths of both is in question considered such different musical tastes based off the last two rounds.
#2036 + #2037! ★★★★✩ Alaska Park Sunyoung + Park Sunyoung Luna Carter
The partnering up of the two 'Park Sunyoung's in this competition is one of the only matches I would not assume to have been randomized but deliberate. Their musical tastes vary as well but their friendliness on twitter showcases their potential chemistry on stage. I'd call them a force to be reckoned with, as they are two of the lively female personalities on the show too. How far will that take them is up in the air. I'd like to say English songs will be a viable option but from these two? I say to expect anything instead!
That all being said, I'll be making a post later about the possible results of the final round and what I hope will happen once the companies make their offers! What do you think of the selections for the final round?
JANG HAE BYEOL's MGA RECAP ★ SPECIAL EPISODE + FINALISTS! 〖 ★ 〗
It's that time again and Jang Haebyeol is here at your service providing you my own personal insight on the latest MGA news! The results are out and only 20 contestants from round 3 are continuing. So goodbye to contestants #2018, #2019. #2023, #2025, and #2038. I have to say that I'm a little disappointed about #2019 and #2038. I thought they had some potential to show themselves amazingly in the final round but that's not the only critique I have regarding the decisions made by the MNET MGA judges.
The finalists are as follows:
✦ (Click their contestant number for their progress in Season 2 so far!)
#2000 ★★★★✩ Ty Lee Kikwang
#2003 ★★★✩✩ Mark Tuan Yi-En
#2005 ★★★✩✩ Bang Minah
#2007 ★★★★✩ Bang Yongguk
#2008 ★★★★✩ Jung Joonyoung
#2009 ★★★✩✩ Jeffrey Im Jaebum
#2011 ★★★★✩ Kasper Lee Serine
#2012 ★★★★✩ Park Chanyeol
#2013 ★★★✩✩ Lily Choi Jinri
#2015 ★★★★✩ Byun Baekhyun
#2017 ★★★★✩ Kim Myungsoo
#2020 ★★★★✩ Rome Yu Barom
#2021 ★★★★✩ JRoyal Kim Jonghyun
#2024 ★★★★✩ Park Jimin
#2026 ★★★✩✩ Lee Jaehwan
#2027 ★★★✩✩ Kim Yubin
#2032 ★★★✩✩ Jung Hana
#2034 ★★★★✩ Yoon Doojoon
#2036 ★★★★✩ Alaska Park Sunyoung
#2037 ★★★✩✩ Park Sunyoung Luna Carter
As I said last time, I held back on granting anyone a 5 star ranking because your votes make a difference. With that, the most popular contestants (based on votes) have been revealed as well! As such, I will be adding a star to their current rank! I'm glad to tell you guys that all three were already at a 4 star ranking, bringing them to the coveted 5 star ranking! Seeing as the ranking within those three was not released, I will be listing them by contestant number, which is also alphabetical.
✦ #2007 ★★★★★ Bang Yongguk
✦ #2017 ★★★★★ Kim Myungsoo
✦ #2020 ★★★★★ Rome Yu Barom
From this point on, only 15 will receive the chance to sign with one of the big 5 companies. Who do you think it will be? Read on to find out my opinions on each contestant after the surprise special episode of the MGAs!
✦ (Please note that only the above 3 contestants received a change in their ranking because of the voting results! * the contestant page is now updated!)
Are you ready to put on those rose-colored glasses? Here we go!
#2000 Ty Lee Kikwang ★★★★✩
With a physique as desirable as Lee Kikwang-ssi's, it was typical of him to bring viewers to a gym. I enjoyed being shown the studio where his dancing gradually transforms from a draft to a work of art but it's a shame he didn't show us more. I would've liked to see more of the charm he emphasizes onstage. Watching Rome's episode reveals the rest of their roommates and it's impressive that the two contestants live in a house together. One of the firsts on the MGAs.
#2003 Mark Tuan Yi-En ★★★✩✩
Viewers were in for a bonus surprise today when Mark-ssi's roommate was revealed to be none other than Royal trainee Lee Hongbin, one of the prettiest male flowers. Another brief clip that makes you wish the contestant showed more but what was shown was enough to show some charm. The ahjumma who's taken him in as his son is cute and his jokes were funny. I almost want to give him a star for personality but there weren't that funny.
