Messerschmitt Me 323 Gigant A powered version of the German Me 321 glider, originally powered by four cases and in later versions powered by six. It was armed with five MG 131's for point defence. When fully loaded with it's 12 ton capacity the Gigant required a powered lift off, originally using 3 Bf 110's and Rocket Assisted Takeoff (RATO), but it could return under it's own power. The 3 heavy fighters proved too dangerous for common takeoffs so the He 111Z was used more often. The Gigant could absorb a large amount of enemy fire but was slow and large and was often criticised by the German army. Despite limited numbers of approximately 213 Me 323's they were seen as an invaluable asset to the Germans and saw extensive use.
