July 5, 1942: First Battle of El Alamein
The 4th New Zealand Infantry Brigade, supported by the 1st Armored Division, launched an assault. The 15th Armored Division had only 16 tanks left and seemed doomed, but fortunately, several Ju 87s arrived and destroyed the brigade headquarters with a dive-bombing attack, killing the brigade commander, which led to the cancellation of the attack and allowed the 15th Armored Division to narrowly escape disaster.
