What you want for Christmas
I happened to see this product and it is exactly what I thought should exist to display Gifs. It is called Meural (Meural - Mural? get it?). It costs around $700.
It is basically a computer hanging on your wall that is designed for display. It is standard HD but there is another product called Depict that displays in 4K. I cannot find out if the Depict product supports motion (I suspect not) but the Meural product definitely does.
From PCMag review ‘ The Canvas can show JPG, GIF, PNG, BMP, SVG, MP4, and MOV files. Still images can be up to 20MB each and movie files can be up to 200MB”
(below is my quickie mockup of a Gif in the Meural product. Any Gif would need to be 16x9 or 9x16 or be distorted or have letterboxing. Note power cable)
This raises all kinds of fascinating issues for physical artists, especially with the Depict product. If you read their product literature you will see that it is skewed toward the idea of artists who may be freaked out the their paintings can be displayed easily on a digital canvas that isn’t that expensive. The Meural product seems less concerned because, I think, it is just HD. Their ‘Art’ subscription seems fairly basic and skewed towards Classics, not contemporary work. And - it supports motion.
This was bound to happen as flat panel prices get cheaper and cheaper. How fast it will change the art world that is selling a piece of canvas with paint on it for $90 million dollars is hard to say, but for Gif Artists it means that a collection of their work can be shown on a wall as easily as prints or actual painting.
My fantasy would be to have a gallery with 20-30 of these products on the walls displaying Gif Art. That would be fun. Different sizes would be nice...