#2005 Bang Minah ★★★✩✩
Her admiration for Nova's CEO is shown from the tour of her room but this viewer can't help remembering how she disregarded Sphere for Nova. This adds injury to insult. Her roommate is model Kim Yura and it sheds a little light on Minah-ssi so I will admit I might be too harsh on her. Trainees live a difficult life but it is wise to be smart about how you show yourself in terms of past transgressions. The connection she has to the other contestants is interesting and it looks like there's another pair of cousins in the competition. Her current occupation puzzles me but that's all I have to say on her.
#2007 Bang Yongguk ★★★★★
More connections come out in this episode when Yongguk-ssi reveals how he became friends with well-known trainee Jung Daehyun-ssi and talks about his roommate, TRC trainee Choi Junhong-ssi who opened in the same Kollaboration concert for TRC's public auditions earlier this year with contestant #2000, Lee Kikwang-ssi. His explanation for a love for rap reminds me of the movie "Brown Sugar" so I wonder if he's a fan but it's easy to tell why he's become one of the public favorites. His daytime job is cute too.
#2008 Jung Joonyoung ★★★★✩
The man who showed us what rock is last time has a blunt personality, shown by the way he answered the camera when he opened his door. His habits are odd but charming but I'm a little turned off by the excessive alcohol and cigarettes in his clips. Keep in mind that MGAs are viewed by all age groups! His dog is adorable and I was really interested in what he showed us of his old band but wow! He owns a cafe? I had to check his age again because I forgot but it is a little sad to hear that his friend and co-owner of the 사과 Cafe no longer does music. He was very honest so I give him credit for showing his true life!
#2009 Jeffrey Im Jaebum ★★★✩✩
Still as cute as before, his lifestyle seems simple but happy and free! It gives off a plain image but it's sweet and endearing. I liked watching him go through the day and offering to feed the staff was precious. His energy at the noraebang and the reactions of the staff was funny too. You should've joined him!
#2011 Kasper Lee Serine ★★★★✩
Cute and charming offstage as she is onstage, I was thrilled to find out her rapping comes from poetry and prose. Her talent flows out and I have to agree with her about being cute and powerful. Another contestant offering to feed the crew, she might become one of my favorites if she isn't already but you guys know I don't like showing favor too much. It'll take a lot for that to happen but she's on her way.
#2012 Park Chanyeol ★★★★✩
The shirt he wore when opening the door is another indicator that he's a fan of the Amazing Spiderman like this girl. His youthfulness is adorable and I want to see his reaction when screening this episode because the cameraman deceived him but it was a treat for the viewers to see Chanyeol-ssi's attempt to act cool. One of the contestants with the most connections mentioned, his friendly disposition requires no explanation for why. It's a shock to find out his roommate is KT trainee Oh Sehun who once had a scandal with former KT trainee, contestant #2036. He's dorky in a way reminiscent of the superhero he admires and that makes this really enjoyable to watch. I'm surprised he wasn't among the top 3 but like I told you, it's anyone's game ~
#2013 Lily Choi Jinri ★★★✩✩
Wow, I had no idea her father was a producer at MNET. Depending on how you take it, this could paint her in a bad light. I'm not implying that her connections brought her this far, especially after a voting round but I will say it does bring up that question. She explains that she has no unfair advantage but the producer filming her segment mentions working closely with her father. Not working directly on the MGAs doesn't mean there is no other bias but she seems like a relatable person and she shows a lot of love for fellow contestant, #2037, Park Luna-ssi.
#2015 Byun Baekhyun ★★★★✩
Finding Byun Baekhyun-ssi jamming out to Single Ladies might be the best intro for any of the contestant's segments for this episode. Classic! I could laugh at that for days and finding out he's in a musical was surprising but a great surprise. I might have to check it out myself. His natural appearance was a plus and it was sweet of him to try and visit fellow contest, Park Chanyeol-ssi. His performance in the cafe was a good song choice and a sweet song. One of the most enjoyable segments, I give him a thumbs up!
#2017 Kim Myungsoo ★★★★★
Sadly there's no footage for this favorite! Read #2020's account for a brief mention of Myungsoo-ssi instead!
