Today we are on a day trip to see the famous Disney castle or rather the one that inspired Disney for his Sleeping Beauty castle and which then became the disney logo with fairytake like turrets

Our first stop was Linderhof approx 1.5 hours from Munich and one of 3 castles built by Ludwig II as retreats to get him away from his Bavarian King responsibilities in Munich. Its a small but very ornate interior castle with really no more thsn about 12 rooms but with more carvings and gold leaf than any sensible person needs. Outside the gardens reminded me a little of Peterhof on a miniture scale.

Onwards through Oberammergau, location of the Passion play and then to the castle at Neuschwanstein which, after a quick bratwurst snack was a 40 minute upwards climb and that was supposedly the fast route! It was a killer and there is no way we could have achieved this earlier in our trip as we are certainly fitter now than we were.

The castle itself, also built in part by Ludwig II who died aged just 40 in mysterious circumstances and before it was finished, is less opulent in gold and more decorative with painted ceilings and tapestries but only a few rooms are finished and decorated. Its really the hill top location thats the stunner here.