#2020 Rome Yu Barom ★★★★★
Similar to his roommate and fellow contestant, Rome-ssi tries to shake off the camera by telling "Jay" he didn't place anything in the sink and this "Jay hyung" is shown later when Rome-ssi attempts the ice bucket challenge for the ALS campaign. Shirtless while asleep like Kikwang-ssi, Rome shows us a different studio later in the day with his crw "Killustrate" after eating out with his roommates and who is assumed to be one of his students. It's shocking to find out Rome-ssi is an English tutor and he's shown us various sides of him today. His consideration for his crew mates and trademark phrases like "20/20 experience" and "B.Yu telling you to Be You," a nod to his youtube username seem to be part of why he's a crowd favorite. His cousin, Kim Myungsoo, for those who didn't know doesn't show up in this episode but is easily found mentioned on Rome's twitter account.
#2021 JRoyal Kim Jonghyun ★★★★✩
The appearance of his little sister, who he dedicated his performance in round 3 to, makes watching this a delight and it's precious to see him take care of her. He obviously has strong affection for her and, like Minah-ssi did of him, he mentions his cousin before another surprise visiter comes in. The PD-nims joke about her being his girlfriend and his fits of laughter are the suiting answer. Fans of JRoyal-ssi need not be jealous ~ Maybe of Sarang because he takes great care of her but he's still single, a question I've only seen brought up with his contestant.
#2024 Park Jimin ★★★★✩
The appearance of the show's youngest contestant this season on her way to school reminds you even more of how young but talented she is. Her adventure board is adorable and she seems very creative. Playful with the camera, she doesn't hide her eating habits or show shame in it which is a great image for society. I'm sure she'll be popular with many Western fans for that.
#2026 Lee Jaehwan ★★★✩✩
When he first makes his appearance, the docile Jaehwan-ssi seems nervous but hostile. The clenched fists threw me off! He looked to his sister and it came off as a show of protection. His sudden desire to narrate his own day is reminiscent of the movie Stranger Than Fiction and his quirkiness can then be compared to Will Ferrell. No one is on par with the American actor but Jaehwan-ssi's style is similar to the character, Harold, in the movie. His adoption is brought up and his university major is rare. Math. Do you have any friends who are math majors? His segment ends on an odd note but hopefully more will come to light on this contestant later on.
#2027 Kim Yubin ★★★✩✩
Regaled the history of this contestant's tattoos, it must be difficult to continue on broadcast when you have to cover each one and it drags up the question of what company might request to sign her. TRC is an obvious possibility, being the contestant's company of choice, but companies such as KT and Sphere might veer away from her image, which cannot bode well with old viewers too. The world she shows us seems to suit her better but I wish her good luck. If she can overcome such an image with talent, we shall see in the final round.
#2032 Jung Hana ★★★✩✩
And there we have it, another fan of Spiderman! With a ringtone like the Pokemon theme, it's no surprise why Jung Hana-ssi requested to be called SupaHana. The fact that she named her alarm clock is cute and it becomes clear she is a big Marvel fan. I think I like her more already and she's a dog walker? Bonus points from me. I think it's lovely when people volunteer or help the elderly. It's great to see the contestants being so accommodating and offering food or snacks to the staff of MNET. They must be appreciative too!
#2034 Yoon Doojoon ★★★★✩
Sadly, there is no footage on this contestant either! I wonder where the conestants have gone, 헐 ~
#2036 Alaska Park Sunyoung ★★★★✩
The former KT trainee is more comedic that I expected! From the full coverage hoodie and her name for the MNET staff member present for her filming, it's hilarious when she falls asleep. Like some of the other contestants, her connections come out too, especially three of the finalists from last season's MGAs. I love her job too. How does one apply? I might drop by after visiting Joonyoung-ssi's cafe too. So many cafes in Seoul on this episode, so little time to see them all ~
#2037 Park Sunyoung Luna Carter ★★★✩✩
I almost had to google Ashton Kutcher and Pranked to understand her reference but I soon remembered. This Sunyoung has a sense of humor as well and it's revealed that she's also adopted, like contestant #2026. Her multicultural background appears to be humble and it's made a bubbly personality in the form of a petite dancer like Luna-ssi. I'm placing my bets that she's a favorite of Western fans too.
I'll be making another post later on my expectations and evaluations of the pairings for the final round! What did you think of the special episode? Do you see any of the contestants in a new light? Feel free to comment your opinions or send in any questions!
장해별 @byeoling I trust that the finalists will give it their all for the final round. Remember, don't think we know everything about them. Their other skills might come out in this round and it truly has become anyone's game with these new pairings!
